In Muli cunty, Sichuan prvince, peple ften g t temples n the third day f the new year n the Chinese lunar calendar t pray (祈祷) that there will be n frest fire disasters (灾难) in the cming year.
Things ften dn’t turn ut that way, hwever. The cunty’s name is nt knwn t mst Chinese befre. It was in the headlines n March 30, 2019, when 31 peple, including 27 firefighters, died in a frest fire.
This year, as peple paid tribute (致敬) t the dead, new battles against fires had begun.
On Saturday evening, a frested area in the cunty was n fire. Only 15 hurs after the fire began, it had destryed 30 hectares (公顷) f frest, accrding t the lcal fire cntrl headquarters (总部).
Muli is nt the nly area plagued (困扰) by frest fires this year. Many regins are facing an even grimmer (更严峻的) fire cntrl situatin this year.
On March 17, 2020 alne, 56 frest fires happened acrss the cuntry, accrding t the Ministry f Emergency Management.
