[认识自我/]Lking int the gym, I faced reality: I was in charge, and nbdy wuld tell me what t d. It was my first practice as a vlunteer basketball cach fr the lcal secndary schl. That thught served me well thrugh 2 years f my PhD. After finishing tw prjects, I felt burned ut and needed refreshing. I hped regaining my lve f sprts thrugh caching might help. I decided t push past my discmfrt and learn alng the way.
That’s hw I fund myself in that gym. The athletes came in and began shting arund. I cllected myself and began practice with much energy and enthusiasm. Despite my fears, everything went smthly. Afterward, I heard many thught the practice was great, which encuraged me. Maybe I had what it tk t lead.
Arund the same time, my prfessr ffered me an pprtunity t wrk with a master’s student n a prject. I’d have t be a mentr(导师). Thugh nt sure I culd d it, I culdn’t miss the chance.
My prfessr still supprted us, but I had t take charge mst f the time. It was hard. But the lessns learned as a basketball cach seemed t help me find my fting(基础) as a scientific leader, t. Yu dn’t becme a leader after getting enugh experience and knwledge. Leading is a matter f chice. The key is in my willingness t try.

Later, we sat in a circle and I explained that we wuld act ut sme f their stries. The writer wuld chse classmates t be the characters in the stry, and I wuld tell the stry. Then a student std up t annunce which character she’d need. I watched as ne student played a rabbit, anther played a fairy, and anther played a rainbw clud. When the play was ver, the actrs and the "directr" bwed, and the class clapped fr them. The next "directr" jumped t her feet, shuting, "My stry is the next!"
After I taught in this way, my students began t write dwn their wn stries, thugh I always prvided aid in the writing prcess when they needed. The gal f these lessns is nt t turn my students int fluent writers in kindergarten, but t prvide them with the chance t becme writers, t see themselves as strytellers, and t experience the magical feeling when their ideas cme t life.
