Bld-Dping Champin
Bld dping (违规输血) t imprve perfrmance is frbidden in prfessinal sprts. Athletes can use this technique t fuel their muscles with mre xygen-carrying red bld cells—fr example, by receiving a transfusin. But many animals dpe naturally: sheep, fishes and hrses can bst their bld’s capacity t carry xygen by 16 t 74 percent in physically demanding situatins. Nw a study shws that an Antarctic fish called the bald ntthen can increase its carrying capacity by mre than 200 percent t pursue an active life in cld waters.
Like mst fishes native t Antarctica, the bald ntthen’s bld cntains anti-freeze prteins that help it withstand extreme cld. But these prteins, alng with red bld cells (RBCs), can make bld sticky and hard t circulate. Sme Antarctic fishes adapt by remving RBCs altgether, absrbing xygen directly frm the water via skin as they passively await prey (猎物). Bald ntthens, hwever, actively swim belw surface ice t chase ther active life when aviding seals and penguins. Fr this behavir, “yu need t supply mre xygen t the muscles,” says Michael Axelssn, a physilgist at the University f Gthenburg in Sweden and c-authr f the new study.
The scientists cmpared RBC levels in samples cllected frm bald ntthens relaxing in glass tanks with thse in samples drawn frm fish they “chased” using a plastic tube. RBC levels were at 9 percent in the resting animals but 27 percent in the exercised nes, shwing a 207 percent increase in the latter’s bld xygen carrying capacity. “N ther fish we’ve seen can mre than duble their RBCs r drp their numbers t such a lw level when resting,” Axelssn says. The fish’s spleen (脾) stres RBCs, and the researcher fund that t release mre int the bldstream, the rgan shrinks t weigh 41 percent less.
The enrmus changes in RBC levels initially surprised Gerald Kyman a bilgist at the Scripps Institutin f Oceangraphy, wh was nt invlved in the study. He ntes, hwever, that these animals have fewer bld cells t begin with, s maintaining circulatin with a tripled RBC cunt is less difficult. If a diving Weddell seal pushed its RBC levels frm 40 t 90 percent, fr instance, its bld wuld be dangerusly hard t pump.
Yet bald ntthens d face trade-ffs fr their ability. The scientists fund bld pressure was 12 percent higher and the heart wrked 30 percent harder in active individuals. Bald ntthens can rest during quiet times, but when they need t use their abilities, Axelssn says, “these fish have t live with mre RBCs because they need mre xygen.”
12. Cmpared with mst fishes native t Antarctica, what is special abut the bald ntthen?
A. Its bld cntains anti-freeze prteins.
B. It can absrb xygen directly frm water via is skin.
C. Its red bld cells can make bld sticky and hard t circulate.
D. It actively swims belw surface ice when chasing ther active life.
13. What des “thse” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
A. RBC levels.B. Scientists.
C. Glass tanks.D. Fishes.
14. It can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs that ________.
A. the RBC levels in seals can increase frm 40 t 90 percent
B. bald ntthens’ bld pressure are 12 percent higher than ther fishes
C. when bald ntthens chase active life, there are mre RBCs in their bdies
D. Gerald Kyman, a marine bilgist prvided sme suggestins n this study
15. What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T explain study methds n fishes.
B. T intrduce sme findings abut a fish.
C. T present a way t imprve athletes’ perfrmance.
D. T raise peple’s awareness t prtect bald ntthens.
