One f ur biggest fears nwadays is that ur kids might smeday get lst in a “sea f technlgy” rather than experiencing the natural wrld. Fear-prducing TV and cmputer games are leading t a serius discnnect between kids and the great utdrs, which will change the wild places f the wrld, its creatures and human health fr the wrse, unless adults get wrking n child’s play.
Each f us has a place in nature we g smetimes, even if it was trn dwn. We cannt be the last generatin t have that place. At this rate, kids wh miss the sense f wnder utdrs will nt grw up t be prtectrs f natural landscapes. “If the decline in parks use cntinues acrss Nrth America, wh will defend parks against encrachment (蚕食)?” asks Richard Luv, authr f Last Child in the Wds.
Withut having a nature experience, kids, can turn ut just fine, but they are missing ut a huge enrichment f their lives. That applies t everything frm their physical health and mental health, t stress levels, creativity and cgnitive (认知的) skills. Experts predict mdern kids will have prer health than their parents — and they say a lack f utside play is surely part f it; research suggests that kids d better academically in schls with a nature cmpnent and that play in nature fsters (培养) leadership by the smartest, nt by the tughest. Even a tiny utdr experience can create wnder in a child. The three-year-ld turning ver his first rck realizes he is nt alne in the wrld. A clump f trees n the radside can be the whle universe in his eyes. We really need t value that mre.
Kids are nt respnsible. They are ver-prtected and frightened. It is dangerus ut there frm time t time, but repetitive stress frm cmputers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhd rite (仪式) f passage.
Everyne, frm develpers, t schls and utdr citizens, shuld help regain fr ur kids sme f the freedm and jy f explring, taking friendship in fields and wds that cement lve, respect and need fr landscape. As parents, we shuld devte sme f ur energies t taking ur kids int nature. This culd yet be ur greatest cause.

Taste is such a subjective matter that we dn’t usually cnduct preference tests fr fd. The mst yu can say abut anyne’s preference is that it’s ne persn’s pinin. But because the tw big cla cmpanies-Cca-Cla and Pepsi Cla-are marketed s aggressively, we’ve wndered hw big a rle taste preference actually plays in brand lyalty. We set up a taste test that challenged peple wh identified themselves as either Cca-cla r Pepsi fans: Find yur brand in a blind tasting.
We invited staff vlunteers wh had a strng liking fr either Cca-Cla Classic r Pepsi, Diet Cke, r Diet Pepsi. These were peple wh thught they’d have n truble telling their brand frm the ther brand.
We eventually lcated 19 regular cla drinkers and 27 diet cla drinkers. Then we fed them with fur unidentified samples f cla ne at a time, regular clas fr the ne grup, diet versins fr the ther. We asked them t tell us whether each sample was Cke r Pepsi; then we analyzed the recrds statistically t cmpare the participants’ chices with what mere guesswrk culd have accmplished.
Getting all fur samples right was a tugh test, but nt t tugh, we thught, fr peple wh believed they culd recgnize their brand. In the end, nly 7 ut f 19 regular cla drinkers crrectly identified their brand f chice in all fur trials. The diet-cla drinkers did a little wrse-nly 7 ut f 27 identified all fur samples crrectly.
Bth grups did better than chance wuld predict, but nearly half the participants in each grup made the wrng chice tw r mre times. Tw peple gt all fur samples wrng. Overall, half the participants did abut as well n the last rund f tasting as n the first, s tiredness, r taste burnut, was nt a factr. Our preference test results suggest that nly a few Pepsi participants and Cke fans may really be able t tell their favrite brand by taste and price.

Her bk described her days grwing up with fur sisters in a family that had n mney. She sketched (勾画) a lving mther wh tk time t be interested in each child, and she tld f the death f a belved sister. She prtrayed her family and friends in her bk Little Wmen. Finally, in July f 1868, she finished writing. With a sigh and a headache, she sent ff all 102 handwritten pages f her bk.
Niles thught the bk was dull, and s did Alctt. But when she received her cpies f the bk, Alctt thught it seemed better than expected. “Nt a bit sensatinal,” she wrte, “but simple and true. We really lived mst f it.” Niles asked sme girls t read Little Wmen, and they lved it.

