their life savings n their children's educatin, while (58) individuals can simply buy their way in. Besides, these rankings face criticism fr ptentially influencing clleges t make minr adjustments in (59) t imprve their psitin n the table.
I didn't care abut cllege rankings fr years until I recently saw smething different. This past Octber, Shanghai Ranking Cnsultancy (60) the Glbal Ranking f Academic Subjects 2023, which assesses universities wrldwide acrss 55 subjects in five disciplines. It is said t emply a mre in-depth (61) t evaluate the perfrmance f universities. And this makes it easier fr prspective students t chse the best cllege fr their specific subject. But hw much weight shuld yu give t these rankings?
In my pinin, cllege rankings can serve as a reference, ffering a (62) int the reputatin and strengths f institutins. Hwever, they shuld nt be the nly determining factr fr yu. There are many aspects t a university educatin that can nly be (63) when yu are clear abut yur gals.

After all, what lies in the heart f educatin is “U” .

“Blame My Brain” by Nicla Mrgan, reviewed by Rsalie Warren

Nt (70) , all this activity is nt withut its dwnside fr the persn “within”, and it ges alng way twards (71) why teenagers can be s difficult t live with and t cpe with themselves.
There are als brain-based explanatins f why teenagers need s much sleep, why they dn't tidy their rms, why they cme (72) when the rest f the wrld is ging t sleep and why sme f them, at least, are risk-takers. There's stuff abut alchl and drugs and why such
things are nt gd fr the brain, but all f it is written in a very (73) and understanding way that I think teenagers will warm t.
Nicla Mrgan is nt a neurlgist r a (74) scientist, but she clearly dne a great deal f research and (75) experts including Prfessr Simn Barn-Chen and Prfessr Susan Greenfield, amng many ther eminent names in the field. Mrgan has a gift fr simplifying and explaining (76) subject matter with a light but precise tuch, and she is careful t (77) between established facts and theries and speculatins f her wn and ther peple's.

There are diagrams, tests, phts relating t questins like What emtins can yu recgnize? D yu (79) ther emtins with anger? What kind f thinker are yu? Which mental tasks d yu find cmparatively easy r difficult? There's als sund advice fr addictin, self-harm, depressin and ther (80) illnesses, and sme pinters twards recgnizing when yu may need t seek help.

a detached efficiency. “Tw laves, half a pund f sugar, and atin f pwdered milk,” he recited. The prtins seemed t shrink each week, mirrring the dwindling hpe in peple's hearts.
Clutching her meager supplies, Emma hurried thrugh the bmbed-ut streets, ddging craters and debris. The city, nce vibrant and bustling, nw lay in a hushed surrender t scarcity and fear. At hme, her family's small garden ffered a sharp cntrast t the deslatin arund. Here, amidst the rws f struggling vegetables, her father tiled.
“Dad, let me help,” Emma ffered, taking the shvel frm his weary hands. Tgether, they dug int the earth, creating a hidden cache fr extra fd. It was a secret they guarded fiercely, knwing that in times f shrtage, even neighbrs culd turn against each ther ut f desperatin.
As they wrked, Emma's mind wandered t the days befre the war, when fd was abundant and their garden was a surce f jy, nt just survival. In the evenings, the family gathered arund a small table, sharing their ratined fd. Cnversatin flwed, weaving tales f better times, igniting sparks f hpe. Despite the hardship, they fund reasns t smile. Emma's father wuld recunt stries frm his yuth, tales f adventure that seemed like fairy tales in their grim surrundings. Her mther wuld hum ld tunes, filling their hme with a semblance f warmth and nrmalcy.
As winter deepened, the ratins grew scarcer, and the hidden cache in the garden became their lifeline. Each day,Emma and her father wuld check the hle, ensuring their precius supplies were safe. The hle, a mere cavity in the grund, symblized their resilience, a refusal t succumb t despair.

