We take it fr granted that technlgy brings us clser and imprves ur access t essential prducts and services. But peple wh can't r dn't want t engage with the latest technlgy are being left behind.
Technlgy shuld nt be allwed t drive peple t the side f their wn lives, as many facts suggest is increasingly the case. Fr example, there have been reprts that sme elderly peple n lnger drive t their lcal parks, because they cannt dwnlad the car parking app required. [2023·成都市高三摸底测试]During spring, meltwater frm snw rushes dwn rivers and wind blws hard in the Pacific Nrthwest. These frces turn pwer turbines (涡轮机) and generate much electricity at a time f mild temperatures and lw energy demand. But much f the extra electricity—which culd pwer air cnditiners in summer—is lst, since when mst cnventinal batteries aren't in use, chemical reactins happen. Sme rechargeable batteries lse almst a third f their charge in a mnth.
Researchers at Pacific Nrthwest Natinal Labratry (PNNL), a US Department f Energy (DOE) natinal labratry, are develping a new battery. They demnstrated hw a mlten salt (熔盐) slutin creates a rechargeable battery that stres energy cheaply and efficiently fr extended perids. Such a capability is crucial t shifting the electric netwrk away frm traditinal fuels tward renewable energy. “In ur battery, we tried t stp selfdischarge,” says Li Gusheng, wh leads the prject. Creating a battery that can withstand repeated cycles f heating and cling is tugh. Researchers had t identify materials that culd tlerate temperature changes. The result is a battery made frm relatively inexpensive materials that has seasnal shifting capability.
Heating mlten salt batteries may be a challenge, especially in cld places. Even under mild cnditins, the heating prcess requires energy equal t abut 10 t 15 percent f the battery's ttal electricity, Li says. Later phases f the prject will explre ways t lwer temperature requirements and include a heating system in the battery itself. Such a feature wuld make it easy fr users t use and ptentially make it suitable fr hme r smallscale (小规模的) use.
The DOE is wrking t narrw the gap between initial research demnstratins and the cmmercializatin f energy technlgies, but ultimately it'll be up t industries t develp a cmmercial prduct. “Our jb is really t derisk new technlgy,” Sprenkle, a strategic advisr, says. “Industries will make the decisin as t whether they think that it's been derisked enugh, and whether they'll take that n and run with it.”