If a business wants t sell its prducts internatinally, it had better d sme market research first. This is a lessn that sme large American crpratins have learned in the hard way.
What’s in the name?
Smetimes the prblem is the name. When General Mtrs intrduced its Chevy Nva int Latin America, it verlked the fact that Nva in Spanish means “It desn’t g”. Sure enugh, the Chevy Nva never went anywhere in Latin America.
Translatin prblems
Smetimes it is the slgan that desn’t wrk. N cmpany knws this better than Pepsi-Cla, with its “Cme alive with Pepsi!” campaign. The campaign was s successful in the United States that Pepsi translated its slgan literally (按字面意思的) fr its internatinal campaign. As it turned ut, the translatins were nt quite right. Pepsi was begging Germans t “Cme ut f the grave” and telling the Chinese that “Pepsi brings yur ancestrs back frm the grave.”
A picture is wrth a thusand wrds
Other times, the prblem invlves packaging. A picture f a smiling baby has helped sell cuntless jars f Gerber baby fd. When Gerber started selling baby fd in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the US, with the smiling baby n the label. Later they learned that in African cuntries, the picture n the jar shws what the jar has in it, fr many peple there can’t read.
Twist f fate
Even culture and religius factrs and pure cincidence can be invlved. Thrn McAn shes have a Thrn McAn “signature” inside. T peple in Bangladesh, which is a Muslim cuntry, this signature lked like Arabic script fr the wrd Allah. The turning pint f my life was my decisin t give up a prmising business career and study music. My parents, althugh sympathetic, and sharing my lve f music, disapprved f it as a prfessin. This was understandable in view f the family backgrund. My grandfather had taught music fr nearly frty years. Thugh much belved and respected in the cmmunity, he earned barely enugh t prvide fr his large family. As a cnsequence f this example in the family, the very mentin f music as a prfessin carried with it a picture f a risky existence with uncertain financial rewards. My parents insisted n cllege instead f a music schl, and t cllege I went-quite happily, as I remember, fr althugh I lved my vilin and spent mst f my spare time practicing, I had many ther interests.
Befre my graduatin frm cllege, the family met with severe financial reverses and I felt it my duty t leave cllege and take a jb. Thus was I launched upn a business career—which I always think f as the wasted years. Nw I d nt fr a mment mean t disparage (贬低) business. My whle pint is that it was nt fr me. I went int it fr mney, and aside frm the satisfactin f being able t help the family, mney is all I gt ut f it. It was nt enugh. I felt that life was passing me by.
I cntinued t make mney, and finally, bit by bit, accumulated enugh t enable me t g abrad t study music. I resigned frm my psitin and, feeling like a man released frm jail, sailed fr Eurpe. I stayed fur years, wrked harder than I had ever dreamed f wrking befre and enjyed every minute f it. “Enjyed” is t mild a wrd. I walked n air. I really lived. I was a free man and I was ding what I lved t d and what I was meant t d.
If I had stayed in business, I might be a cmparatively wealthy man tday, but I d nt believe I wuld have made a success f living. I wuld have given up all thse inner satisfactins that mney can never buy.

