The amunt f plastic pllutin in the ceans is rapidly increasing. This is prblematic, as at least 700 species f sea animals — including sharks, whales seabirds and turtles — can be trapped in the stuff r mistake it fr a tasty snack. While we knw that sme species seem t eat plastic because it lks like jellyfish r sme ther fd surce, less research has been carried ut int what sea plastic smells like t sea animals.
But nw, a study frm the University f Nrth Carlina at Chapel Hill has fund that the cating f algae and micrbes (藻类、微生物) that naturally builds up n cean plastics causes the rubbish t give ff the smell f fd.
The researchers tk 15 healthy turtles, each arund five mnths ld and placed them in a labratry aquarium (水族箱). They then piped in clean water, clean plastic, turtle fd, and plastic that had been dwn in the sea envirnment fr five weeks. The turtles shwed n reactin t the smell f clean water r clean plastic. But when they were expsed t the smells f cean plastic r turtle fd, they exhibited hunting behaviur — like sticking their nses ut f the water and shwing increased activity.
“This finding is imprtant because it’s the first demnstratin that the smell f cean plastics causes animals t eat them,” said Dr Kenneth J Lhmann, wh tk part in the study.
“It’s cmmn t find the sea turtles with their digestive systems fully r partially blcked because they’ve eaten plastic materials There als are increasing reprts f sea turtles that have been ill and stranded n the beach due t their swallw f plastic.”

Wildlife ppulatins arund the wrld are facing dramatic declines, accrding t new figures that have led envirnmental campaigners t call fr urgent actin t rescue the natural wrld. The 2022 Living Planet Index (LPI), prduced by the Zlgical Sciety f Lndn (ZSL), reveals that studied ppulatins f mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline f 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previus predictins. The LPI tracked glbal bidiversity between 1970 and 2018, based n the mnitring f 31,821 ppulatins f 5230 vertebrate (脊椎动物) species. Mark Wright f WWF says the degree f decline is destructive and cntinues t wrsen. “We are nt seeing any really psitive signs that we are beginning t bend the curve f nature,” he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been amng the hardest-hit ppulatins, with mnitred ppulatins shwing an average decline f 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazn pink river dlphin, fr example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its ppulatin between 1994 and 2016. Meanwhile, sme f the mst bidiverse regins f the wrld are seeing the steepest falls in wildlife, with the Caribbean and central and suth America seeing average wildlife ppulatin declined by 94 per cent since 1970. He says it is vital that gvernments use the summit t agree n “meaningful, well measurable targets and gals”. “We need gvernments t take actin t ensure that thse gals deal with the cmplicated cmbined threats f climate change and bidiversity, in rder fr us t see a meaningful actin,” says Freeman. But sme researchers are critical f the LPI’s use f a headline figure f decline, warning it is easy t be misunderstd.
The findings dn’t mean all species r ppulatins wrldwide are in decline. Diane Kim, an eclgist at the University f Suthern Califrnia, and her teammates cllected tw sets f kelp frm their underwater habitat ff the cast f Santa Catalina Island, Califrnia.
