Lindsay was a hard wrker like Erica, s the tw girls were happy t be partners. They were nw writing abut rain and were amazed t learn hw much rain their twn gets every year.
The girls were enjying the fun facts they were finding. When all f a sudden, Lindsay saw Erica culdn’t breathe. Erica had been chewing n (咬住) a pen cap and had accidentally swallwed (吞下) it.
Lindsay asked her if she was chking (窒息). When Erica ndded t say yes, Lindsay quickly gt her mm t d the Heimlich maneuver (急救法) t try t help Erica. (The Heimlich maneuver is a ppular way t save sme ne frm chking. This methd is named after the dctr wh invented it, Henry Heimlich.)
Lindsay’s mm didn’t want t hurt Erica, s the first time she tried the Heimlich maneuver, she did nt d it very hard. She tried a secnd time, and nthing happened. After trying it a third time, the pen cap flew ut f Erica’s muth!
Erica was very thankful t Lindsay and her mm. She was really scared when she had swallwed the pen cap and culd nt breathe. Lindsay’s quick thinking saved her friend. This was ne science prject that bth girls wuld never frget!

With the help f Seamen Francis, Jhn and Samuel, I have managed t g abard Endeavur.
He’s small, and his cmpany is ver 80 in number. It’s a wnder I have nt been discvered.
It’s a gd hiding place I’ve gt, in a small bat Endeavur carries. I can lk ver the bat withut being nticed. But it is difficult, lying day and night.
The wind blws the rpes against the deck, and the ship’s bell rings regularly. I thught it culd never be s nisy n a ship. But it is.
I’ve gt chickens as neighburs. They cluck in cages day and night. I’m glad f their cmpany.
Captain Ck gathered the seamen and read the Articles f War alud. Captain is a clean man with cld eyes.

I had a stmachache again. I wish my father wuld cme abard and take me hme. I’m tired, wet and hungry. Father knws by my letter that I’ve run away frm the farm. But I believe he wuld nt cme. Father is s disillusined that he hasn’t talked with me fr several weeks. All my brthers are excellent students. Only I culd nt fcus n my studies. Father has n use fr a sn wh will nt learn well.

I shall be patient. Father thinks me hpeless when it sticks with a plan. He says I run frm everything. Well, I did run frm schl and the farm. But I had a gd excuse. Althugh hiding n the bat isn’t pleasant, I am better ff than I was with the farmers. I shall shw Father that I wn’t give up easily. That I am gd fr smething. That I am mre than a farmer’s by.

Bth f my tw sns were brn in Trnt, but they mved with us t Ottawa when they were quite yung. They went t schl there, grew up there. Later, ne f my sns went t Canada’s east cast near a city called Halifax and the ther mved t the west cast t Vancuver. My wife and I were left in the middle.

I lived, up t the time f the illness that tk away my sight and hearing, in a tiny huse made up f a large square rm and a small ne. My father built such a huse when he married my mther. It was cmpletely cvered with climbing rses, vines and hneysuckles. It was the favurite place f humming-birds and bees.
