I thught we all knew why independent schl students d better than thse in the state sectr(公立学校). They have mre mney, mre funding and better resurces and they dn’t have the mre challenging students we get in the state sectr.
That was befre I became a teacher-researcher in a tw-year prject led by my cllege, aiming t find the best way t supprt high-ability students. With funding frm the Lndn Schls Excellence Fund, we teamed up with sme f the cuntry’s tp private schls, like Etn and St Paul’s, as well as a number f state schls, t find ut hw t bring the knwledge-rich learning that characterizes independent schls int the state sectr.
Befre the prject, I hadn’t had much cntact with peple wh had been educated there. But the first thing I fund when I visited was that teachers are the same. In the independent sectr, they have challenges t—just different nes.
After tw years, ur research prject has prduced a huge set f findings.
One f the mst useful findings was the imprtance f independent learning habits utside the classrm. I realized that althugh I was always telling students that they needed t d fur t five hurs f private study a week, they didn’t have a clear idea f what this culd lk like beynd making ntes. S I set them different activities including reading articles, ding activities and cmpleting examinatin questins.
I started t put much mre emphasis n activities utside the classrm, like researching tpics beynd the syllabus(教学大纲) r discussing things in the news. And I praised anyne wh asked questins in class, s we created a culture where students were prud t ask a questin rather than seeing it as a way f flagging up the fact that they hadn’t understd smething.
My research is beginning t have a real influence. My students nw cme t class and tell me what they want t knw abut. But they n lnger expect me t d the research—they want t find ut fr themselves. At the end f the year I gave students a questinnaire n independent learning. One wrte, “Independent learning wuld limit the help I gt frm ther students. It helps yu t think fr yurself.”
