Starting this fall, primary and middle schl students in China will have at least ne weekly curse n labr educatin, accrding t a new curriculum standard released by the Ministry f Educatin (MOE).
Labr educatin ranges frm husehld chres t n-campus labr and cmmunity, vlunteer services, generally 3 types accrding t the new standards: the first refers t everyday chres, including cleaning, rganizing, cking, and using and maintaining hme appliances (家电); next is prductive labr, including agriculture, making traditinal handicrafts(手工艺品), and applying new technlgies such as 3D printing; The third type is service wrk including vlunteer wrk. The new curriculum als calls fr a week f extracurricular and ff-campus activities designed fr labr educatin nce every schl year.
A recent study shwed that primary and middle schl students in China nly spend an average f 12 minutes a day n chres, cmpared t 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in Suth Krea and 30 minutes in France. Many cuntries start students’ labr educatin at a yung age. Finland begins t develp students’ life skill in primary schl. Spinning, wdwrking, cking and ther craftsmanship classes are ffered. In Germany, pupils have tw labr classes per week. Electrnics, ffice technlgy, sewing, husekeeping, and career guidance are all laught there.
Adding labr educatin was ut f cncern that the cuntry’s yungsters d t little husewrk and lk dwn n physical labr jbs. Due t great academic pressure, schls tend t put their academic curricula n the tp, and parents smetimes see husehld chres as distractins. But, accrding t the MOE, labr educatin must be strengthened t help students develp scial values, an interest in-labr and finally an all-arund develpment.

Many studies have shwn the learning-by-teaching effect. Students wh spend time teaching what they’ve learned shw better understanding and ability t remember knwledge than students wh simply spend the same time re-studying. But why des teaching help?
Researchers did a study t test their idea that teaching imprves the teacher’s learning because it frces the teacher t find back what they’ve learned. They asked 124 students t spend ten minutes studying a text with numbers n a tpic which is cmpletely new t them. They tld the students they culd take ntes while studying, but wuld teach the material afterwards withut ntes. After studying the text, the students were divided int fur grups. In ne grup the students spent five minutes giving a lessn n the study material withut ntes. The ther grups either spent the same time cmpleting arithmetic (算术) prblems, teaching with a script (讲稿) r writing dwn all they culd remember frm the text—a frm f recalling practice. A week later, all the students tk a surprise test f their knwledge and understanding f the text.
The imprtant finding is that the teaching-withut-ntes grup and the recalling-practice grup perfrmed better than the grup that cmpleted arithmetic prblems and the grup that taught with a script.
The researchers said the result shws that the benefits f the learning-by-teaching methd are caused by recalling practice; that is, the learning-by-teaching methd wrks nly when the teaching includes recalling the taught materials.
The new findings have a practical suggestin fr hw the learning-by-teaching methd is used in educatin. In rder t make sure that students learn and remember an educatinal material, they shuld internalize (内化) the material befre presenting it t thers, rather than depend n ntes during the presentatin prcess.

Fr the enthusiasts(热衷者) f these changes, culture is nt abut ppular artists r bks,but centers n platfrms like Ggle and Wikipedia, where every variety f culture brings abut the exchange f knwledge and ideas, and makes cnnectins acrss bundaries(边界).It is perhaps debatable whether tw peple wh have participated in such websites, but in ttally different crners f them, have had a cultural experience in cmmn. In fact, these platfrms becme very successful with a large crwd f peple, wh build things tgether, share infrmatin, and frward articles back and frth.
There are still mre questins. What des it mean fr the future f cuntries that culture nw ges beynd the limits f the natin? Is there anything t defend and preserve(维护) in the passing cultural wrld, r is that merely t favr pen ver printing press, hrse ver autmbile(汽车)?
Up t nw a grwing quantity f culture has been glbally spreading and develping.Mre individuals than ever have the chances t be makers f culture, even if that means mre t chse frm and fewer standards t be reached in cmmn. What it means is this strange feeling: that f being mre cnnected than ever, with ne-click(点击)access t s much f the cultural harvest arund the wrld, and yet, f being starved fr having similar interests and pinins with thers, cncerned nly with urselves.