Mnarch butterflies migrate (迁徙) by the millins each year, making the trip frm nrthern areas f the Cntinent t Califrnia and Mexic and back. Because mst butterflies nly live fr a few weeks t a few mnths, it takes several generatins f butterflies t cmplete the migratin
As mnarch butterflies are a threatened species with their ppulatin numbers in decline, Patrick Guerra, an assistant prfessr at the University f Cincinnati, and his clleagues wanted t see what types f envirnmental stress might be linked t their decline.
“We use mnarch butterflies as a mdel system t understand lng-distance animal migratin. Our gal was t understand hw envirnmental stress, such as different types f stress caused by urbanizatin, impacts animal migratry phenmena,” Guerra says.
Fr their study, researchers cnducted lab studies where they reprduced the effects f artificial light pllutin with butterflies using a flight simulatr (模拟器).
“The flight simulatr is like a butterfly treadmill (跑步机), in which we can study the flight behavir f insects in cntrlled, experimental cnditins. We first tested if mnarchs treated a single, artificial light surce as if it were the actual sun during the day,” Guerra says.
“Once we established that they did, we then tested hw the mnarchs wuld behave when expsed t this same artificial light surce during their night.”
Butterflies stayed quiet and unmving when they were first placed in the flight simulatr in the dark. But as sn as scientists turned n the light, they started flying. The light made them believe that night was day and this can cause them t fly lnger at night r start flying t early.
The study has fund that the internal circadian (昼夜) clck f butterflies functins nrmally when they are expsed t natural day night lighting cycles, but artificial light, such as a streetlight, at night can thrw ff a mnarch butterfly’s internal cmpass. It can affect their circadian rhythms, which can make the mnarch butterflies get lst when they try t fly the next day. This shws withut darkness, the circadian clck f butterflies cannt functin prperly.
“When expsed t artificial light, the light can perturb the nrmal functining f the animal’s circadian clck,” Guerra says. “Light pllutin, particularly nighttime light pllutin, causes animals t experience light at a time when they are nt suppsed t, e.g., at night when they are nrmally in the dark, and are at rest. Expsure t such light can prevent the behavir and bilgical prcess f animals which they rely n r that are regulated by the circadian clck.”
30.Why did the researchers carry ut the study?
A.T lk fr the reasn fr butterflies’ migratin
B.T test what actin shuld be taken t prtect butterflies.
C.T knw abut the circadian rhythms f migratry animals.
D.T find ut hw the envirnmental stress affects animal migratin.

A.The mnarchs mistk a single, artificial light as the actual sun during the day.
B.The Butterflies mved quietly when first placed in the flight simulatr in the dark
C.The mnarchs gt lst in directin when the light in the flight simulatr was n.
D.The Butterflies were never at rest when they are expsed t the light.

Keep in mind that there’s nthing wrng with remaining “undecided” r “undeclared” fr the first few years f yur cllege career. Yu can use this time t decide what yu’re interested in. Als, keep in mind that even if yu d declare a majr yur freshman year, yu can always change yur mind. Abut ne-third f first-time cllege students change their majr within three years. Even mre, ver 60% f cllege graduates say they wuld g back and change their majr if they culd, primarily t pursue their passin areas and expand their jb pprtunities.
Explre Yur Passins and Abilities. Set aside sme time t really explre yur passins and take stck f yur unique abilities. With an undeclared majr t start, yu can take time t really delve deep int what interests yu. Jin clubs arund campus t cnnect with fellw students wh share yur interests. Take electives in areas that yu might nt therwise have an pprtunity t experience. Fr example, when else might yu be able t take a petry curse r an art histry seminar? Cllege is the perfect time t step ut f yur bx and expand yur hrizns. As a student with an undeclared majr, yu’re uniquely psitined t d just that.
Cnsider Emplyment Opprtunities. While it’s imprtant t chse a majr that interests yu, it’s als critical t chse a cllege majr that will prvide yu with future emplyment pprtunities. Statistically, the cllege majrs that tend t have the mst earning pwer are in STEM. These majrs might include health sciences r cmputer engineering. Business majrs can als expect a higher than average earning ptential. That being said, emplyers frequently recgnize that graduates wh majred in the liberal arts have valuable sft skills, t, including strng cmmunicatin, written and verbal skills, and leadership abilities. The key is t pick a majr that will be marketable fr the career yu’re interested in pursuing.
Talk t an Academic Advisr. If yu need a little guidance, set up an appintment with an academic advisr r career cunselrs. Career develpment cunselrs and academic advisrs can help yu narrw dwn yur ptins. If yu have an idea f what classes yu’ve mst enjyed and what career paths are mst appealing t yu, wrking with ne f these prfessinals might be the final push yu need t pick a majr.

