[2023·太原市高三模拟考试]Sme time ag, in my class I was abut t fail a student fr his answer t a physics questin when the student claimed he deserved a better scre. The examinatin questin sunded “safe”: “Shw hw it is pssible t determine the height f a tall building with the aid f a barmeter (气压表).” The student had answered, “Take the barmeter t the tp f the building, attach a lng rpe t it, lwer the barmeter t the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length f the rpe. The length f the rpe is the height f the building.”
I argued that a high grade shuld prve his cmpetence in physics, but the answer did nt cnfirm this. I suggested that the student have anther try. Immediately, he wrked ut his answer: A secnd best way is t take the barmeter t the tp f the building. Drp the barmeter, timing its fall with a stpwatch. Then, using the frmula t calculate the height f the building.
I was shcked by his answer. His methd gave me nt nly a brken barmeter but a Uturn in my teaching philsphy. I gave him full marks.
On his leaving my ffice, I recalled that he suggested there culd be a better answer. S I asked him what it was. “Oh, yes,” said the student. “There are many ways. Prbably the best,” he said, “is t take the barmeter t the basement and ask the superintendent (大楼的管理人). Yu speak t him as fllws, ‘Mr, Superintendent, here I have a fine barmeter. If yu tell me the height f this building, I will give it t yu.’”
At this pint, I asked the student if he really did nt knw the cnventinal answer t this questin. He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high schl instructrs' trying t teach him hw t think, and hw t use the scalled “scientific methd”. He just wanted t slve the prblem in a practical manner, nt just answer the questin in an expected way. Hearing this, I really had nthing t d but give the by a firm handshake, feeling thankful that I hadn't failed him in the first place and even mre thankful that neither had he.

[2023·泉州市高三质量监测(一)]Peple tday are nt unfamiliar with terms such as “ging ecfriendly” and “sustainable lifestyle” Hwever, there exists a grup f sceptics (怀疑论者) wh believe that ging ecfriendly is merely a fad (一时的风尚). I disagree with this viewpint. Ging ecfriendly is nt merely a fad and it des, in fact, change the beliefs and attitudes f peple.
The lngterm presence f envirnmental rganisatins shws the effrts that peple have made twards ging ecfriendly. Organisatins such as Wrld Wildlife Fund advcate peple t g ecfriendly. The high invlvement f the rganisatins and the participants is thus a strng indicatr that ging ecfriendly is nt merely a fad but a trend that can last decades.
Anther strng indicatr is the emergence f sustainable prducts in many industries, such as rganic prduce and electric vehicles. The cnsumer demand, cupled with eccnscius (环保意识的) businesses, is behind the sharp increase in such prducts. This shws a shift in the beliefs and attitudes f peple twards adpting a sustainable lifestyle. Thus, it seems quite certain that ging ecfriendly is nt merely a fad.
While sme peple wh bradcast their ecfriendly practices are criticised fr just hping t prject an eccnscius image, there are a number f celebrities wh have been practising the zerwaste lifestyle fr years. Fr thse wh d s fr years, and nt mere days r mnths, it is indeed a cmmitment that can nly cme with a true change in beliefs and attitudes twards caring fr the earth.
The call t save the earth lks set t stay. With the develpment f technlgy and the appearance f many platfrms advcating ging green, peple are mre willing t change their beliefs and attitudes when they can learn abut and appreciate the psitive impact f the wrk f different envirnmental rganisatins and individuals. It is hped that these effrts will g a lng way in ensuring that ur planet will remain a suitable place t live in.

A.It may discurage peple frm sustainable lifestyle.
B.It may bst the business f rganic prduce.
C.It will be used t prject an eccnscius image.

An uncnventinal methd fr grwing rice has been fund t increase yields (产量) by 20 t 50 percent. Reprts frm China, India, Sutheast Asia and Africa suggest that average yield increases f 20 t 50 percent are regularly being achieved by farmers adpting the “system f rice intensificatin” (SRI) , which needs netenth as many seeds and aims t stimulate the rt system f plants rather than trying t increase yields in the cnventinal way by using imprved seeds and fertilizers.
The idea f using less t gain mre is seen as an imprtant innvatin fr adapting farming t climate change and a way t increase yields at a time when human ppulatins are grwing fast but traditinal plant breeding and genetically mdified techniques have failed t increase yields mre than a few percentage pints, says Nrman Uphff, prfessr f Internatinal Agriculture at Crnell University.
The new way t grw rice needs nly half as much water, and prves mst ppular in waterstressed cuntries, says Tavseef Mairaj Shah, a Ph. D. researcher. “Rice grwing in Kashmir largely depends n irrigatin systems that draw water frm the river Jhelum. But climate change is leading t drier winters, untimely rains, and warmer summers.”
“SRI is a great technique, nt just frm the watersaving perspective but because it ffers better yields and sil cnditins. Different studies, bth at the experimental level and farmerparticipative level, have shwn that SRI imprves yields with less water,” Shah adds.
Sme academics, the glbal seed industry and the internatinal cmmunity nce rejected reprts f “fantastic” yields, accusing farmers f falsifying (篡改) recrds and researchers f carelessness and “nnscience”. But mre than 600 articles, checked by SRI Internatinal Netwrk and Resurces Center at Crnell University, have shwn benefits.
Uphff says, “Attitudes are changing. The riginal hstility (敌意) has gne.” Hwever, the early ppsitin has resulted in cmparatively little scientific research being cnducted int SRI and a slw understanding by funders.
12.Hw des SRI increase the yields f rice?
A.By swing mre seeds.
B.By using imprved seeds.
C.By imprving its rt system.
D.By adpting special fertilizers.
13.Cmpared with the cnventinal methd fr grwing rice, SRI ________.
A.needs less water
B.increases labr csts
C.requires better sil cnditins
D.depends n genetically mdified techniques
14.What was the glbal seed industry's initial attitude tward reprts n SRI?
A.Curius. B.Skeptical.
C.Apprving. D.Uninterested.
15.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.Hw t increase yields.
B.Peple's attitudes twards SRI.
C.An innvative means f grwing rice.
D.The disadvantages f cnventinal plant breeding.
