If there was t be a praise t the frg, it wuld have t cntain ne new piece f infrmatin: its ability t predict earthquakes. A scientific study has suggested that they escape an area just befre such disaster strikes.
The evidence, published yesterday in the Jurnal f Zlgy, centers n a ppulatin f breeding(繁殖) frgs in Italy. It seems that, a few years ag, these creatures had suddenly escaped frm their hme five days befre an earthquake struck their breeding grund.
The frgs’ ability t sense the earthquake is nt fully understd, but 96 percent f male frgs escaped and returned a day after the danger had passed. This discvery baffled Dr. Rachel Grant, wh hadn’t set ut t learn abut frgs’ reactins t earthquakes, but t study the effect f the lunar cycle n them. She nw believes that frgs may be able t sense sme signs and use them as an early-warning system fr earthquakes.
Frgs are nt the nly creatures brn with an unusual pwer t predict natural disasters. In 2004, elephants in Thailand made lud nises befre the tsunami hit, while bats in Sri Lanka flew arund in anxiety befre the disaster.
While mst f these animal warnings have been ignred, there are times when they have been nticed. In 1975, scientists in Haicheng, China, nticed unusual behavir in the city’s dgs and cats. They demanded the evacuatin f the city, expecting a majr disaster. Their warning came five-and-a-half hurs befre an earthquake struck, resulting in 2,000 deaths. Withut the evacuatin, anther 150,000 peple culd have been killed.
“There are things we can’t see and sunds we can’t hear. But many animals can. Anxius thinker. Lner. Wallflwer. These are sme negative cmments fr “intrvert” (内向者), shwing a cmmn mind-set in America. Actually they just interact differently; they d well when given time alne t think and prefer clse cnversatins.
American sciety is ruled by the “Extrvert Ideal(外向理想型)”: successful peple take risks and always vice their pinin, whether r nt they knw what they’re ding. The prblem is that peple value this ideal s much that they ften ignre meaningful pinins frm the quieter intrverts. Isn’t there smething prblematic abut having t get ur thughts ut befre we finish thinking abut them?
Over-stressing the Extrver t Ideal can lead t unwise decisins. In ne case, several intrverts, wh tend t be mre careful and think mre, pinted ut warning signals befre the ecnmic dwnturn f 2008.But the decisin makers — ften the bld, risk-taking types —ignred their pinin. Peple say intrverts ften verthink every decisin. Yes, maybe we think befre we speak. But is that really s bad?
Of curse, scial skills are imprtant fr everyne. But the misunderstanding abut hw intrverts wrk creates a cultural bias(偏见). Required class participatin at schl ften leads t students shuting ut whatever thughts cme t their mind, t pressured by their participatin grade t take the time and think f a meaningful respnse. During the Cvid-19quarantine, sme f my classes started using Parlay, a website that allws fr discussins thrugh annymus(匿名的) written cmments. I saw that many f my classes were able t have deeper cnversatins this way, freed frm the pressures f having t speak up n the spt. S encuraging a balanced variety f learning methds can reduce the existing bias.
Sciety seems t think nly the lud and utging nes can make a difference. But Rsa Parks was knwn fr being “sft spken” and “timid.” Gandhi said, “In a gentle way, yu can shake the wrld.” S please, give us intrverts a chance t change the wrld in ur wn quiet way!
32.What is the authr’s attitude twards the “Extrvert Ideal”?
    A.Objective.B.Dubtful.C.Favrable.D.Unclear.
33.What is the main idea f paragraph 3?
A.The benefit f the Extrvert Ideal.B.The intrverts’ pr scial skills.
    C.The harm f ver-valuing extrverts.D.The extrverts’ ways f decisin-making.
34.Accrding t the authr, teachers can imprve the situatin f intrverted students by ______.
    A.requiring n class participatinB.prviding nline learning platfrms
C.allwing different learning stylesD.cnducting free classrm discussins
35.What des the underlined wrd “timid” in the last paragraph mean?
