    Althugh each f my students had received a PADI(the Prfessinal Assciatin f Diving Instructrs) Open Water Diver certificatin as part f ur marine science prgram, I was frzen in fear and wndering what had happened at the beach. Once certified, my students began t use their new diving skills t carry ut underwater research prjects n the cral reefs(珊瑚礁) near ur island. Being islanders surrunded by water, my students are taught that the cean is nt a dangerus place, but can be very unfrgiving t thse wh make mistakes. In this case, my first thughts were fr their safety and well-being. I did a quick head cunt. They were all in class with all their parts in place. I became less afraid and mre curius abut what had happened. But I was whlly unprepared fr the stry they tld.
    A three-year-ld by playing in the water near the shre was abut t sink. His family members and beachgers rushed t help, carrying the by t the beach, but n ne was sure what t d next. One f my students was at the beach that day and rushed ver t help. She had taken a first-aid curse that I’d taught as an after-schl prgram. She began CPR(心肺复苏) and asked thers t call 911. By the time dctrs arrived, the child was able t breathe in his mther’s arms.
    As teachers, we knw children learn thrugh ur energy and effrt. They becme interested. Sme find their passins and g after their dreams. In this way we knw we have the pwer t change lives. I’d add that nce in a while we have the pwer t save a life.

Then came the cughing. She was cughing like crazy. Her daughter in the passenger seat lked terrified.
    Sydney immediately knew she was chking. Fr an instant, Sydney remembered the first-aid training she had received mre than fur years earlier. Mst 15-year-lds might panic at the sight f this(even mst adults might, t). But nt Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shuted at bth her manager and the wman’s daughter t call 911. Then, she jumped thrugh the drive-thrugh windw and came t the rescue.
    The teen flung the driver’s side dr pen and gt the chking wman t her feet. Then she began t use the Heimlich maneuver(海姆立克急救法). Hwever, she had never actually had t use the life-saving technique befre, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite wrking. Luckily, anther custmer was just a few feet away in the parking lt. She shuted fr help, hping that anther persn’s strength cmbined with hers wuld help frce whatever was in the wman’s muth t finally cme ut. Next, a man wh heard the call fr help ran ver and started using the Heimlich maneuver. Frtunately, it wrked and the wman spat ut the fd stuck in her thrat. Needless t say, the wman was very grateful. Just as she began t catch her breath, first respnders arrived n the scene, and when fficers asked what happened, she tld them all abut Sydney’s heric act. "They said,‘Cngratulatins, yu’re a lifesaver; yu’re a her.’" Sydney recalled.
