Jim Metzner has spent nearly five decades dcumenting and sharing the sunds f the wrld, frm immersive prtraits f American cities t unfrgettable mments with peple and wildlife in varied places.
Nw mre peple will be able t hear mre f the wrld thrugh Metzner’s tape. The Library f Cngress annunced earlier this mnth that it has acquired the full bdy f his life’s wrk. The recrdings include sundscapes f every descriptin frm arund the wrld and interviews with scientists, artists and lcal peple. Whereas many recrdists fcus entirely n a single subject — nature, music r science — Metzner’s recrdings cnvey varius human experiences accmpanied by the vast range f sunds frm the natural wrld.
Metzner’s career began with a mment f realizatin in the 1970s, when he first ventured nt the campus f UMass Amherst equipped with a stere recrder, micrphne and earphnes. Metzner recalled pushing the red buttn and hearing a lifelike symphny: a cuple walking and talking nearby, a bicycle riding thrugh gravel, a bird flying verhead, bells in the distance. “And I was ging like, ‘Ww, this is amazing. What an extrardinary cincidence!’” he recalled. “But it wasn’t a cincidence — this stuff was happening all the time, I just hadn’t been paying attentin t it. And it was the micrphne and the recrder that said, ‘Wake up ... yu live in a wrld f sund. Here it is.’ And it was, like, handing it t me n a plate.”
Metzner cntinued t fcus n thse mments ver the years. Nw in his 70s, Metzner isn’t hanging up his micrphne quite yet. He tells NPR he’s grateful t the Library f Cngress fr preserving his life’s wrk, which he describes as a deep hnr. But he als wants t make sure it’s actually being heard, nt just “buried in an archive(档案室).”
He hpes mre peple will get t experience — and recgnize the value — f sundscapes, which he describes as “part f ur natural heritage” and “the tuchstnes t ur feelings.”
“Yu can g t a museum and see Diane Arbus’ phtgraphs. Yu can see René Magritte’s paintings,” he adds. “Why nt sundscapes?”
    24. What is special abut Metzner’s recrdings?
    A. They describe the interviews with lcal peple.

    A. A symphny he heard n the campus f UMass Amherst.
    B. A sund-rich mment n the campus f UMass Amherst.
    C. A realizatin that he was well equipped with recrding devices.
    D. A cincidence that he happened t be waken up by the recrder.
    26. Which aspect des Metzner value mst abut his life’s wrk?

