I am sure we culd. But, unfrtunately, everything abut ur ecnmic systems is set up t make us believe and behave therwise. The default (默认) mindset is that there is nthing wrng with wanting ever newer and mre expensive things as lng as we can affrd them.
Lk arund yu fr a mment. N sciety anywhere befre lived like this. Further, since ur spending must necessarily be smene else’s incme, we tell urselves that we actually make the wrld a better place every time we buy anther pair f shes r trade in a car fr the latest mdel. And that’s the tug (拉) f war that plays itself ut cruelly in ur lives, as ne side f ur age cries ut “less”, and frm the ther side cmes the answering cry “mre”.
Of curse, wanting t live a better life is deeply ingrained in human nature. Otherwise, we wuld never have generated the prgress that has brught us t ur present statin.
But nw we shuld think deeply abut hw and why we cnsume.
After all, even the earliest thinkers in the histry f ecnmic—including Adam Smith—thught, having mre des nt always translate int being happier. Evidence shws that many peple in the develping wrld, despite being hard-up, reprt being just as happy as thse in the materially rich scieties f the West.
S what nw? The answer, perhaps, is t try t be rich in the enjyment f things, nt in the accumulatin (堆积) f them. A pair f gd shes, lightly creased (起皱) but als carefully plished (擦亮) nce a mnth a meal cked at hme instead f a trip t McDnald’s—such as these lie ur act f saving frm the virus f cmpulsive (强迫性的) cnsumptin.

Cgnitive Prcessing Therapy(CPT), a lng-term psychlgical therapy, is a specific type f cgnitive behaviral therapy which reduces pst-traumatic stress disrder (创伤后应激障碍) symptms after natural disasters. Typically, CPT is delivered ver 12 sessins t help patients learn hw t mdify negative attitudes and practices related t their trauma. The gal is that the patient then creates a new, mre psitive view and understanding f the traumatic event, which reduces n-ging negative effects n the patient’s current life. It specifically fcuses n the cre trauma themes f safety, trust, pwer and cntrl, etc.
Delivered bth individually and in structured grup sessins, it allws fr multiple different paths t receive effective treatments. In sme studies, it has shwn t be helpful in cases where medicine alne has nt wrked. Because CPT fcuses n retraining thughts and behavirs t frm practical strategies that can be applied t everyday life. Cmpared t ther talk-therapies, it has been especially successful, because it can be cmpleted in a brief perid f time, allwing fr a lwer patient drput rate. It als enhances brain cnnectivity, which lessens lng-term impacts f trauma. This increased cnnectivity is why cgnitive behaviral therapy is ften argued t be mre effective than medicine.
On the ther hand, there are als multiple disadvantages t CPT. Due t its structured nature, it may nt be suitable fr peple with mre cmplex mental health needs r learning difficulties. Additinally, since it invlves facing up t emtins and fears, patients may experience initial perids f additinal anxiety r discmfrt. Sme therapists als argue that because it nly addresses current prblems and specific issues it des nt address pssible fundamental causes f mental health cnditins, and because it fcuses n the individual’s capacity t change themselves it des nt address wider system prblems that have a significant impact n a patient’s health and well-being.
Hwever, fcusing mainly n pst-natural disasters, regardless f pre-disaster health, CPT has been repeatedly prven t be a rather successful treatment apprach. Althugh there have nt been studies generalizing CPT fr children, it is an effective treatment fr adults. The clear effectiveness f CPT demnstrates the imprtance f patient-specific therapies that are unique t the experiences f individual patients.
8、Accrding t the passage, CPT is intended t help patients _________.
    A. learn hw t mdify varius negative attitudes and practices
    B. cultivate a psitive view and understanding f the traumatic events
    C. minimize n-ging negative effects n their previus and current life
    D. fcus n the cre trauma themes f safety, trust, pwer, cntrl, etc.

Despite grwing cncerns ver tiny bits f plastic filling the wrld’s waterways, the lng-term envirnmental effects f that waste remain unclear. Nw an experiment n freshwater sediment (沉积物) cmmunities expsed t micrplastics fr ver a year helps clarify hw harmful this pllutin can be.
Researchers put trays (托盘) f sediment littered with different amunts f plystyrene (a very light sft plastic) particles (颗粒) — ranging frm 0 t 5 percent plastic — in the bttm f an utdr waterway where bugs, snails and ther little creatures clnized the mud. After 15 mnths, fewer rganisms were fund living in the trays with 5 percent plystyrene than in trays with less plastic, largely because fewer Naididae wrms lived in the mst plluted mud. The trays with 0 t 0.5 percent micrplastic averaged between abut 500 and 800 wrms per tray, while mud with 5 percent plastic averaged fewer than 300, researchers reprted January 31 in Science Advances.
That reductin in Naididae wrms suggests that severe micrplastic pllutin can thrw freshwater ecsystems ut f balance. The 5 percent plastic cncentratin where researchers saw a majr drp in the Naididae wrm ppulatin has mre pllutin than what is typically fund in freshwater sediment, says study cauthr Bart Kelmans, wh studies aquatic eclgy at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands.
“It’s a really imprtant piece f wrk,” says Richard Thmpsn, wh studies envirnmental effects f plastic pllutin at the University f Plymuth in England but was nt invlved in the study. “Mst f ur understanding abut the impacts f small pieces f plastic cmes frm labratry studies ver several weeks. The new experiment gets clser t assessing micrplastic’s lng-term, real-wrld effects,” he says.
Just because the researchers didn’t bserve a significant effect n these freshwater cmmunities at lwer plastic cncentratins “desn’t mean that there are n effects,” says Ana Luísa Patrfci Silva, an ectxiclgist at the University f Aveir in Prtugal nt invlved in the wrk. Simply keeping a cunt f the rganisms living in mud with a certain amunt f pllutin desn’t rule ut the pssibility that micrplastics weaken the creatures’ ability t functin nrmally, she says.
12、What’s the purpse f the experiment?
    A. T clear up the micrplastics in waterways.
    B. T reduce peple’s cncerms ver plastic pllutin.
    C. T see hw wrms live in harmny with each ther.
    D. T identify the harmful effect f plastic in waterways.
13、What can we learn frm paragraph 2?
    A. The thery f the experiment.
    B. The prcess f the experiment.
    C. The participants f the experiment.
    D. The significance f the experiment.
14、The authr tells us that Naididae wrms_______.
    A. are the mst sensitive t plastic
    B. are nt affected by plastic pllutin
    C. are a sign f freshwater ecsystem balance
    D. remain least in water with 1 percent plastic
15、What’s Ana’s attitude twards the findings?
    A. Favrable.B. Skeptical.C. Ambiguus.D. Uncaring.
