She wuld be the first persn t g t a freign cuntry t study and paint insects directly frm nature.
When they arrived in Suriname, Maria and Drthea started wrking. Day after day, they tk their painting materials int the ht and humid rainfrest t cllect and draw insects and plants. Artists had never dne such a thing befre. Still life painters drew frm dead specimens. But Maria had always been interested in painting living animals and plants, and her favurite subjects were insects.
In the rainfrest, she climbed ladders t study and cllect insects. She had trees cut dwn s she culd see what lived at the tp level f the frest mre than a hundred feet verhead. Maria cmbined bth art and science in her wrk. As a skilled bserver, she kept detailed ntes.

In recent years, there has been great prgress in the study f genetics. With this prgress, drs have been pened up t technlgies that never existed befre. While many peple are excited abut these new technlgies, these same technlgies frighten thers. Nwhere is this truer than with genetically mdified(GM)(转基因的)fd.
There are tw ways in which a plant r an animal can be genetically mdified. First, new material can be inserted int its DNA t give the plant r animal qualities which it wuld never have in nature. Secnd, material can be taken frm the DNA f a plant r an animal in rder t remve qualities which are nt desired.
One aim f GM research is t prduce fd which will make us healthier. S far, this technlgy has been used t prduce plants which are better able t defend themselves against pests and disease. Supprters f GM fd argue that GM plants are healthier and have larger harvests. While there has been research in GM animals such as pigs, n GM meat is being sld at present.
Many questins have been raised abut GM fd. N ne really knws whether it is safe fr animals r humans t eat. Scientists admit that mre tests shuld be dne n GM fd. Research has been limited t increasing prductin prfits, rather than making sure that GM fd is safe. GM fd culd therefre be dangerus t eat.
There is als a questin as t whether GM plants are safe fr the envirnment. Since GM crps are planted utside, they are part f the fd chain—insects and ther animals eat them r use their prducts, and these insects and animals will be eaten by ther animals. N ne knws what effects the GM material might have n the fd chain.
Since n ne really knws whether GM fd is safe, many cuntries have hesitated t give permissin fr the prductin f GM fd, as they wuld rather be cautius with this new technlgy.
