In 1957, English scientist James Lvelck invented the Electrn Capture Detectr, an inexpensive, sensitive device used t help measure the spread f pisnus man-made cmpunds (化合物) in the envirnment. The device prvided the scientific fundatins f Rachel Carsn’s 1962 bk, Silent Spring, a push fr the envirnmental mvement. It als helped prvide the basis fr regulatins in the United States and in ther natins that banned harmful chemicals like DDT and PCBs.
Later, his discvery that chlrflurcarbns(CFCs)—cmpunds that are used in refrigeratrs and air cnditiners—were present in measurable cncentratins in the atmsphere led t the discvery f a hle in the zne layer (臭氧层). He als explained that they psed n pssible danger t the planet. A year after his paper in Nature, Mari Mlina f the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy and F. Sherwd Rwland f the University f Califrnia at Irvine published a paper in the same jurnal detailing hw sensitive the Earth’s zne layer is t CFCs. In 1995 they were awarded the Nbel Prize fr their wrk in reminding the wrld f the thinning f the zne layer. Lvelck later called his cnclusin a mistake.
But Dr Lvelck may be mst widely knwn fr his Gaia thery that the Earth acts as a “living rganism” that can “cntrl its temperature and chemistry in a state f cmfrtable stability (稳定性).” As an expert n the chemical cmpsitin f the atmspheres f Earth and Mars, Dr Lvelck wndered why Earth’s atmsphere was s stable. He hypthesized (假定)that smething must cntrl heat, xygen, nitrgen, and ther ingredients. He presented his thery in 1967. That summer, the nvelist William Glding, his friend, suggested the name Gaia, after the Greek gddess f the Earth.
The hypthesis may never have mved int the scientific mainstream withut the cntributin f Lynn Margulis, an American micrbilgist. In the early 1970s and in the decades that fllwed, she wrked with Dr Lvelck n specific studies t supprt this cncept. Since then. Dr Lvelck’s thery f a self-cntrlling Earth has been cnsidered imprtant t understanding the causes and cnsequences f glbal warming.

A It was impssible t find CFCs in thin air.
B. CFCs did little harm t the Earth.
C. It was impssible t measure CFCs in the air.
D. CFCs had little effect n cling refrigeratrs.
30. What inspired James Lvelck t prduce his Gaia thery?
A. Earth’s atmsphere remains stable.
B. Glding mentined a Greek gddess.
C Bth Earth and Mars have atmspheres.
D. Living things can exist in the atmsphere.
31. What d we knw abut Lynn Margulis?

And then there are all thse bacteria. Mst peple think f them as dangerus. In sils, they nt nly serve as prey t beneficial prtza, but als perfrm an envirnmental service. They help recycle dead plant parts and animal tissues int nutrients. They even turn sme pllutants in sil and water int mre f the nutrients that can sustain the diverse species that make up lively ecsystems beneath ur feet.