Early n I thught this family was a bunch f cmplainers. But the fcus f this reality
shw is hw sweet family life was in the tugh wartime era, which really tuched me.
But as Iwatched I nted that the 1940s mid-class family life was nt that unbearable. Even thugh they didn’t have labr-saving facilities, they still had cal fire. Maybe, it's nly due t mdern peple’s sense f privilege that they prmptly frget what immense, bdily labr was invlved in the previus chre it replaced. S, the experiment was nt that “real” ?!
Therefre, I recmmend, but nt highly, this shw t yu.
/10 Must See TV-Really! Lily June, 2021
Fr anyne interested in “Reality TV” with an emphasis n “Real”, checkut 1940's Huse
as sn as yu can. The Hymer family frm nrthern England spends 9 weeks living the life f a suburban 1940's huse during the infamus Lndn blitz. Everything they use, wear, purchase, read cmes frm that time perid - including ratin bks, blackut curtains, Victry gardens, and a self-built bmb shelter.
What makes this “Huse” installment the best in a lng line (see “Frntier Huse”, “Clnial Huse”, “1900 Huse”) is the family's willingness t immerse themselves in the prject whleheartedly. Yu as the viewer really begin t sympathize with the Hymer family's struggles t live a 1940's life with a 21st century mindset. I think mst peple will cme away liking the attitude and spirit f the mther the best - she truly embdies the British spirit that was s essential and prevalent during England's darkest hur.
This is 3 hurs f “histry” that nne will want t end. Children wuld als enjy this as there are 2 yung bys (ages 10 and 7) wh participate in the prgram whleheartedly.
/10 A bit sinister David February,
2023
Althugh it's as well made as the ther PBS reality shws, this ne was disturbing. Many f the hardships impsed n the Hymers are by design, nt circumstance. A cmmittee f seven r eight experts privately judges them in a star chamber and decideshw strict ratining will be and hw much they will be fined fr infractins. Watching the children g hungry while the experts debated hw much t cut the fd budget bthered me. The Hymers live mre like lab rats than adventurers. It's als hard t get wrked up abut hw much wartime Brits suffered frm ratining since it was nthing cmpared t the hardships undergne by eastern Eurpeans, Asians and even their wn sldiers. The shw was simply t narrw in scpe and sinister.

Dear bss - Yu have always tried t attract yung and yungish cnsumers, and ur cnsultants have always cme up with new ways t label them. I dn’t need t remind yu that “millennials” and, increasingly, “GenZ” are ur mst imprtant markets. The truble is that cming up with rules t define aswarm f humanity is mre art than science. It is liable t apply steretypes. Luckily yu have me, and I’m here t tell yu that much f what is written abut marketing t tday’s mst prized cnsumers is a myth.
Scial media has just changed the ways peple discver brands frm viewing televisin, newspapers and magazines t surfing Instagram and TikTk; it has weakened the pwer f marketing as a whle. Such is the ease with which digital natives can fact-check ur tricky marketing claims that it is getting harder t build brand lyalty. Online, cmmunicatin is cheap and prices are readily Ggled.
There is a similar temptatin t think that physical shps n lnger matter. Yung cnsumers lve their Amazn deliveries. But what wrks best is the seamless cmbinatin f the digital and physical wrlds. Remember thse nline-nly influencer-backed beauty brands like Glssier, which tk the wrld by strm during the pandemic? It turns ut that they struggle t get repeat business and have had t pair up with physical retailers. If we want t succeed, we need t ffer the best f bth physical and virtual wrlds.
GenZ will cnsider a brand’s sustainability and scial impact, but cnsidering smething isn’t surrendering t it. They are never brand-slaved. It is chiefly yungsters wh buy cheap “fast-fashin” utfits t wear nce and then send t landfill. Als, yungsters careless fr cnsumer byctts than its virtue-signaling parents, thus pen t varius brands. N wnder, mst brands riginate frm yungsters with duel identities f prducers and cnsumers.
What determines the shpping mde f a generatin is their mindset. In GenZ, lies are easily expsed nline, where everyne lves a takedwn and hates hypcrisy. We are peple just as ur yung custmers are and peple will always buy sincerity.
88. What is the article primarily warning yung cnsumers against in marketing? A. The excessive use f digital advertising and ignring traditinal media.
B. The use f influencers and scial media platfrms fr prduct prmtin. C. Fcusing slely n Gen Z withut cnsidering ther demgraphic grups. D. Relying n utdated perceptins f yung cnsumer behavirs.
89. Why is it challenging t build brand lyalty amng yunger cnsumers in the digital age?
A. Yung cnsumers are less interested in brand lyalty.
B. Digital natives can checkut marketing claims.
C. Yung cnsumers prefer shpping in physical stres.
D. Scial media platfrms are misguiding in brand establishment.
90. What is suggested abut the imprtance f physical stres in mdern retailing?
A. Physical stres are becming bslete due t the rise f e-cmmerce.
B. Yung cnsumers nly prefer nline shpping and hme deliveries.
C. A cmbinatin f digital and physical retail experiences is mst effective.
D. Physical stres shuld be cmpletely replaced by digital marketing strategies. 91. What’s the attitude f yung cnsumers twards brands?
A. They cmmit t scial justice and byctt unethical brands.
B. They cnsider a brand’s sustainability but are nt cntrlled by it.
C. They are indifferent t a brand's quality and scial influence.
D. They nly supprt brands that are created by their peers.

