Zheng Xin, a prfessr at the Schl f Jurnalism & Cmmunicatin at Nanjing University, says a grassrts-riented rather than elite-based culture is emerging in China. While individuality and persnal pinins are nw tlerated and celebrated, audiences still yearn fr a cllective recgnitin f their wn identity.
“The ppularity f music talent shws is inevitable in an era in which audiences seek ut ‘idls’ with a similar scial backgrund t their wn,” says Zheng.
Lu Gang, a prfessr in Chinese literature at East China Nrmal University, agrees.
“When participants wh belng t the same class as them take the sptlight and succeed, it resnates with mass audiences.”
Lu adds that the new generatin is changing its attitude tward shwing ff talents, which is als fueling the phenmenn. Chinese tend t be shy and are reluctant t demnstrate their talents due t a traditinal value f humbleness. But recent decades have witnessed an increasing willingness amng yung Chinese t shw ff their talents, highlight their individuality and be unique.
