Satter lives in Bnntla (BT) in suthwestern Bangladesh (孟加拉国) . The small seaside village was nce hme t 2,000 peple. Mst f them were farmers, like Satter. Salt in sil has increased by 26 percent ver the past 35 years. In 1973, 833,000 hectares f land were pisned by sea water. Areas f fresh water were als pisned. This grew t 1.02 millin hectares in 2000, and 1.056 millin hectares in 2009, reprts Bangladesh’s SRDI.
At BT village, the wmen walk up t 4 kilmeters t a well t cllect water fr cking and drinking every day. Wells in the area nly have fresh water in the mnths after yearly heavy rains. In the summer, fresh water is difficult t find, said ne f the wmen, Halder.
The villages lie in Bangladesh’s suthwestern Shyamnagar area. The area is hme t 400,000 peple. Officials say the gvernment des nt have the mney t build desalinatin factries. “The area needs maybe 500 desalinatin factries. But we’ve nly gt 50,” said Alamgir head f a lcal rganizatin.
