    Fat Bear Week started in 2014. At first, it was just Fat Bear Tuesday. Mike Fitz, a frmer park keeper at Katmai, nticed that live webcams shwing the bears generated a lt f nline cmments, s he let peple vte fr their favrite fat bear n the Internet. The ne­day event attracted 1,700 vtes. In 2015 , it was extended t a week. Last year, nearly 800,000 peple gt invlved, turning it int a glbal campaign.
    The cntest serves tw main purpses. First, sme f America's natinal parks are in remte and undevelped areas, which are difficult r cstly t reach. Fat Bear Week brings Alaska's wilderness t fans' cmputer screens. “ It's nt limited t the frtunate few wh can g t the river anymre,” Fitz said.
    Secnd, Fat Bear Week brings attentin t the bears and the ecsystems they live in. “ The 2,200 bears f Katmai are strng fr feeding n sme f the healthiest salmn (三文鱼) in the wrld,” said Sara Wlman, a frmer park keeper. Salmn in the Pacific Nrthwest are suffering frm verfishing, dam cnstructin and warming rivers due t climate change. Luckily, Brks River, which Katmai's bears like t fish in, has been free frm these threats s far.
    Fat Bear Week has spread like viruses. Fans and creatrs say it's because it shws a cnservatin success stry.     They mved in with a lcal family, the Harrisns, and like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket f snw n their quilt when they wke up in the mrning. Sme mrnings, Rsamnd and Drthy wuld arrive at the schlhuse t find the children weeping frm the cld. In spring, the snw was replaced by mud ver ice.
