Are yur childhd memries clsely cnnected with cycling? Perhaps yu even remember the pride in getting yur first bike n yur birthday, cmplete with streamers (装饰彩纸条) cming ut f the handlebars, and the excitement f casting dwn the tallest hill in twn? When we were children, biking gave us independence, a sense f self, adventure and excitement, but city biking pses challenges t us when we are adults.
Obviusly, biking brings a number f benefits t the riders, but why aren’t there mre bikers n city rads? Gdrdering, a cmpany that designs bags t suit mdern active lifestyles, cnducted a survey and fund ut that the number ne factr preventing peple frm biking t wrk was the realizatin f rad safety”—sharing the rad with cars can be dangerus.
Omar Bakhshi, a UK-based develper, experienced this first-hand. A car brushed against him while he was cycling, leaving him with an injury that impacted his taste and smell fr life. Bakhshi realized what happened t him wasn’t unusual. Because bikers ften experience clse encunters (相撞) with cars, Bakhshi set ut t make the rads safer fr urban cyclists t use.
His cmpany, Tether, is launching a small sensr that ges n a bike’s handlebars. As the biker rides thrugh the city, the device prjects (投影) a “safety zne” f lights nt the pavement. The hpe is that these lights will frce car drivers t sit up and pay attentin t the rules f sharing the rad. If cars get t clse t the biker’s persnal space, the lights will start shining.
What makes Bakhsh’s device different frm similar devices n the market is its smart features. Tether’s device cllects data frm clse encunters with cars and then the data is rganized int a central database. The data can be accessed by bikers t determine which streets are safer fr cyclists and chse a rute t avid areas that have a large number f clse encunters with cars.

Fr centuries, peple in Baltic natins have used ancient amber (琥珀) fr medical purpses. Even tday, babies are given amber necklaces t help relieve teething pain, and peple put the amber pwder in sme medicines fr its special effects.
Nw, scientists have fund substances (物质) that help explain amber’s medical effects and that culd lead t new medicines t fight antibitic-resistant (耐抗生素的) diseases. Each year in the US, at least 2.8 millin peple get antibitic-resistant diseases, leading t arund 35,000deaths, accrding t the Centers fr Disease Cntrl and Preventin. “We knew frm previus research that there were substances in Baltic amber that might lead t new antibitics, but they had nt been systematically explred,” says Elizabeth Ambrse, the main investigatr f the prject. “We have nw identified several substances in Baltic amber that shw activity against antibitic-resistant bacteria.”
Ambrse’s interest riginally came frm her Baltic heritage. While visiting her family in Lithuania, she cllected sme amber and heard stries abut its medical uses. Ambrse and a graduate student Cnnr McDermtt, wh is at the University f Minnesta, analyzed cmmercially available Baltic amber samples, in additin t sme that Ambrse had cllected.
“One majr challenge was getting a fine pwder frm the amber,” McDermtt explains. Thrugh trial and errr, he finally gt it. Then sme substances were identified. Because these .substances are difficult t deal with, the researchers bught pure samples and sent them t a cmpany that tested their activity against nine bacterial species, sme f which are knwn t be antibitic-resistant. “The mst imprtant finding is that these substances are active against gram-psitive bacteria,” McDermtt says.
“Mving frward with these results makes us elated,” Ambrse says. “Sme newly discvered substances are prbably the surce f new medicines, especially fr treating diseases caused by gram-psitive bacteria, which are increasingly becming resistant t knwn antibitics.” As scientists study the active prperties f ther traditinal medicines frm arund the wrld, it’ll be great t see ther findings.
8.What’s the finding f the new study?
A. Medical effects f amber lack scientific bases.
B. Amber can be used fr curing sme mental illnesses.
C. Antibitic-resistant diseases have caused many deaths.
D. Substances in amber can help fight drug-resistant bacteria.

A. A cultural exchange prgram at cllege.
B. The success f frmer amber researchers.
C. The traditinal belief in its medical value.
D. Her determinatin t cntribute t medicine.

11.What des the underlined wrd “elated” in Paragraph 5 prbably mean?
A. Cnfused.B. Anxius.C. Excited.D. Disappinted.
Tsunamis are ne f the mst terrifying natural phenmena that the wrld suffers. The series f waves generated by the displacement (位移) f a large vlume f water can be caused by several events, including earthquakes, underwater explsins and landslides. Once triggered (引发), a tsunami can hit the cast within minutes and its destructive pwer can be enrmus.
At present, early warning systems rely n measuring the mvement f dart buys (浮标), which recrd changes in the sea level, r assessing the bttm water pressure f the develping tsunami. But they require the tsunami t physically reach the measurement lcatin. The buys culd be fixed in the deep cean, but this requires an unrealistically big number f buys. Or peple can fix the buys alng the shreline, but due t the high speed f the tsunami, this methd may leave n warning time fr peple n the land.
Instead, there is a new system — using sund waves t predict tsunamis. Sund waves caused by an earthquake can travel much faster than the tsunami that has been triggered. Using standard underwater micrphnes, we can recrd these sund waves lng befre the tsunami arrives regardless f the directin in which the tsunami will travel. The sund signals cme frm changes in pressure, s what we actually analyze is a series f data n hw the pressure is changing ver time. Thugh buys als shw changes in pressure, the tsunami frnt must actually reach the buys t infrm us that there is an increase in the water surface. By using underwater micrphnes, hwever, we nly need t catch the sund signals.
Thugh the idea f using sund waves t predict tsunamis has been put frward previusly, the key t ur idea is a new mathematical methd that can be used t analyze these recrded sund signals in near real-time. Once this is wrked ut, we can nt nly warn peple f a tsunami but als mre accurately estimate its size lng befre it reaches the shreline.
12.Frm Paragraph 1, we knw ______.
A. what can trigger ff tsunamis
B. hw t predict tsunamis effectively
C. why tsunamis are the wrst natural disaster
D. hw t prtect the castal areas frm tsunamis
13.What des the underlined wrd “they” in Paragraph 2 refer t?
A. The dart buys.B. The changes in the sea level.
C. The changes in water pressure.D. The present early warning systems.
14.What can we infer abut the new warning system frm Paragraph 3?
A. It has high accuracy.B. It can increase warning time.
C. It can mnitr changeable sea levels.D. It can adapt t varius water wave cnditins.
15.In which clumn f a newspaper may the passage appear?
A. Survival Stries.B. Disaster Rescue.C. Scientific Inventin.D. Natural Envirnment.
