There in every pstcard-perfect picture f Greece, a bright red, green and blue bat can be seen in the sea transprting turists t an unknwn beach. Petrs Tzeveleks, a fisherman frm Greece, sits n a bench in frnt f the pier (突堤) in Nrth Evia with a sad expressin. Just a few years ag, his wn kaiki was tied there. Every day, befre dawn, he wuld climb abard the bat t g fishing t make his living.
These handmade wden masterpieces have witnessed the cuntry’s lng seafaring traditin fr centuries, which is an imprtant part f Greek heritage. Sadly, hwever, Petrs Tzeveleks cannt d it anymre, because his belved kaiki was smashed t pieces in frnt f his eyes. Tzeveleks’ belved bat was ne f the abut 13,000 bats which have been destryed since 1994, after a Eurpean Unin directive called fr the destructin f the small wden fishing bats. The sad result? Hundreds f Greece’s beautiful vessels have ended up in scraps in landfills. In additin t the great damage t the many Greeks wh make a living by fishing, the directive als threatens the centuries-lng traditinal craft f bat-building. It led t the extinctin f related bat-building prfessins which fr decades fed and educated Greek families n remte islands and at castal villages.
This is the same cuntry that has Nbel Prize (1979) winning pet Odysseas Elytis, wh summed up all that Greece was in five verses (诗句):
    If yu take Greece apart,
In the end yu will be left with
an live tree, a vineyard and a bat...
which means that with these items
    yu can rebuild Greece...
In 2018, the Save Kaiki Campaign was launched in Greece as an effrt t stp the destructin f these treasures that nce prudly ramed the seas nw facing a bleak future. I can nly remind that what made Greece the highly sught-after destinatin it is tday was its fishing villages n the islands and the kaiki n the sea.

    A. T intrduce the tpic f the text.B. T display the Greeks’ daily life.

If yu nly have a few clse friends, yu may feel like an utcast in sciety. Hwever, studies shw that lners typically have greater intelligence than ppular flks. S, if yu prefer being alne mst f the time, dn’t beat yurself up abut it.
Evlutinary psychlgists Satshi Kanazawa and Nrman Li cnducted a natinal survey invlving 15,000 respndents aged frm 18 t 28. The research revealed that peple wh lived in densely ppulated urban areas reprted lwer life satisfactin in general and that the mre peple scialized with clse friends, the higher their self-reprted happiness was. Of curse, the nly exceptin ccurred when it came t intelligent individuals.
“The effect f ppulatin density n life satisfactin was therefre mre than twice as large fr lw-IQ individuals than fr high-IQ individuals,” they fund. Mre intelligent individuals were actually less satisfied with life if they scialized with their friends mre frequently. In ther wrds, when intelligent peple hang ut mre with their friends, they feel less happy.
What makes highly intelligent peple s different frm the average persn? They prefer t spend their time alne usually because they have a larger gal in mind. They see scializing as a distractin when they culd use their time mre wisely. Als, they dn’t appear t be as sensitive t ppulatin density as thse with lwer IQs. Therefre, they can navigate the challenges f mdern living mre efficiently and perhaps find nvel slutins t mst significant prblems.
Accrding t Kanazawa and Li’s savanna thery f happiness (稀树草原幸福理论), in the past, we wuld have lived in tribes instead f densely ppulated cities, helping t avid lneliness. “Our ancestrs lived as hunter-gatherers in small bands f abut 150 individuals,” they explain. “In such settings, having frequent cntact with friends was necessary fr their survival.” While we n lnger live in small tribes nw, mst f us still require clse friends and family t survive. That may explain the epidemic f lneliness affecting millins f peple wrldwide.
Hwever highly intelligent peple are the exceptin t this thery. They dn’t mind spending mst f their time alne. S, if yu dn’t have many friends, yu may have learned t vercme yur primitive instincts. Perhaps yu represent this small grup f humans wh can thrive in the mdern era.