Charles Darwin frmulated the mst successful thery in the histry f bilgy: the thery f evlutin. He was als respnsible fr anther grand thery: the thery f emtin, which dminated his field fr mre than a century. Its cre principle was that the mind cnsists f tw cmpeting frces: the ratinal and the emtinal. 92
A. Emtins play a critical rle in shaping ur thughts and decisins, subtly influencing the framewrk f ur reasning even when we believe we are thinking ratinally.
B. He believed that emtins played a cnstructive rle in the lives f nn-human animals, while the usefulness f emtins was largely replaced by the evlutin f reasn in humans.
C. That can prduce better judgments in situatins where risk aversin (厌恶) is inapprpriate, as when yu are analyzing stcks (股票) r playing pker.
D. Anger, while ften perceived negatively, can smetimes fuel ur mtivatin and reduce ur perceptin f risk, enabling mre decisive actins in certain situatins.
E. Studies shw that thse with high levels f emtinal intelligence fare better in their persnal and prfessinal lives.
F. If emtins aid ratinal reasning, hw des that wrk?
We nw knw that, n the cntrary, emtins enhance ur prcess f reasning and aid ur decisin-making. In fact, we can't make decisins, r even think, withut being influenced by ur emtins.
93 Perhaps the mst imprtant discvery regarding the rle f emtin is that even when yu believe yu are exercising cld, lgical reasn, yu are nt. Peple are nt usually aware f this, but the very framewrk (框架) f their thught prcess is highly influenced by what they are feeling at the time - smetimes subtly (细微地).
Cnsider anger, fr example. Backed by the threat f attack, anger creates incentives (动机) fr thers t cmfrt the angry individual. Yur mental calculatins increase the imprtance yu place n yur wn welfare and gals at the expense f thers’ . Caches tap int anger as a mtivatinal tl because the fcus n the self encurages athletes t push themselves t achieve their gals. Anger als causes yu t perceive less risk. 94
The new view f emtin may nt crrespnd t the way Darwin saw it, but it des supprt ne f the basic cnclusins f his thery f evlutin. Humans are nt as different frm nn-human animals as peple believed. What can we learn frm this? The first and mst crucial step is self- awareness. 95 By studying ur wn emtins, we can read thers’ better and cmmunicate mre effectively. Once we are in tuch with ur true feelings, we can take steps t manage them whenever it benefits.