When yu feel thankful fr things yu’ve received r smething that’s happened, that’s gratitude. It’s impssible t feel it in a vacuum; thers are always respnsible, whether they’re lved nes, strangers r a higher pwer. “Gratitude is hw yu relate t thers, when yu see yurself in cnnectin with things larger than yurself” says Willibald Ruch, a psychlgy prfessr at the University f Zurich.
Nwadays, t many peple dn’t stp t appreciate what they have, and much less express gratitude. Our instant-satisfactin lifestyle may be t blame. “With cmmercial and scial media, everything is speeding the yunger generatin t make them feel that they’re the centre f the universe,” says Tamik Zablith, funder f the Lndn-based etiquette cnsulting firm Minding Manners. “If it’s all abut them, why thank thers?”
Hwever, studies have shwn that peple wh express gratitude increase their happiness levels, lwer their bld-pressure levels, get better-quality sleep, imprve their relatinships, have a psitive impact n their depressin levels and are less affected by pain. And gratitude’s psitive effects are lng-lasting. Canadian researchers fund that peple wh wrte letters f thanks r perfrmed gd deeds fr a mere six-week perid were able t imprve their mental health, decrease their bdily pain and feel mre energetic fr up t six mnths.
What abut gratitude recipients wh receive messages f thanks? Research has cnfirmed that the recipients experience psitive emtins when they’re singled ut. “Thse are happy surprises—yu may nt be expecting the favur t be returned,” says J-Ann Tsang, assciate prfessr f psychlgy at Baylr University. When smene is the recipient f unexpected kindness r gratitude, he’s mre likely t return the favur r pass kindness n. One study fund that when smene is thanked, it mre than dubles his chances f being helpful again, prbably because he enjys feeling scially valued. Zablith likes the reactin she gt when she rewarded a stranger wh held the dr pen fr her at a cffee shp with his rightful place in line in frnt f her. “The lk n his face was shck,” says Zablith. “He wuld be nicer t the cashier, the next persn he wuld see at wrk. There’s a trickle-dwn effect.”
The give-and-take f gratitude can als deepen relatinships. Studies shw that when yur partner regularly expresses gratitude, making yu feel appreciated, yu’re mre likely t return appreciative, grateful feelings and stay cmmitted t each ther. One fund that sharing gratitude with a partner makes yu feel mre respnsible fr his well-being and mre satisfied with the relatinship. “Yu feel clser t the ther persn, and they feel clser t yu, Tsang says. “That creates an upward spiral.’

