The “Challenger Deep”, in the suthern part f the Mariana Trench, at a depth f 11,000 meters(abut 36,000 feet), is the deepest pint f the cean flr, wrld ver. The Mariana Trench was frmed frm cllisin f tw tectnic (构造的) plates, which were parts f the ceanic crust. One plate sank while the ther climbed ver, creating the deepest pint f the cean.
If Munt Everest is placed in the depths f the Mariana Trench, it wuld be ttally submerged in water, with abut 2,000 meters f water abve it! The “Challenger Deep” gets its name frm the British Navy vessel called “HMS Challenger” which made a first measurement f its depth in 1875.
In 1960, man reached the ultimate depth thrugh a special underwater explring space craft, called “Bathyscaphe”. The submersible (可下沉的) vessel called the “Trieste” reached the “Challenger Deep” n 23nd January, 1960. At that depth, the tw men wh were perating the submersible had abut 7 miles f water ver them, which exerted a pressure f 16,000 punds per square inch! Unfrtunately, they culd d little except measuring the depth as their descent raised debris which reduced their visibility t zer.
Later in 1996, the Japanese unmanned remtely perated underwater vehicle (ROV), Kaik made the deepest unmanned dive ever and brught hme samples f bacteria living in these depths. The mst prductive dive f the “Challenger Deep” was made very recently in May 2009.The US built hybrid ROV “Nereus” reached the “Challenger Deep” and spent 10 hurs n the cean flr, sending live vide data and cllecting bilgical samples.

In the 15 years befre that, nly abut ne-third went all the way t the tp.
The study was a prject f researchers at the University f Washingtn and the University f Califrnia, Davis. They fund that the risk f dying n the muntain was 0.5 percent fr wmen and 1.1 percent fr men in recent years. That is dwn frm 1.9 percent and 1.7 percent in the perid frm 1990 and 2005.
The study nted that n a single day in May f last year, 396 climbers had gathered at the narrw path just belw the tp. The area, knwn as the “death zne”, is s narrw that nly a small number f climbers can pass thrugh, ne directly behind anther.
A picture f climbers waiting their turn t g up and dwn thrugh the death zne became famus as it was shared nline. Yet researchers say the crwds were nt the main reasn fr the deaths last year. Hwever, vercrwding des make the climb mre dangerus. If crwding slws climbers (as is expected), this increases their expsure t the elements, which shuld increase risk f an accident r illness. An unexpected strm, earthquake, r landslide culd be disastrus.
