There’s anther universe nt far frm land. It lacks buildings, trees, cars, cellphnes and the Internet. Seemingly limitless water extends uninterruptedly in all directins. Civilizatin ges away, alng with any sign f humanity. And it is why I’m really int sailing. I grew up arund bats. My father liked sailing and built them.
My lder sister and I were stuffed int a car nearly every summer weekend until my late teens t make the trip frm nrtheast Indiana t the suth shre f Lake Erie in Ohi, where Talisman built by my father waited patiently thrugh the week.
As a kid, I read the adventures f Rbin Lee Graham, a traveller explring the sea alne, in the pages f Natinal Gegraphic and, later, in Graham’s bk, Dve. Hwever, it wasn’t until abut 20 years ag, well int my adulthd, that I tk up sailing in a serius way. I’ve made vyages in fair and strmy weather, n my wn bats and thse f my friends, and ranging frm nearshre day sails t blue-water passages.
Still, I’ve made plenty f mistakes. While living in Asia, a sailing friend and I set ff acrss the Suth China Sea and intended t get t Thailand, nly t be pushed by a late-seasn typhn that frced us t make landfall in Vietnam, glad t be alive.
Years later, my wife and I lived abard ur 37-ft ship, Symbisis, while we saved enugh t take a tw-year leave frm ur jbs t jurney dwn the U. S. Atlantic cast and thrugh the Bahamas and the Caribbean. We visited many places that never see ships r airplanes and that are nearly impssible t reach anyway ther than at the helm f a small bat. But bats are expensive and time- cnsuming
After returning frm the Caribbean a few years ag, we decided t sell Symbisis, reslving instead t sail nly “ther peple’s bats”. It didn’t last, thugh. A few mnths ag, we fund a gd deal n a smaller sailbat-easier t maintain but still capable f sme shrt ffshre jurneys. I think we’ll name her Talisman.
24. What wuld the authr d n summer weekends as a kid?

Marie Curie is remembered tday fr her pineering wrk n radiactivity, which nt nly earned her tw Nbel Prizes but als the recgnitin as the “mther f mdern physics”. But while her research int the radiactive elements plnium and radium may have secured her a lasting scientific legacy, thse same substances have als had a lasting effect n her bdy.
Then, in 1911, after much persnal tragedy (Pierre Curie had died suddenly in 1906), Curie was awarded the Nbel Prize fr Chemistry fr islating pure radium. She wuld g n t devte her research t the study f the chemistry f radiactive substances as well as their applicatins in medicine. In fact, if it were nt fr Curie’s wrk, ur treatments fr cancer wuld likely nt be anywhere near as develped as they are tday. But despite advcating precautins (预防), Curie’s cnsistent and prlnged expsure t these substances came at a cst.
Marie Curie died n July4, l934, frm aplastic anemia (再生障碍性贫血) caused by her wrk with radiatin. Despite its name, aplastic anemia is mre than just anemia; it is a rare bld cnditin that appears when bne marrw cannt make enugh new bld cells fr yur bdy t functin prperly. When Curie died, her bdy was s radiactive that she had t be laid t rest in a lead-lined (铅封的) cffin. Hwever, n ne knew this until 1995 when her cffin was unearthed.
At the time, the French authrities wanted t mve the Curies t the natinal cemetery, the Panthen, in hnr f their cntributins t science and fr being great figures in French histry. The fficials respnsible fr the exhumatin (掘尸) cntacted the French radiatin prtectin agency with cncerns abut remaining radiatin and asked fr assistance t prtect wrkers in the cemetery.
When the exhumers apprached the grave, they detected nrmal levels f radiatin n the air, which then rse as the grave was pened (thugh nt by large amunts). At first, Marie Curie’s cffin appeared t be made f wd, but when pened, they fund it was lined with 2. 5 millimeters (0. 09 inches) f lead. Later examinatin f Curie’s bdy revealed that she had remained remarkably well preserved and nly small levels f alpha and beta cntaminatin were detected. This, accrding t The Jurnal f British Sciety fr the Histry f Radilgy, was likely because Curie had taken steps t limit expsure t radiatin in later life.
28. We can infer frm the text that Marie Curie __________.
A. invested amunts f mney in her research
B. was awarded the Nbel Prize fr radium precautin
C. is credited with the develpment f cancer treatment
D. abandned her research after her husband’s sudden death

