Fifteen years ag, Clayburne Elder was a twenty smething frm Utah, standing in the back f a Bradway theatre watching “Putnam Cunty Spelling Bee”, when an act f kindness pened a dr t new pssibilities.

Elder had never seen Sweeney Tdd, s he bught “a great seat”. Starring in that prductin was the legendary Patti LuPne. “That did nt seem real. Patti LuPne... she seemed like a persn yu read abut in a bk r heard abut smewhere, but nt smene yu saw perfrm,” Elder said.
He then tried his best t earn a place n the stage. LuPne is nw his cstar in the hit musical Cmpany—a turning pint f fate that ges back t the stranger wh gave him the means t watch ne f Bradway's biggest prductins. “It takes that kind f genersity t shw yu what genersity can be, t turn arund and d it again,” Elder said.
Giving back is nw a big part f his life. Once a mnth, he and his 4yearld sn pay fr a stranger's meal at their lcal diner. Recently, he has started giving away free tickets t his shw thrugh scial media.

Sherry Ga is puring cffee made frm singlerigin beans, hping that her Mandarin Cffee Stand in the city f Pasadenawill, Califrnia intrduces yu t yur new favrite cffee and turns yur precnceptins abut Chinese cffee beans upside dwn.
Much f the Western wrld imprts its cffee frm Africa and Suth America. But Ga hpes that thrwing light n Yunnansurced cffee culd expse custmers t the cffeeprducing regin and help t break dwn prejudice against the beans, which fr decades, until nly a few years ag, were primarily used fr instant prducts.
“We wanted t highlight Chinese cffee because a lt f peple never had Chinese cffee befre,” Ga said. “Sme have the mindset that it's bad r it's cheap, but that's nt the case anymre. It's been changing s much ver the last decade.”
Recent experimentatin with prcessing, such as the additin f fruit r sugarcane mlasses during the prductin, is leading Yunnan's cffee t mre flavrful results. “Every time a new prduct cmes in, it tastes better than the last ne,” Ga said.
Farmers in China have grwn tea fr mre than 3,000 years, but cffee has been grwn there fr nly abut a century in small quantities, with an uptick in the 1980s with gvernment invlvement. And the turn f the century and the 2010s saw a sharp grwth with internatinal crpratins investing in the regin's crps, initially fr use in instant cffee.
But in the last 10 t 15 years, tastes and demand fr specialty and highgrade cffees emerged, especially frm lcal grwers and shps. The dmestic demand fr Chinagrwn cffee has risen s dramatically that Ga says it's nw much mre expensive.

Mst pwer prducing wearable device require wearers t perfrm intense exercise r depend n external surces such as sunlight r large changes in temperature. But the new strip uses a passive system t generate electricity frm sweat in yur fingertips, even if yu are sleeping r sitting cmpletely still. This is because the finger tips are the sweatiest part f the bdy. S, thanks t a smart spnge material, this can be cllected and prcessed by cnductrs.
The energy harvester prduced small amunts f electricity when the wearer presses dwn r starts t sweat, r frm light finger tapping. It des this by cnverting activities like typing, texting, r playing the pian int extra charge.
Finger tips have ne f the highest cncentratins f sweat grands in the bdy, with cach finger prducing between 100 and 1,000 times mre sweat than mst ther areas, accrding t the researchers.
Cfirst authr dctral student Mr. Bin said: “The reasn why we feel sweatier n ther parts f the bdy is that thse spts are nt well ventilated (通风的). By cntrast, the finger tips are always expsed t air, s the sweat evaprated as it cmes ut. S rather than letting it evaprate, we use ur device t cllect this sweat, and it can generate a significant amunt f energy.”