根据第二段中“At this rate, kids wh miss the sense f wnder utdrs will nt grw up t be prtectrs f natural landscapes. (这样下去,那些失去了户外奇妙感觉的孩子长大后就不会成为自然景观的保护者)”以及“If the decline in parks use cntinues acrss Nrth America, wh will defend parks against encrachment (蚕食)? (如果整个北美公园使用率持续下降,谁来保护公园不受侵蚀?)”可知,本段中心思想是期望孩子们发展成自然的保护者。故选D项。
6.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Withut having a nature experience, kids, can turn ut just fine, but they are missing ut a huge enrichment f their lives. That applies t everything frm their physical health and mental health, t stress levels, creativity and cgnitive (认知的) skills. (没有大自然的经历,孩子们可以过得很好,但他们错过了丰富他们生活的巨大机会。这有利于他们的身体健康和心理健康、压力水平、创造力和认知技能等方方面面)”可知,没有经历过自然的孩子身体和精神都不太健康。故选C项。
7.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“It is dangerus ut there frm time t time, but repetitive stress frm cmputers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhd rite (仪式) f passage. (外面的环境有时很危险,但来自电脑的重复压力正在取代折断手臂,成为童年的必经之路)”可知,作者认为儿童骨折是他们成长过程中的自然经历。故选B项。
8.词句猜测题。划线词句后文“As parents, we shuld devte sme f ur energies t taking ur kids int nature. (作为父母,我们应该花一些精力带我们的孩子进入大自然)”说明父母应该把孩子带进大自然,增强孩子对大自然的热爱,从而推知划线词句“Everyne, frm develpers, t schls and utdr citizens, shuld help regain fr ur kids sme f the freedm and jy f explring, taking friendship in fields and wds that cement lve, respect and need fr landscape. (每个人,从开发商,到学校和户外市民,都应该帮助我们的孩子重获探索的自由和乐趣,在田野和树林中建立友谊,cement对自然风景的热爱、尊重和需求)”其中划线词汇应为“增强”的意思。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“One f ur biggest fears nwadays is that ur kids might smeday get lst in a ‘sea f technlgy’ rather than experiencing the natural wrld. (我们现在最大的恐惧之一是,我们的孩子可能有一天会迷失在‘科技的海洋’中,而不是去体验自然世界)”可推知,作者表达了他对孩子们缺乏自然体验的担忧。故选C项。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章用偏好测试证明了味觉偏好是高度主观的这样一个事实。
10.细节理解题。根据文章第一段中“we’ve wndered hw big a rle taste preference actually plays in brand lyalty. We set up a taste test that challenged peple wh identified themselves as either Cca-cla r Pepsi fans: Find yur brand in a blind tasting. (我们想知道口味偏好在品牌忠诚度中究竟扮演了多大的角色。我们设立了一个品尝测试,挑战那些自称为可口可乐或百事可乐粉丝的人:在盲品中找到你的品牌)”可知在自称为可口可乐或百事可乐粉丝的人中做偏好测试,让他们盲品,看是否能够通过口味偏好找到自己的品牌。由此可知,做偏好测试是为了找出偏好在人喝饮料中起着什么作用;故选C项。
11.推理判断题。根据文章第四段中“In the end, nly 7 ut f 19 regular cla drinkers crrectly identified their brand f chice in all fur trials. The diet-cla drinkers did a little wrse-nly 7 ut f 27 identified all fur samples crrectly.
根据文章最后一段中“Bth grups did better than chance wuld predict, but nearly half the participants in each grup made the wrng chice tw r mre times. Tw peple gt all fur samples wrng. Overall, half the participants did abut as well n the last rund f tasting as n the first, s tiredness, r taste burnut, was nt a factr.
根据文章第一段“Taste is such a subjective matter that we dn’t usually cnduct preference tests fr fd. (口味是一个如此主观的事情,我们通常不会对食物进行偏好测试)”可知文章开头提出“口味是一个如此主观的事情”这样一个观点,文章后面段落用一个偏好测试来证明了这一观点,全文也都是围绕这一观点在进行阐述;故选项C“shw that taste preference is highly subjective (表明味觉偏好是高度主观的)”是本篇文章的写作目的;故选A项。

根据第二段中“Alctt wrte a simple stry f life in her family, their pillw fights n Saturday nights and the amateur plays they perfrmed. “Our experiences may prve interesting, thugh I dubt it.” (“Gd jke,” she wrte years later.) (奥尔科特写了一个简单的故事,关于她的家庭生活,他们在周六晚上的枕头大战,以及他们表演的业余戏剧。“我们的经历可能会很有趣,尽管我对此表示怀疑。”(“好笑话,”她多年后写道。))”可知,她的书主要描写了一些有趣的家庭琐事,所以有趣可以用来描述奥尔科特的书。故选B项。
16.细节理解题。由文章前两段可判断出这些事件发生的先后顺序。根据第一段中““I dn’t want t write a stry abut girls! I dn’t knw anything abut girls,” Luisa May Alctt tld her publisher, Mr. Niles. (“我不想写一个关于女孩的故事!”我对女孩一无所知,”路易莎·梅·奥尔科特(Luisa May Alctt)对她的出版商奈尔斯说)”以及“Niles had asked her t write abut smething she knew, instead f the rmantic adventure stries she had been writing. “S I pld away,” Alctt wrte, “thugh I dn’t enjy this srt f thing.”(奈尔斯让她写一些她知道的东西,而不是她一直在写的浪漫冒险故事。 可推知,ceb顺序是正常的;再根据第二段中“Alctt wrte a simple stry f life in her family, their pillw fights n Saturday nights and the amateur plays they perfrmed.(奥尔科特写了一个简单的故事,关于她的家庭生活,他们在周六晚上的枕头大战,以及他们表演的业余戏剧)”和“She prtrayed her family and friends in her bk Little Wmen. Finally, in July f 1868, she finished writing.(她在《小妇人》一书中描绘了她的家人和朋友。
根据倒数第二段“Niles thught the bk was dull, and s did Alctt.(奈尔斯认为这本书枯燥乏味,奥尔科特也这么认为)”Niles认为这本书枯燥乏味,可推知,对她的作品是不满意的。故选C项。
根据第一段中“But she was desperate fr mney. She seemed t be the nly ne in her family wh culd make any mney.(但她急需钱。她似乎是家里唯一能赚钱的人)”可推知,奥尔科特从事写作工作很大程度上是为了赚钱。故选C项。
19.细节理解题。根据最后一段“In three mnths, all the cpies f Little Wmen had sld. It was already time t print mre bks! Niles thught he culd sell three r fur hundred mre cpies. “An hnest publisher and a lucky authr made a dull bk int a glden egg fr an ugly duckling,” Alctt wrte in 1885. Later, with a great sigh f relief, she was able t write, “Paid ff all the debts! Nw I feel that I culd die in peace. If my head hlds ut, I’ll d all I nce hped t d.”(三个月后,《小妇人》就卖光了。是时候印刷更多的书了!奈尔斯认为他还能多卖出三四百本。奥尔科特在1885年写道:“一个诚实的出版商和一个幸运的作者把一本枯燥的书变成了一只丑小鸭的金蛋。”后来,她终于松了一口气,写下:“还清了所有的债务!现在我觉得我可以平静地死去。如果我的脑袋还在,我就会做我曾经希望做的一切。”)”可知,当《小妇人》卖完后,Alctt也还清了她所有的债务。故选A项。

