Legend says the hliday riginated with the fight against a mythical beast called Nian, wh came dwn frm the muntains t hunt peple n New Year’s Eve. Villagers discvered that Nian feared the clur red, candle light and lud nise. S they began t decrate with the vibrant hue, light their hmes with lanterns and set ff firecrackers t prevent its return.
On New Year’s Eve, my family wuld cme tgether t celebrate with fd prepared by my grandma. Mments befre the cuntdwn, the sund f firecrackers wuld fill every crner f ur apartment and the celebratins cntinued int the next day.
Fr breakfast, we wuld eat yuanxia, a kind f glutinus rice ball, which symblizes the idea f reunin. Then, it was ff t visit my grandparents, wh were already awaiting us and my ther extended family with lucky mney and mre traditinal delicacies!
My favurite part f the hliday came when the adults were playing mahjng. My cusins and I were finally freed frm ur parents. With all the lucky mney, we hit the streets and bught mre snacks and firecrackers!
Having been in Canada fr years, I further lst tuch with my Chinese culture as I gradually dived int my new life in a new cuntry. Maybe it’s time fr me, like her, t reclaim Chinese Lunar New Year.
