His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hspital. But his determinatin t walk was unshakable. At hme, when he was nt in bed, he had t stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself frm the chair and pulled himself acrss the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself alng the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he wuld be able t walk unaided. With his irn determinatin, he did develp the ability t stand up, then t walk n and ff, then t walk by himself and then t run.
He began t walk t schl, and then run t schl, t run fr the jy f running. Later in cllege he was n the track team.
In February 1934, in New Yrk City’s Madisn Square Garden, this yung man wh was nt expected t survive, wh wuld surely never walk, wh culd never hpe t run — this determined yung man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the wrld’s fastest mile.
A gd example f the pwer f psitive thinking and faith in ne’s self, Glenn Cunningham cntinues t be an inspiratin (鼓舞人心的人或事) fr many, and his stry, an bvius evidence t hw ne can regain his curage even when all difficulties are piled.

While Ellard Hunting and fellw researchers were ut studying the weather at a field statin in England, they nticed smething unexpected n their instruments. Thugh there was n strm appraching, the scientists’ electric field mnitrs recrded a strange increase in atmspheric electric charge (大气电荷).
Nearby, hneybees that lived in n-site hives were swarming (蜂拥) as they attempted t find a new hme. When the team tk a clser lk at their data, they discvered that the swarming hneybees had created an atmspheric electric charge. The researchers shared mre details abut their findings in the jurnal Science.
“This is the first reprt f bilgy as a surce f space charge.” says Hunting, a biphysicist at the University f Bristl in England. Scientists had knwn that individual bees carry a small charge while flying thrugh the air, caused by the frictin f their bdy parts against the air and each ther. It’s similar t hw rubbing a balln n a piece f clth creates static electricity. Scientists believe a bee’s charge helps pllen (花粉) stick t it and signals t ther bees which flwers have already been visited. But until nw, researchers had never recrded such a high vltage (电压) amng swarming hneybees.
In terms f electricity generatin, a bee swarm’s charge isn’t s impressive: It wuld take abut 50 billin bees t pwer an LED light. But cmpared t the charges prduced by cmmn weather events, the bees’ charge density was six times greater than an electrified dust strm and eight times greater than a thunderstrm clud.
Using the hneybee data, the researchers created a mdel t predict the ptential atmspheric electric charge f ther insects, including lcusts (蝗虫), mths and butterflies. “Lcusts swarm n biblical scales.” says Liam O’Reilly, a c-authr and bilgist at the University f Bristl. Cluds f these insects can expand up t 1,200 square kilmetres and cntain rughly 30 millin lcusts per square kilmeter. The researchers predict lcusts wuld have a much bigger influence n the atmsphere cmpared t hneybees.
Scientists hpe t cntinue explring hw bilgy influences physics and are curius t knw if smething similar is happening with ther wildlife, such as birds and bats.
32. What were the researchers ding when smething unexpected n their instruments happened?
A. Studying weather events.
B. Testing their instruments.
C. Recrding insects’ behavir.
D. Lking fr hneybees’ new hme.
33. What’s the functin f a bee’s charge?
A. T signal t ther bees.
B. T help the bee fly fast.
C. T find pllen mre easily.
D. T avid lsing their way.
34. What des the underlined wrd “biblical” in Paragraph 5 prbably mean?
A. Limited.B. Full.
C. Large.D. Slight.
35. What will the scientists cntinue t study next?
A. The wide applicatin f bilgy.
B. Measures t prtect birds and bats.
C. The influences f dust strms n wildlife.
D. Whether ther wildlife can prduce electric charge.