根据倒数第二段中“Later they learned that in African cuntries, the picture n the jar shws what the jar has in it, fr many peple there can’t read.”(后来他们了解到,在非洲国家,罐子上的图案显示了罐子里的东西,因为那里的许多人不识字。) 故选A。
根据最后一段中“T peple in Bangladesh, which is a Muslim cuntry, this signature lked like Arabic script fr the wrd Allah. In that cuntry, feet are cnsidered unclean, and Muslims felt the cmpany was ffending Gd’s name by having peple walk n it.”(对孟加拉国这个穆斯林国家的人来说,这个签名看起来像阿拉伯文字“Allah”。
根据第一段“If a business wants t sell its prducts internatinally, it had better d sme market research first. This is a lessn that sme large American crpratins have learned in the hard way.”(如果一个企业想要在国际上销售其产品,最好先做一些市场调查。

根据第四段第一句“If I had stayed in business, I might be a cmparatively wealthy man tday, but I d nt believe I wuld have made a success f living.”(如果我继续做生意,我或许现在是一个相当富有的人,但是我相信我不会取得生活的成功。) 故选A项。

根据倒数第三段“Butterflies stayed quiet and unmving when they were first placed in the flight simulatr in the dark. But as sn as scientists turned n the light, they started flying. The light made them believe that night was day and this can cause them t fly lnger at night r start flying t early.(当蝴蝶第一次被放置在黑暗中的飞行模拟器中时,它们保持安静,一动不动。但当科学家们一打开灯,它们就开始飞行。光线使它们相信夜晚是白天,这可能会导致它们在夜间飞行时间更长或过早开始飞行)”可知,帝王蝶会将单一的人造光误以为是白天的太阳。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“This shws withut darkness, the circadian clck f butterflies cannt functin prperly.(这表明,没有黑暗,蝴蝶的生物钟就不能正常工作)”以及最后一段“Light pllutin, particularly nighttime light pllutin, causes animals t experience light at a time when they are nt suppsed t, e.g., at night when they are nrmally in the dark, and are at rest. Expsure t such light can prevent the behavir and bilgical prcess f animals which they rely n r that are regulated by the circadian clck.(光污染,特别是夜间光污染,会导致动物在不应该的时间体验光,例如,在它们通常处于黑暗中和处于休息状态的夜间。

根据文章倒数第二段中的“When smene is the recipient f unexpected kindness r gratitude, he’s mre likely t return the favur r pass kindness n.(当一个人收到意想不到的善意或感激时,他更有可能回报这种恩惠或将善意传递下去。)”
