MIT researchers have develped a way t incrprate(融入)electrnic sensrs int fabrics, allwing them t create shirts r ther garments that culd be used t mnitr health signs such as temperature and heart rate. The sensr-embedded suits can be made t fit clse t the bdy f the persn wearing them.
"We can have electrnic parts r lab-made electrnics embedded within the textiles(织物)that we wear every day, creating cmfrtable suits," says Dagdeviren, а prfessr at MIT. His grup set ut t create suits mre similar t the clthes we nrmally wear, using а fabric that has remvable electrnic sensrs in it.
"In ur case, the textile is nt electrically functinal. It's just а passive element f ur suit s that yu can wear the devices cmfrtably during yur daily activities," Dagdeviren says. "Our main gal was t measure the physical activity f the bdy all frm the same bdy part, withut requiring any fixture r any tape."
The electrnic sensrs cnsist f lng flexible strips(细条). These channels have small penings that allw the sensrs t be expsed t the skin. Fr this study, the researchers designed а shirt with 30 temperature sensrs and an accelermeter that can measure the wearer's mvement, heart rate, and breathing rate. The suit can then transmit(传输)this data wirelessly t а smartphne.
This kind f sensing culd be useful fr persnalized telemedicine, allwing dctrs t remtely mnitr patients. "Yu dn't need t g t the dctr r d а vide call," Dagdeviren says. Thrugh this kind f data cllectin, I think dctrs can make better assessments and help their patients in а better way."
Last summer, several f the researchers spent time at а factry in Shenzhen, China, t experiment with mass-prducing the material used fr the garments. "Frm the utside it lks like a nrmal T-shirt, but frm the inside, yu can see the electrnic parts which are tuching yur skin," Dagdeviren says.
4.Why d MIT researchers make sensr-embedded suits?
5.What is the main functin f the electrnic sensrs?
6.What d the researchers expect f the suits in the future?
7.What can we infer abut wearing a sensr-embedded garment accrding t Dagdeviren?
On April 24th, plice in Califrnia annunced the arrest f Jseph DeAngel. He stands accused f eight cunts f murder. The starting-pint f the arrest was genetic material recvered frm the crime scenes. Thugh this directly matched n DNA held in a plice database, analysis f it led investigatrs all the way back t the 1800s, t his great-great-great grandparents. The trail they fllwed links him t crimes cmmitted arund Sacrament in the 1970s and 1980s by an unknwn man nicknamed the Glden State Killer.
That a link t distant ancestrs culd lead t an arrest prves the pwer f mdern genmics (基因组学).
Investigatrs first upladed Mr DeAngel’s genetic prfile ( 档 案 ) t a website called GEDmatch. This allws anyne t use his r her wn genetic prfile t search fr family cnnectins. GEDmatch’s database turned ut t hld prfiles, returned as weak matches, which lked as if they had cme frm distant cusins f the Glden State Killer. GEDmatch encurages upladers t include their real name with their genmes, and the investigatrs were able t trace back thrugh the matches’ parents and grandparents t find their mst recent cmmn ancestr. Then, having mved backward in time, they mved frward again, lking fr as many as pssible f this ancestr’s descendants. Using traditinal newspaper clippings, census (人口普查) recrds and genealgy websites, they discvered sme 25 family trees stretching dwn frm the cmmn ancestr. On its wn, the tree n which Mr DeAngel appears has 1,000 members.
Frm these thusands f descendants, the detectives fund tw suspects. One was eliminated (排除) frm the investigatin by further DNA tests f a family member. The ther, Mr DeAngel, was arrested after plice had tested the DNA n an item he had discarded.
If a serial killer really has been caught using these methds, everyne will rightly applaud. But it bears n the questin f genetic privacy—namely, hw much right peple have t keep their genes t themselves.
As the cst f genetic sequencing falls, the tendency f peple t discver their wn genetic infrmatin, rather than learning abut it secnd-hand, will increase. That, thugh, may bring abut a different prblem, in which peple btain the sequences f thers withut their permissin frm things like discarded cffee cups.
8.Why was Jseph DeAngel arrested?
9.Using GEDmatch, investigatrs fund that ________.
10.What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
11.What’s the best title f the passage?
We’ve all felt the tap t the sul yu get frm driving by yur ld high schl r hearing a tune yu nce danced t. But why is that feeling s universal?
Nstalgia, a cmbinatin f the Greek wrds nsts (hmecming) and algs (pain), was a special type f hmesickness assciated with sldiers fighting far-ff wars. Seventeenth century physicians wrried such thughts put health at risk. In the 19th century, dctrs believed it culd cause irregular heartbeat, fever, and death.
Our understanding f nstalgia has develped since then. “It’s a very mixed emtin,” says Frederick Barrett, a neurscientist. That makes it hard t fit int existing thery, which typically categrizes emtins as either psitive r negative. And triggers — the cars, music r smells — are extremely persnal. Therefre, designing a standardized study is difficult.
But we d knw nstalgia has a marked effect n us: brain imaging studies shw that thse experiences have their wn neural signature. Neurscientists argued that the emtin is c-prduced by the brain’s recall and reward systems. They fund that nstalgic images use the memry-managing hippcampus (海马区) mre than ther sights, as peple mine autbigraphical (个人经历的) details deep in the past. This mental effrt pays ff:as the hippcampus activates, s des ne f the brain’s reward centers.
That lnging fr the past might be a prtective mechanism, says Tim Wildschut, a prfessr. His wrk als suggests a mre primitive purpse fr the feeling: it develped t remind ur ancient ancestrs f pleasant physical feelings during perids f discmfrt and pain.
Recent research suggests the ccasinal lk backwards can give us a bst in unnticeable ways: by increasing self-respect and prtecting against depressin. Nstalgia’s apparent pwer t jump-start ne’s memry als seems t imprve recall ability in peple with Alzheimer’s disease.
New flavrs f “reminiscence therapy” (回忆疗法) are emerging arund the wrld. In 2018, the Gerge G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers pened its first Twn Square, an adult daycare facility designed t lk like a small twn in 1950s America. Thugh Twn Square has yet t publish peer-reviewed data n the success f the prgram, clients say it has helped senirs access dusty memries and recnnect with lved nes.
Scientists need a lt mre infrmatin t adequately characterize this cmplex and bittersweet feeling. But while centuries f dctrs cnsidered nstalgia a deadly disease, we nw knw: it can help us make it thrugh tday.
12.What can we learn abut nstalgia?
13.What is Paragraph 4 mainly abut?
14.Hw might nstalgia benefit peple?
15.Why des the authr mentin Twn Square?