Lts f animals live and mve in grups— elephants in herds, wlves in packs, birds in flcks, and fish in schls. Research has shwn that where an individual is lcated in the grup can affect the benefits it gets frm hanging ut in a crwd. Hwever, Shaun Killen, an ecphysilgist at the University f Glasgw in the UK says, researchers haven’t yet fully explred the rle f physilgical prcesses such as digestin in driving animals’ cllective behavir.
Killen and his clleagues recently studied schls f Eurasian minnws(鲦鱼)swimming in a tank against a current. Pieces f fd were cnstantly mving past the fish, and the team recrded hw many each minnw ate and the fishes’ psitins befre and after eating. After calculating the metablic(新陈代谢的)csts f digesting each fish’s meal and cmparing it t the fish’s psitin, the team bserved a trend: fish that had just gulped dwn a big meal mved t the back f the schl, even when they’d swum at the frnt at mst ther times.
“It makes sense that feeding wuld influence individuals’ psitins in a grup,” says Damien Farine, wh studies cllective behavir in birds at the University f Knstanz in Germany, “If a fish is hungry, it’s cmpeting with thers in the schl t eat, and being at the frnt gives it access t mre fd. But nce the fish is full, it desn’t necessarily need t be at the frnt.” In additin, “being at the back f the grup is less energetically cstly fr a range f reasns,” Farine ntes. “An individual at the back desn’t have t cntribute t navigating, and by relaxing the brain lad it saves mre energy.”
Killen says he’s been thinking abut the prs and cns f being at the back f the pack, such as prtectin frm attackers and a bst frm schlmates’ slipstream. Changes in psitin, especially during the basic trade-ff between feeding and mvement, appear t influence grup leadership, infrmatin transfer, and grup decisin making. But the cnsequences f the trade-ffs fr grup pwer and survival are nt yet understd.
    28. What des Killen and his clleagues’ study fcus n?
    A. Hw behaviral traits influence psitin change f individuals in fish schls.
    B. Hw lcatin influences nutritin states f individuals in fish schls.
    C. Hw digestin influences distributin f individuals in fish schls.
    D. Hw lcatin influences benefits f individuals in fish schls.
    29. What d the underlined wrds “gulped dwn” mean in Paragraph 2?
    A. Swallwed.B. Lcated. C. Witnessed. D. Missed.
    30. What can we learn frm Paragraph 3?
    A. A full fish cmpetes t eat at the back.
    B. A hungry fish has easier access t mre fd.
    C. Being at the back saves the energy f a full fish.
    D. Being at the frnt csts a hungry fish less energy.
    31. What is Shaun Killen’s attitude t his study?
    A. Cautius.B. Cnfident. C. Psitive. D. Disappinted.
    D
Clthes were nce used until they fell apart. Nt tday. In high-incme cuntries in particular, clthing and ftwear are increasingly frequently bught, thrwn away and replaced with new fashins, which are themselves sn thrwn away and replaced.
The s-called ‘Fast fashin’ is having a surprising envirnmental impact. Take water. The fashin industry, ne f the wrld’s largest users f water, cnsumes anywhere frm 20 trillin t 200 trillin litres every year. Then there are micrplastics. Plastic fibres are released when we wash plyester(聚酯纤维)and ther plymer-based textiles, and make up between 20% and 35% f the micrplastics chking the ceans. Added t this are specific chemicals, such as thse used t make fabrics stain resistant and the pesticides required t prtect crps such as cttn.
Change is badly needed, but will require the fashin industry t wrk harder t embrace mre f what is knwn as the circular ecnmy. That will invlve at least tw things: refcusing n making things that last, and s encuraging reuse; and mre rapidly expanding the technlgies fr sustainable manufacturing prcesses, especially recycling. There’s a big rle fr research — bth academic and industrial — in achieving these and ther ambitins.
Researchers culd begin by helping t prvide mre accurate estimates f water use. There is als wrk t be dne n imprving and expanding textiles recycling. Undubtedly, used textiles g t landfill in part because there are relatively few systems that cllect, recycle and reuse materials. Such recycling requires the manual separatin f fibres, as well as buttns and zips. Different fibres are nt easy t identify by eye, and verall such manual prcesses are time-cnsuming. Machinery is being develped that can help. Technlgies als exist t recycle used fibres chemically and t create high-quality fibres that can be reused in clthing. But these are nwhere near the scale needed.
Anther challenge fr researchers is t wrk ut hw t get cnsumers and manufacturers t change their behaviur. Other research questins include finding ways t encurage peple t purchase lng lasting gds; explring hw t satisfy desires fr smething new while reducing envirnmental impact; and understanding why certain measures can be successfully scaled up whereas thers fail.
    32. Why des the authr mentin “water”, “micrplastics” and “chemicals” in paragraph 2?
    A. T list examples. B. T prve a pint.
    C. T prvide an idea.D. T give a definitin.
    33. Which f the fllwing ges against the cncept f “circular ecnmy”?
    A. Effrts are made t lengthen the lifespan f textiles.
    B. Wrn-ut clthes are used as dishclths and il rags.
    C. High-quality fibres are created t be reused in clthing.
    D. Fashin industry is encuraged t release new lines mre ften.
    34. What is the right thing fr the fashin industry researchers t d?
    A. T make sure that all f the used textiles g t landfill.
    B. T separate fibres, as well as buttns and zips manually.
    C. T imprve and expand textile recycling t a larger extent.
    D. T encurage cnsumers t satisfy their desires fr fashin.
    35. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Say n t the s-called fast fashin
    B. Address the challenges fr researchers
    C. Embrace mre f the circular ecnmy
    D. Cut fast fashin’s envirnmental impact

