Every American family has its wn traditins n Thanksgiving Day, and mine is n different. Once the natinal hliday arrives, my mm rises early t make the meal. She puts a turkey in the ven, chps carrts and bakes pies. I’m srry t say that the men in the family—my dad, my yunger brther and myself—rarely pitch in t help. Our jb is t wash the muntain f dirty dishes after the meal is ver.
Arund 2 pm every Thanksgiving Day, family members seat themselves arund the kitchen table. Plates f turkey, vegetables, salad, rlls and pies cver it. At this pint, we can hardly keep urselves frm drling (流口水) all ver ur fancy clthes, but it’s nt yet time t eat.
First, we must bw ur heads, clse ur eyes and say a prayer f thanks alud t Gd fr giving us everything we have. Under nrmal circumstances, I wuld have n prblem making a list f things I am thankful fr. I grew up in a lving family. My parents, wh aren’t wealthy, tk ut lans t help me pay fr the university.
Hwever, the funny thing is that every time I sit dwn fr Thanksgiving dinner and try t say a prayer f thanks, my mind usually ges blank. I think it has smething t d with my grwling (咕咕叫) stmach and all f that fd sitting right there under my nse.
Eventually, thugh, we all finish ur shrt prayers and dig in. T be sure, the day includes ther highlights—visiting with family and watching ftball. But usually arund 6 pm we are all urselves stuffed like turkeys and thankful t have a nice warm bed t sleep in.

Meeting peple frm anther culture can be difficult. Frm the beginning, peple may send the wrng signal. Or they may pay n attentin t signals frm anther persn wh is trying t develp a relatinship.
Different cultures emphasize the imprtance f relatinship building t a greater r lesser degree. Fr example, business in sme cuntries is nt pssible until there is a relatinship f trust. Even with peple at wrk, it is necessary t spend a lt f time in “small talk”, usually ver a glass f tea, befre they d any jb. In many Eurpean cuntries—like the UK r France—peple find it easier t build up a lasting wrking relatinship at restaurants r cafes rather than at the ffice.
Talk and silence may als be different in sme cultures. I nce made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech t be a success and start a lively discussin; instead there was an uncmfrtable silence. The peple present just stared at me and smiled. After getting t knw their ways better, I realized that they thught I was talking t much. In my wn culture, we express meaning mainly thrugh wrds, but peple there smetimes feel t many wrds are unnecessary.
Even within Nrthern Eurpe, cultural differences can cause serius prblems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; hwever, Germans prefer t get dwn t business mre quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because ne culture starts discussins and makes decisins mre quickly.
Peple frm different parts f the wrld have different values, and smetimes these values are quite against each ther. Hwever, if we can understand them better, a multicultural envirnment will ffer a wnderful chance t us t learn frm each ther.
28.In sme cuntries, eating tgether at restaurants may make it easier fr peple t ______.
A.develp clser relatinsB.share the same culture
C.get t knw each therD.keep each ther cmpany
29.The authr mentins his experience in Thailand t shw that ______.
A.the English prefer t make lng speechesB.t many wrds are f n use
C.peple frm Thailand are quiet and shy by natureD.even talk and silence can be culturally different
30.Accrding t the text, hw can peple frm different cultures understand each ther better?
A.By sharing different ways f life.B.By accepting different habits.
C.By recgnizing different values.D.By speaking each ther’s languages.
31.What wuld be the best title fr the text?
    A.Multicultural Envirnment.B.Crss-Cultural Differences.
    C.Hw t Understand Each Other.D.Hw t Build Up a Relatinship.

Ocean heat waves — defined as perids f extreme temperatures lasting five days r mre — have becme increasingly cmmn in recent decades. In fact, as a new study published in Nature Climate Change finds, Earth’s number f annual cean heat wave days increased by arund 54 percent between 1987 and 2016, with abnrmally high temperatures nt nly ccurring mre frequently, but als lasting fr lnger perids f time.
Underwater heat waves pse a significant threat t marine (海洋的) ecsystems, which are already at risk due t issues including verfishing and widespread plastic pllutin. Sweeping thrugh ceans much like wildfires blaze thrugh frests n land, extreme temperatures exact damage n fundatinal rganisms such as kelp frests, seagrass meadws and cral reefs. Given that these framewrk species prvide shelter and fd t many ther cean creatures, the study’s authrs warn that such destructin will likely have cascading cnsequences fr marine bidiversity.
T assess the effects f cean heat waves, researchers led by eclgist Daniel Smale f Great Britain’s Marine Bilgical Assciatin turned t 116 previusly published academic studies. Reflecting n mre than 1,000 eclgical recrds and eight specific heat waves, the scientists identified regins and species that were the weakest t temperature increases. As Mary Papenfuss writes fr the Huffingtn Pst, areas f the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans tpped the list, with the Caribbean’s cral reefs, Australia’s seagrass and Califrnia’s kelp frests causing particular cncerns.
In terms f species, Pacific Standard’s Kate Wheeling adds, the team ntes that immbile plants and animals were the hardest hit, while trpical fish and mbile invertebrates (无脊椎生物) were able t cpe with the heat by mving t different habitats (栖息地). Interestingly, Jhn Timmer reprts fr Ars Technica, the researchers actually bserved heightened levels f fish diversity during perids f abve-average temperatures, likely due t the animals’ mass migratin (迁徙) tward friendlier waters. The same trend did nt prve true fr sea-dwelling birds, hwever, as shifting habitats limited the avian creatures’ access t prey.
Althugh the researchers’ findings are mst cnsequential fr marine ecsystems. Pierre-Luis and Ppvich explain that damage t cean habitats will als affect humans wh rely n fishing and fish farming.
“Certainly there’s ging t be changes with climate change t marine cmmunities, but it’s nt like the ceans are ging t becme the dead sea. It’s just that, as a cnsequence f what we’re ding t the ceans, there’s ging t be different marine cmmunities in different places than what we’re used t. Obviusly, that is a prblem because we’re srt f set up fr what the climate is nw rather than what it is ging t be in the future.”
32.“Species” in “these framewrk species” in Paragraph 2 refers t ______.
    A.wildfiresB.damagesC.rganismsD.temperatures
33.What can we learn frm this passage?
A.The temperatures f wave heats nearly dubled in 2016.
B.Living creatures can avid heat wave damage by migratin.
C.Overfishing and plastic pllutin are the main causes t cean heat.
D.The weakest regins are cncluded frm previus academic studies.
34.What can we infer frm the last tw paragraphs?
A.Peple shuld stp fishing because f the climate change.
B.Peple wh take fishing fr a living might earn lwer prfits.
C.The researchers findings cannt help us prtect the land ecsystems.
D.Marine cmmunities are ging t be the same as what they used t be.
35.Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.Ocean Heat Waves Are Affecting UsB.Ocean Heat Waves Are Getting Wrse
C.Ocean Heat Waves Are Threatening Marine LifeD.Ocean Heat Waves Are keys t Marine Bidiversity
