Infrmatin and structure, 40 percent
Des the pdcast tell a gd stry r teach us smething new and imprtant? Is it structured in a way that keeps listeners engaged? Can we easily fllw the stry yu’re telling r the infrmatin yu’re explaining? Have yu spent time cutting ut unnecessary infrmatin t make sure the main ideas cme thrugh clearly?

Once a circle missed a wedge. The circle wanted t be whle, s it went arund lking fr its missing piece. But because it was incmplete and therefre culd rll nly very slwly, it admired the flwers alng the way. It chatted with wrms. It enjyed the sunshine. It fund lts f different pieces, but nne f them fit. S it left them all by the side f the rad and kept n searching. Then ne day the circle fund a piece that fit perfectly. It was s happy. Nw it culd be whle, with nthing missing. It incrprated the missing piece int itself and began t rll. Nw that it was a perfect circle, it culd rll very fast, t fast t ntice the flwers r talk t the wrms. When it realized hw different the wrld seemed when it rlled s quickly, it stpped, left its fund piece by the side f the rad and rlled slwly away.
The lessn f the stry, I suggested, was that in sme strange sense we are mre whle when we are missing smething. The man wh has everything is in sme ways a pr man. He will never knw what it feels like t yearn, t hpe, t nurish his sul with the dream f smething better. He will never knw the experience f having smene wh lves him and gives him smething he has always wanted r never had.
There is a whleness abut the persn wh has cme t terms with his limitatins, wh has been brave enugh t let g f his unrealistic dreams and nt feel like a failure fr ding s. There is a whleness abut the man r wman wh has learned that he r she is strng enugh t g thrugh a tragedy and survive, wh can lse smene and still feel like a cmplete persn.
Life is nt a trap set fr us by Gd s that he can cndemn us fr failing. Life is nt a spelling bee, where n matter hw many wrds yu’ve gtten right, yu’re disqualified if yu make ne mistake. Life is mre like a baseball seasn, where even the best team lses ne-third f its games and even the wrst team has its days f brilliance. Our gal is t win mre games than we lse.
When we accept that imperfectin is part f being human, and when we can cntinue rlling thrugh life and appreciate it, we will have achieved a whleness that thers can nly aspire t. That, I believe, is what Gd asks f us nt “Be perfect”, nt “Dn’t even make a mistake”, but “Be whle.”
29. Which may be an example f being whle?
A. A persn has everything.
B. A persn accepts his r her limitatins.
C. A persn lves smene and is lved.
D. A persn feels blue fr drpping unrealistic gals.

A. Easy cme, easy g.
B Failure is the mther f success.
C. Energy and persistence cnquer all things.
D. Sme battles yu win and sme battles yu lse.
32. What will be the mst suitable title fr the passage?
A. Life Is t Be WhleB. Dream a Dream
C. Perfect ImpssibleD. Miserable Truth

