In recent centuries, trade, industrializatin, the develpment f the natin-state and the spread f universal cmpulsry educatin, especially glbalisatin and better cmmunicatins in the past few decades, all have caused many languages t disappear, and dminant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking ver.
At present, the wrld has abut 6,800 languages. The distributin f these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild znes have relatively few languages. Often spken by many peple while ht, wet znes have lts, ften spken by small numbers. Eurpe has nly arund 200 Languages: the Americas abut 1,000, Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, f which Papua New Guinea alne accunts fr well ver 800. Researchers frm The University f Queensland(UQ)have helped design a new app t prtect birds at risk f extinctin acrss the wrld by eliminating language barriers amng scientists. The Bird Language Diversity web app will help prvide a “birds eye view”, ensuring vital infrmatin is shared t imprve wrldwide cnservatin.
UQ’s Dr Pabl Negret said the research team analysed mre than 10,000 bird species, and fund that 1,587 species have 10 languages r mre spken within their distributins. “Scientific infrmatin n species can be spread acrss different languages, but valuable infrmatin can g missing r get lst in translatin,” Dr Negret said. “Withut enugh sharing f infrmatin, this can affect the effectiveness f cnservatin measures.”
Take the cmmn bird Pchard fr example. It is classified as vulnerable species(易危种)and crsses 108 cuntries in Eurpe, Asia and nrth Africa, where a ttal f 75 fficial languages are spken. The survival f the cmmn Pchard, and s many ther species, depends n effective cperatin and plicy agreements amng peple with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrunds.
This app reveals where threatened and migratry birds exist gegraphically, in relatin t the language spken in thse regins. ”We hpe the app will encurage researchers and cnservatin rganisatins t interact with their peers in ther regins, especially if they speak different languages, and be a starting pint t allw everyne t wrk tgether t prtect threatened species,” Dr Negret said.
Dr Tatsuya Aman, a researcher and the c-authr f the paper, said this wrk culd extend further than bird species. “Any species, whether they’re mammals, amphibians(两栖动物), r plants, with a range crssing multiple cuntries will be impacted by language barriers, as well as species that migrate acrss different cuntries, such as marine species and butterflies,” he said. ”The significance f the impact f pr cmmunicatin n such an imprtant issue is evident, and is the reasn why we’re wrking hard t imprve science cmmunicatin acrss languages.”