    8. What d Kanazawa and Li find ut?
    A. Peple tday like living in densely ppulated urban areas.
    B. Peple tday have lwer life satisfactin than befre.
    C. Scializing can enhance ne’s happiness generally.
    D. Happiness mainly lies in the jy f achievement.
    9. What is intelligent peple’s difference frm the average persn?
    A. They are extremely sensitive t the envirnment.
    B. They dislike spending much time scializing.
    C. They can’t handle life challenges effectively.
    D. They enjy the cmpany f ther peple.
    10. What cnclusin can be drawn frm the savanna thery f happiness?
    A. Lneliness pses a great health threat t us.
    B. Peple nw are smarter than ur ancestrs.
    C. Densely ppulated urban areas are harmful t us.
    D. We still need t make cntact with thers t survive.
    11. What is the questin the authr tries t answer in the text?
    A. Why d smart peple keep just a few clse friends?
B Why d mst peple tend t live in urban areas?
    C. Hw d the brains f intelligent peple wrk?
    D. What is the key t happiness?
    D
In 2014, UC Berkeley bilgist Rbert Dudley wrte a bk The Drunken Mnkey: Why We Drink and Abuse Alchl, prpsing that ur attractin t alchl arse millins f years ag, when ur mnkey ancestrs discvered that the smell f alchl led them t ripe and nutritius fruit.
Recently, a new study led by Christina Campbell f Califrnia State University, Nrthridge (CSUN) supprts this idea, which Dudley calls the “drunken mnkey” hypthesis (假说).
In his bk, Dudley laid ut evidence fr his idea, which shwed that sme fruits knwn t be eaten by mnkeys have a naturally high alchl cntent f up t 7%. But he did nt have data shwing that mnkeys r apes preferentially sught ut and ate fermented (发酵的) fruits, r that they digested the alchl in the fruit.
Fr the newly reprted study, the CSUN researchers analyzed the alchl cntent in the fruits eaten and thrwn away by black-handed spider mnkeys at a field site, Barr Clrad Island in Panama. They fund that the fruits rutinely had alchl cncentratins f between 1% and 2%, a by-prduct f natural fermentatin by yeasts.
Mrever, the researchers cllected urine (尿液) frm the free-ranging mnkeys and fund that the urine cntained secndary metablites (代谢产物) f alchl. This result shws that the animals were actually using the alchl fr energy—it wasn’t just passing thrugh their bdies. “They wuld get mre calries frm fermented fruit than they wuld frm unfermented fruit. The higher calries mean mre energy,” Campbell said.
The need fr the mnkeys’ high calric intake may similarly have influenced human ancestrs’ decisins when chsing which fruit t eat, Campbell added. “Human ancestrs may als have preferentially selected alchl-laden fruit fr cnsumptin, given that it has mre calries,” she said.
Tday, the availability f alchl in liquid frm, withut the belly-filling pulp f fermenting fruit, means it’s easy t have t much f it. The idea that humans’ natural lve fr alchl cmes frm ur primate ancestrs culd help sciety deal with the cnsequences f alchl abuse. “Heavy alchl cnsumptin can then be viewed cnceptually as a disease f nutritinal excess,” Campbell said.
    12. What is the “drunken mnkey” hypthesis abut?
    A. Mnkeys can hardly resist the attractin f alchl.
    B. It is difficult fr humans t deal with drunken mnkeys.
    C. Our lve fr alchl has smething t d with mnkeys.
    D. Mnkeys get drunk easily by eating fermented fruits.
    13. What can we learn frm Dudley’s bk written in 2014?
    A. Mnkeys prefer t eat fermented fruits.
    B. The alchl cntent f sme fruits is very high.
C It takes a lng time fr mnkeys t digest alchl.
    D. Alchl in the fruit influences mnkeys’ digestive system.
    14. What did the researchers find in the urine samples?
    A. Alchl has bvius effects n mnkeys.
    B. Mnkeys take in alchl fr mre energy.
    C. Alchl can stay in mnkeys’ bdies fr lng.
    D. Unfermented fruit is much healthier fr mnkeys.
    15. What des the authr want t tell us in the last paragraph?
    A. The significance f the new research.
    B. The ways t fight against alchl abuse.
    C. The prblem f heavy alchl cnsumptin.
    D. The effects f alchl abuse n human health.
