Matt Haig, the best-selling authr f the nvel “The Midnight”, recmmends sme bks that ffer wisdm r cmfrt in difficult times.
Letters t a Yung Pet by Rainer Rilke (1929). This is the ultimate cmfrt read. The bk is what the title suggests: letters frm an lder pet t a yunger ne. The great thing abut Rilke’s advice is that it acknwledges the darkness and suffering f existence, yet manages despite that—r maybe even because f that—t inspire.
When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön(1996). I read this bk during the first lckdwn, and it was the perfect read fr uncertain times. Chödrön is a Buddhist, but the advice and philsphy in these relatively few pages speaks universally. It’s a great bk abut embracing life in its ttality, abut seeing hpe and suffering as part f a whle.
The Huse at Ph Crner by A.A. Milne(1928). The Winnie-the-Ph stries really speak t peple ging thrugh tugh times. In many ways, each f the characters reflects a different mental state: Eeyre is depressed, Tigger is hyper-active, Piglet is anxius, and Ph reflects a hpe and ptimism much needed in recvery. I reread this bk when I was ill with a panic disrder, and it cmfrted me.
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamtt (1994). In my pinin, this is the greatest bk abut writing ever written. But like Rilke, Lamtt is ffering far mre than writing advice. She is ffering wisdm n life and hw t embrace its imperfect nature.

One day in elementary schl, a friend asked me “What are yu eating?” as she glanced at my lunchbx. “It smells,” she said, nse crinkled.
I was eating bhindi rti, my favrite Indian snack, which my mm had packed fr me. But feeling embarrassed fr having a “smelly” lunch and wanting t fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbx. That day, I went hungry.
Mst days after that, lunchtime at schl felt like a battle. If I wasn’t trying t hide my lunch r sneak quick bites when n ne was lking, I’d insist n bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the ther kids. Lking back, I wish I’d had the wisdm f Satya and ffered my friend a bite f my lunch, r just tld her it was delicius — especially because nw, as an adult, I see that Indian fd is universally lved by my friends. Sme even try t ck Indian lentils r chickpeas at hme! And when I’m hungry, guess what? I miss my mm’s bhindi rti and her care in making it fr me. Fd is an expressin f culture, traditin, family and lve. And that’s smething t celebrate, nt hide.
