The amunt f plastic pllutin in the ceans is rapidly increasing. This is prblematic, as at least 700 species f sea animals — including sharks, whales seabirds and turtles — can be trapped in the stuff r mistake it fr a tasty snack. While we knw that sme species seem t eat plastic because it lks like jellyfish r sme ther fd surce, less research has been carried ut int what sea plastic smells like t sea animals.
But nw, a study frm the University f Nrth Carlina at Chapel Hill has fund that the cating f algae and micrbes (藻类、微生物) that naturally builds up n cean plastics causes the rubbish t give ff the smell f fd.
The researchers tk 15 healthy turtles, each arund five mnths ld and placed them in a labratry aquarium (水族箱). They then piped in clean water, clean plastic, turtle fd, and plastic that had been dwn in the sea envirnment fr five weeks. The turtles shwed n reactin t the smell f clean water r clean plastic. But when they were expsed t the smells f cean plastic r turtle fd, they exhibited hunting behaviur — like sticking their nses ut f the water and shwing increased activity.
“This finding is imprtant because it’s the first demnstratin that the smell f cean plastics causes animals t eat them,” said Dr Kenneth J Lhmann, wh tk part in the study.
“It’s cmmn t find the sea turtles with their digestive systems fully r partially blcked because they’ve eaten plastic materials There als are increasing reprts f sea turtles that have been ill and stranded n the beach due t their swallw f plastic.”
“Once these plastics are in the cean we dn’t have a gd way t remve them r prevent them frm smelling like fd” said Lhmann. “The best thing we can d is t keep plastic frm getting int the cean at all.”
4. What des the new research mainly fcus n?
A. What has caused the sea plastic pllutin.
B. What sea plastic smells like t sea animals.
C. Hw dangerus the sea envirnment is.
D. Hw dangerus the sea plastic pllutin is.

Wildlife ppulatins arund the wrld are facing dramatic declines, accrding t new figures that have led envirnmental campaigners t call fr urgent actin t rescue the natural wrld. The 2022 Living Planet Index (LPI), prduced by the Zlgical Sciety f Lndn (ZSL), reveals that studied ppulatins f mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline f 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previus predictins. The LPI tracked glbal bidiversity between 1970 and 2018, based n the mnitring f 31,821 ppulatins f 5230 vertebrate (脊椎动物) species. Mark Wright f WWF says the degree f decline is destructive and cntinues t wrsen. “We are nt seeing any really psitive signs that we are beginning t bend the curve f nature,” he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been amng the hardest-hit ppulatins, with mnitred ppulatins shwing an average decline f 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazn pink river dlphin, fr example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its ppulatin between 1994 and 2016. Meanwhile, sme f the mst bidiverse regins f the wrld are seeing the steepest falls in wildlife, with the Caribbean and central and suth America seeing average wildlife ppulatin declined by 94 per cent since 1970. Habitat lss and reductin is the largest driver f wildlife lss in all regins arund the wrld, fllwed by species verexplitatin by hunting, fishing r paching (偷猎).
In December, gvernments frm arund the wrld will gather in Mntreal, Canada, fr the COP15 Bidiversity Framewrk, a much-delayed summit that aims t agree n a set f new targets intended t prevent the lss f animals, plants and habitats glbally by 2030. “This is a nce-in-a-decade pprtunity that’s cming up,” says Rbin Freeman f ZSL. He says it is vital that gvernments use the summit t agree n “meaningful, well measurable targets and gals”. “We need gvernments t take actin t ensure that thse gals deal with the cmplicated cmbined threats f climate change and bidiversity, in rder fr us t see a meaningful actin,” says Freeman. But sme researchers are critical f the LPI’s use f a headline figure f decline, warning it is easy t be misunderstd.
The findings dn’t mean all species r ppulatins wrldwide are in decline. In fact, apprximately half the ppulatins shw a stable r increasing trend, and half shw a declining trend. “I think a mre apprpriate and useful way t lk at it is t fcus n specific species r ppulatins,” says Hannah Ritchie at Our Wrld in Data. But Wright says the LPI is a useful tl that reflects the findings f ther bidiversity indicatrs. “All f thse shw they all scream there is smething ging really very badly wrng,” says Wright.

In the shallw waters near the cean shre, kelp (海藻) grws thickly absrbing CO2 frm the atmsphere. It grws at a rate f nearly 60 cm daily and if mved t a mre nutrient rich depth f 80 m, it even grws faster. It’s this rapid grwth that allws kelp t lck large amunts f carbn away — similar t a tree. Kelp and ther species f seaweed culd remve 61-268 millin tnnes f carbn frm the atmsphere every year.
Kelp can als be turned int bifuel. “This bifuel frm kelp can use all the existing refining (精炼) systems f the petrchemical industry,” says Brian Wilcx, the chief engineer at Califrnia-based cmpany Marine BiEnergy. “It in many cases lks like crude il (原油) and it ges thrugh the same prcesses.”
Researchers are develping what they hpe culd be a slutin that wuld allw large kelp farming t be used fr bifuel. Diane Kim, an eclgist at the University f Suthern Califrnia, and her teammates cllected tw sets f kelp frm their underwater habitat ff the cast f Santa Catalina Island, Califrnia. Frty f the kelp chains were attached t a lng line at a depth f 10 m near the kelp’s riginal habitat. Anther 40 were fixed t a ple that culd mve t varying depths like a lift. Fr 100 days, the secnd set was put at a depth f 80 m during the night. During the daytime, researchers lifted it clse t the cean surface t absrb sunlight.
After the experiment, the depth-cycled kelp prduced almst fur times as much bimass as the set kept at the shallwer depth. In additin, the depth-cycled kelp grew far faster — at 5% per day against 3.5% fr the ther set. Kim and her teammates believe this depth-cycling represents a prmising ptin fr bifuel generatin as it allws kelp t take advantage f bth the sunlight clser t the surface and the higher nutrients further dwn in the water clumn. Using methds like this culd allw kelp t be farmed fr bifuel.
12. In what way is kelp beneficial t the envirnment?
A. It lets essential nutrients flw int sea water.
B. It can take in a variety f pllutants in the cean.
C. It is greatly helpful in reducing greenhuse gases.
D. It allws ther species f seaweed t grw faster.
13. What des Wilcx say abut kelp-based bifuel?
A. It will be unaffrdable fr its many users.
B. It is likely t be less efficient than crude il.
C. It may release mre carbn int the atmsphere.
D. It invlves little investment in prductin equipment.
14. Hw did the first set f kelp differ frm the secnd set?
A. It grew at a fixed depth underwater.B. It cnstantly mved arund the seaflr.
C. It absrbed mre sunlight and nutrients.D. It included much mre kelp chains.
15. What cnclusin can be drawn frm the last paragraph?
A. Kelp grws much faster in shallw waters.
B. Depth-cycling can make kelp farming wrkable.
C. Kelp grwn in darkness will prduce better bifuel.
D. Farmed kelp must be kept away frm its natural habitat.