C. They had n regard fr the safety f their wrkers.
D. They were previusly infrmed f the lead-lined cffin.
30. Why nly small levels f radiatin was detected frm Curie’s bdy?
A. Her bdy remained remarkably well preserved.
B. Curie was less expsed t radiatin in later life
C. The exhumers lacked adequate assistance technically.
D. The lead-lined cffin prtect her bdy frm radiatin.
31. Which wrds can best describe Marie Curie based n the text?
A. Remarkable but careless. B. Successful but aggressive.
C. Ambitius and cnsiderate. D. Cmmitted and persistent.
D
It is a general belief amng academics that the humanities (人文学科) are in crisis. Accrding t Harvard histrian James Hankins, part f the prblem is the dminance f “critical” reading ver “primary” reading. Primary reading takes a text at face value and simply tries t understand what the authr intended t say. Critical reading assumes an authr’s statements can never be taken at face value. Instead, they must be “seen thrugh” t expse the text’s real meaning, which is determined in line with this r that fashinable thery.
Mr. Hankins says primary reading “must be recvered” fr higher educatin in the humanities t be effective. I wuld g further. Primary reading isn’t imprtant nly fr the humanities, but fr educatin mre generally. The restratin f primary reading culd be a crucial weapn in fighting the “idle talk” that trubles American sciety.
Idle talk was philspher Martin Heidegger’s term fr inauthentic discurse (话语). It invlves adpting and circulating thers’ pinins abut smething withut ever persnally engaging that thing fr yurself. Peple engaged in idle talk speak in line with expectatins fr their particular rle. They hld and express the pinins a persn in their rle is expected t hld.
Idle talk can be harmless. Each year my mther frms strng pinins abut which films shuld win Academy Awards withut seeing any f them, after reading articles by critics she favrs. But idle talk can als be dangerus. Cnsider jurnalism. The nrm nwadays is fr ne reprter t break a stry, fllwed by dzens r hundreds f jurnalists recycling that cntent. They may add a little spin f their wn but rarely lk int the issue fr themselves-even when this wuld require but a few clicks. Sme jurnalists even just search scial media fr the stry f the day and rewrite it in their wn wrds.
It culd be argued that scial media has cntributed t the ppularizatin f idle talk. Authentic discurse requires time, effrt and gd-faith engagement, but scial media tends t encurage the ppsite. Scial media raises this vice, pushing it int user feeds 24/7. We hear abut everything, and we can’t hear abut anything withut als being tld what pinin we shuld have abut it. Opinins befre facts; knw what t think abut smething befre actually lking int it fr yurself. And really, why even bther with that?
Primary reading isn’t nly smething the humanities need. Our entire culture needs its value t be recgnized and restred.
32. What d we knw frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. Critical reading leads t the crisis in the humanities.
B. Critical reading is generally dminated nwadays.
C. Primary reading fails t expse the real meaning.
D. Primary reading isn’t imprtant fr the humanities.
33. What des the underlined wrd “spin” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Interpretatin. B. InterventinC. Interactin. D. Investigatin.
34. What des the authr think f scial media?
A. It tends t encurage high engagement. B. It prmtes the spread f idle talk
C. It ffers peple facts instead f pinins. D. It advcates independent thinking ability.
35. What’s the authr’s advice fr readers?
A. T fcus mre n facts. B. T get ff scial media.
C. T gain an insight int idle talk. D. T read riginal texts exclusively.

I selected sme clrful lights carefully and als bught a turkey. It began t snw n my way hme, the flakes whirling in the cld wind. It was freezing cld, but I was filled with great rejicing, my heart punding rapidly.
With great excitement and tears, I kncked n the dr. Mum pened the dr, “Surprise! “I yelled, waving the lights and turkey in my hands. “Merry Christmas! “Mum stiffened fr secnds, her face lit up with pleasure. Mum was verwhelmingly tuched with tears streaming dwn her cheeks. She embraced me tightly. In the small but czy huse, we shared the turkey and talked merrily. The smell f turkey bunced thrugh the air, lights sparkling like jewels. It dawned n me that nthing is mre blissful than being accmpanied by ur belved nes.

W: Gd evening, everyne. I recently learnt Arabic in Cair as part f my degree. My interest in the language was due t the passin f ur Arabic lecturer and as the curse prgressed, my interest in the culture als grew with it. I cnsidered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided n Cair due t its energetic cultural scene. Hwever, in the city, we faced sme challenges, including difficulties finding a htel and accmmdatin as we were a grup f unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shck was intense fr sme f us. One member f ur grup returned hme within the first week. Luckily I became accustmed t the life in Cair gradually. The biggest challenge f learning Arabic is the discnnectin between the written and the spken frms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absrbing myself in the culture and getting t knw the lcals and even negtiating at a lcal market. Highlights were being invited t a traditinal Arabic meal at ne f the lcals ’hme and being able t cnfidently cmmunicate. Overall, this experience was utside f my cmfrt zne and allwed me t learn and grw in interesting ways. I encurage thers t cnsider invlving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks fr listening.