I stared back, nt understanding the questin. Lri turned and left the rm. Caught ff-guard by the questin, I lked at Marilyn. “Are there mre pictures f Lisa than f Lri?” Marilyn shrugged and raised her eyebrws in a mtin f puzzlement. “Are yu aware that there are mre pictures f Lisa than Lri?” I added.
Marilyn said, “I’ve never cunted them. I dn’t knw.”
Marilyn’s answer was the same as my thughts, “I hadn’t realized that there was any significant difference. Nw why wuld Lri ask such a questin?” I asked.
Marilyn just shk her head and stared back at me. After a few minutes f thught she said, “When Lisa was brn, yu were taking phtgraphs. Yu hardly went anywhere withut a camera. When Lri was brn, yu were invlved in clred slides (幻灯片). There must be hundreds f slides f Lri smewhere in the huse that Lri has never seen r desn’t remember.”
After digesting Marilyn’s remarks, I agreed. “After Lri leaves, we’ll lk fr thse slides. Wh knws, we may find mre slides f Lri than pictures f Lisa,” I jked.
Later that afternn, when we were alne, we went int the basement where we had stred the bxes that we had brught frm ur previus hme. It wasn’t lng befre we discvered the trays f slides, and fr the rest f the afternn we lked at each tray, pinting ut thse slides that highlighted Lri.
“What are yu ging t d?” Marilyn asked.
“It’s her birthday in a few weeks,” I said, “We’ll select abut ne hundred slides with Lri and cnvert them int pictures, put them int an album and give t her as a gift. I dn’t knw if the album will answer her questin, but at least she’ll knw that we care enugh t find her an answer.”

    读后续写
Over the next few days, we secretly went thrugh all f ur slides. We kept n selecting and rejecting pictures until we were satisfied. Thse pictures brught back memries f the early years f ur marriage and we hped they shwed hw we felt abut ur daughter. Marilyn had them cnverted int phtgraphs. Then, we placed them int an album with a birthday card explaining why her mther and I had put the album tgether. When the album was finally finished, we hid the bk until her birthday.
On Nvember 24, befre leaving fr wrk, I pened her dr and slipped the album inside. Then I left the huse and drve t wrk. I was abut t enter the ffice when the telephne rang. I picked up the receiver, and n the ther end f the receiver, a tiny vice spke, ''I lve yu, Daddy, '' she said and discnnected. The receiver remained against my ear fr a few mre minutes befre I placed it n the telephne. Our message had been delivered and acknwledged.

W: Gd evening, everyne. I recently learnt Arabic in Cair as part f my degree. My interest in the language was due t the passin f ur Arabic lecturer and as the curse prgressed, my interest in the culture als grew with it. I cnsidered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided n Cair due t its energetic cultural scene.
Hwever, in the city, we faced sme challenges, including difficulties finding a htel and accmmdatin as we were a grup f unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shck was intense fr sme f us. One member f ur grup returned hme within the first week. Luckily I became accustmed t the life in Cair gradually.
The biggest challenge f learning Arabic is the discnnectin between the written and the spken frms.
Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absrbing myself in the culture and getting t knw the lcals and even negtiating at a lcal market. Highlights were being invited t a traditinal Arabic meal at ne f the lcals’ hme and being able t cnfidently cmmunicate.
Overall, this experience was utside f my cmfrt zne and allwed me t learn and grw in interesting ways. I encurage thers t cnsider invlving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks fr listening.
Over the next few days, we secretly went thrugh all f ur slides.
On Nvember 24, befre leaving fr wrk, I pened her dr and slipped the album inside.
