Math class usually requires a pencil and a calculatr. At Lveland High Schl, students als need a hammer and a hard hat. Every year, abut 150 students sign up fr “Gemetry in Cnstructin.” Students, usually senirs, learn math cncepts in the classrm, and then use that knwledge t build a small hme.
“We basically started this because we knew what was currently ging n was nt wrking fr all kids," said teacher Sctt Burke, ne f the funders f the prgram. "We really felt like we needed t create a mdel that was a little bit different, smething that nt nly helped kids in standardized testing, but als gave them emplyable skills as well."
It was a decade ag when Burke started teaching the prgram. The students’ first prject was a small, ne-bedrm cabin fr a private buyer. Over time, Lveland High Schl started a partnership with Habitat fr Humanity and built several hmes fr lw-incme families. Fr the first time this year, students built tiny hmes that will help huse lcals wh dn't have a prper place t live in.
Lveland High Schl als ffers curses t lder students wh have cmpleted the gemetry prgram. Senir Haley Hansen is nw helping supervise (监管)the current cnstructin site and learning management skills. Hansen wh said she first chse t study n the prgram t hpefully learn math in an easier way, grew t lve it mre than she imagined. "A big reasn I stuck with this prgram is really because f the cmmunity aspect. I actually get t be a part f the cmmunity and feel like, as a high schler, I am making an impact. Being able t help a family in need is smething life-changing fr me," said Hansen.