The Piraha are a primitive Amaznian tribe (部落) f hunter-gatherers wh live deep in the Brazilian rainfrest. The tribe has survived, their culture well-preserved, fr centuries, althugh there are nw nly arund 200 left. The Piraha, wh cmmunicate mainly thrugh sunds and whistles, have fascinated scientists fr years, mainly because they have almst n wrds fr numbers. They use nly three wrds t cunt ne, tw, and many.
We knw abut the Piraha thanks t Prfessr Dan Everelt, wh spent seven years with the tribe in the 70s and 80s. Everelt discvered a wrld withut numbers, withut time, withut wrds fr clrs, withut clauses and withut a past tense. Their language, he fund, was nt just simple grammatically; it was limited in its range f sunds and differed between the sexes. Fr the men, it has just 11 speech sunds; fr the wmen, it has nly 10, the smallest number f speech sunds in the wrld. The language sunds mre like humming than speech. The Piraha can als whistle their language, which is hw men cmmunicate when hunting.
Their culture is similarly cnstrained. The Piraha can’t write, have little cllective memry, and n cncept f decrative art. In 1980 Everelt tried t teach them t cunt, he explained basic cunting skills t an enthusiastic grup fnd f learning them t trade with ther tribes. After eight mnths, nt ne culd cunt t ten; even ne plus ne was beynd them. The experiment seemed t cnfirm Everelt’s thery: the tribe just culdn’t understand the cncept f number.
The Piraha’s inability t cunt is imprtant because it seems t disprve Nam Chmsky’s influential Thery f Universal Grammar, which hlds that the human mind has a natural ability fr language, and that all languages share a basic rule structure, which enables children t understand abstract (抽象的) cncepts such as number. One f Chmsky’s wrkmates has recently gne n an expeditin (远征) t study the tribe. We d nt yet knw if the Piraha have persuaded him t change his thery.
33. What’s the Piraha’s majr attractin t researchers?
A. A well-preserved lifestyle.
B. A small existing ppulatin.
C. A unique cmmunicative way.
D. An extremely simple cunting system.
34. What can we learn abut the Piraha accrding t Everelt’ s findings?
A. They use few speech sunds.
B. Wmen speak less than men.
C. Their grammar is cmplicated.
D They cmmunicate nly by whistling.
35. What des the underlined wrd “cnstrained” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. StrangeB. AttractiveC. LimitedD. Respectable
36. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Findings abut the Piraha help us knw mre abut human mind.
B. The Piraha’s inability t cunt challenges an existing thery f grammar.
C. A researcher is making an explratin t study the Piraha’s cunting ability.
D. Languages have a similar structure s we can understand abstract cncepts.
D
The majrity f peple n this planet live thrugh eg(自我意识). They feel that they are themselves special, apart frm the crwd in sme way. Als, they aren't willing t acknwledge ther peple's special-ness, and feel that they are threatened by the peple wh are different frm them.
Besides, there are many different 'exclusive clubs' which peple jin under certain cnditins, like Clur f skin clubs, Sprts clubs, and s n. What many peple fail t acknwledge, hwever, is that there is in fact nly ne club The Human Being club.
Our diversity is what makes life interesting. I lve watching peple wh dance r create music beautifully, draw ut emtins thrugh their acting skills, r are accmplished athletes. I als understand myself well enugh t knw that I dn't have enugh passin fr any f these things t make the sacrifices necessary t cme clse t their level f excellence.
I believe that it is human nature t cmmunicate and cperate with peple wh are like us, but what a lt f peple see as 'like us' is narrwed dwn t very superficial(表面) characteristics. I remember my Jamaican friend's sister being mst put ut. She had been the nly black wman in her cmpany and then anther black wman was emplyed. They were autmatically put t wrk tgether because they were bth black and bviusly had a lt in cmmn - s thught the emplyer! The truth was that they had nthing in cmmn, didn't cme frm the same cuntry and actively disliked each ther. It's always a mistake t assume anything n a purely superficial basis.
I have many friends wh are members f a variety f the abve mentined clubs and each ne f them has taught me s much abut different cultures and life styles, and has enriched my life in the prcess. I encurage anyne t strike up a cnversatin with smene wh desn't lk like them - yu might be surprised at exactly hw much yu have in cmmn.
37. Accrding t the first tw paragraphs peple tend t _________.
A. feel they are specialB. feel they are lack f eg
C. admit thers are specialD. admit nly ne club exist
38. Hw is the Paragraph 3 mainly develped?
A. By analyzing causes.B. By setting an example.
C. By giving a descriptin.D. By making cmparisns.
39. The authr mentined his Jamaican friend’s sister t shw ___________.
A. black wmen have a lt in cmmn indeed
B. it is human nature t cperate with peple
C. peple understand “like us” in a narrw way
D. peple ften make mistakes in judging thers
40. What des the authr advise peple t d in the last paragraph?
A. T enrich their wn life.B. T jin an exclusive club.
