Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if yu are 12 years ld. But Shanya Gill, a middle schler frm San Jse, Califrnia, wn the tp award in the Therm Fisher Scientific Junir Innvatrs Challenge fr designing a fire detectin system that is superir t existing nes, as stated in the press release.
“The tp winners have exhibited bundless curisity,” Maya Ajmera, president and CEO f Sciety fr Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research nt nly reflects their talent but als paves the way fr an exciting new future.”
Shanya’s inspiratin came after a fire destryed a restaurant in her neighbrhd during the summer f 2022, reprted The Washingtn Pst. “I had never really experienced smething like that befre,” she tld The Washingtn Pst abut the early mrning fire at Hlder’s Cuntry Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smke detectrs, but it still burned dwn,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent ver a year develping a fire detectin system that she believes culd have prevented the fire. Unlike traditinal smke detectrs that sense active fires frm the smke in the air, Shanya’s thermal(热的)imaging device is designed t stp fires frm ccurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny cmputer, the device can detect a heat surce when it has been left unattended fr ten minutes, and send a text message warning. Creating the prttype(原型)was difficult and the hardest part was the prgramming. “I had tw designs, and my first design cmpletely failed. It was a really big challenge I had t g thrugh,” she said. The final device utperfrms smke detectrs in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants t bring the csts dwn t make it even mre cmmn than hardwired smke detectrs.
“Shanya saw a prblem, went after it and tried t slve it, and that’s what we need t encurage all yung peple,” said Ajmera. She als highlighted the significance f supprting individuals, especially girls and kids f clr, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many yung peple drp ut f these areas.

Scientists have shwn hw plants can prtect themselves against genetic damage caused by envirnmental stress. The grwing tips f plant rts and shts have an in-built mechanism that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, aviding passing n faulty DNA.
Plants have small ppulatins f stem cells at the tips f their rts and shts, which en-able them t cntinuusly grw and prduce new tissues thrughut their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestrs fr plant tissues and rgans. Hwever, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will cntinue t exist and be passed n permanently thrughut the plant’s life, which culd last thusands f years.
Given the critical rle f stem cells and their expsure t ptentially dangerus envirnments at the grwing tips f rts and shts, safeguards are necessary t prevent stem cell faults frm becming fixed. Nick Fulcher and Rbert Sablwski, funded by the Bitechnlgy and Bilgical Sciences Research Cuncil, aimed t uncver these prtective mechanisms. Thrugh experiments invlving X-rays and chemicals, they discvered that stem cells were mre sensitive t DNA damage cmpared t ther cells.
When DNA damage ccurs, the cells have the capacity t detect it and cause prgrammed cells t die, preventing the prpagatin f the damaged genetic cde t the rest f the plant tissues. This prcess has similarities t the safeguard mechanism fund in animal cells, which has been bradly studied due t its relevance in preventing cancer.
The identificatin f a similar prtective system in plants is f great interest in the field f plant develpment. It als helps scientists develp plants that can better handle envirnmental stress. S knwledge f hw plants deal with the stress is f fundamental significance t agricultural science’s respnse t climate change.
    28. What is the functin f the in-built mechanism in plants?
    A. T prduce mre rts and shts.
    B. T increase the verall lifetime f the plant.
    C. T enhance plant grwth and nutrient intake.
    D. T replace dead cells and stp the spread f faulty DNA.
    29. Which f the fllwing is crrect abut stem cells in plants accrding t the text?
    A. They are relatively abundant in quantity.
    B. They are resistant t envirnmental stress.
    C. They make quick respnse t DNA damage.
    D. They have the ability t repair damaged DNA.
    30. What des the underlined wrd “prpagatin” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Spread. B. Change. C. Existence. D. Repair.
    31. What des the last paragraph fcus n?
    A. The way f dealing with climate change n the earth.
    B. The significance f identifying the prtective system in plants.
    C. The methd f ensuring plant survival under envirnmental stress.
    D. The urgency f develping plants that can handle envirnmental stress.

Raising livestck(牲畜)is a big part f the carbn emissin frm agriculture. But it is hard t change peple’s habits and get them t give up their hamburgers, especially since mre than ne-third f Americans eat fast fd every day. We previusly called fr carbn labels n everything frm buildings t burgers. Nw, a new study frm the Jhns Hpkins Blmberg Schl f Public Health fund that labels n fast fd affected peple’s chices.
The study said shifting current dietary patterns t mre sustainable diets with less red meat culd reduce fd-related greenhuse gas emissins by 55% and have health benefits.
The 5,000 participants in the study were shwn fake(假的)menus. One grup gt a menu with high climate impact labels n red meat items and the ther had a menu f lw climate impact labels n fish r plant-based burgers. Bth menus were effective in reducing the rders fr red meat. But interestingly, the high-impact labels were far mre effective, with 23% f the participants chsing a mre envirnmentally sustainable selectin, while the menu listing lw-impact chices encuraged nly 10% participants t change.
“We fund that labeling red meat items with high-climate impact labels was mre effective in increasing sustainable selectins than labeling nn-red meat items with lw-climate impact labels,” wrte the authrs f the study.
Lead authr, Julia Wlfs n, said, “These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy fr encuraging mre sustainable fd chices in a fast fd setting.”
The study pints ut negative labels might be unppular, “It is unlikely that the industry wuld vluntarily adpt a negative label apprach; such an apprach needs t be carried ut via law. Hwever, high climate impact labels may easily be adpted in settings like universities and hspitals.”
They have a pint that this label is aggressively negative, mre like a cigarette warning than a fd label. In the study, the authrs nte that future research shuld test mre label designs using qualitative and quantitative research n hw peple understand different climate impact labels.
    32. What is Paragraph 1 mainly abut?
    A. The impact f carbn emissin.
    B. The backgrund f the new study.
    C. The request f giving up carbn labels.
    D. The difficulty in changing peple’s habits.
    33. Hw did the participants in the study respnd t the menus?
    A. They liked the fd very much.
    B. They stuck t their preferences.
    C. Sme f them stpped eating fast fd.
    D. Sme f them changed their fd chices.
    34. What will happen if the negative label apprach is carried ut?
    A. It will be banned by law.
    B. It will face sme resistance.
    C. It will prduce bad results.
    D. It will be accepted by all industries.
    35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Raising Livestck Causes Carbn Emissin

Outside the cuple’s furth-flr apartment, a hmeless man was ften yelling n the street crner, smetimes keeping them awake at night. Petersn, 28, wuld pass the guy n his way t his jb, but they never spke. What culd they pssibly have in cmmn?
One day, Petersn was relaxing in his living rm, reading a bk, when his quiet was disturbed by the hmeless man. Inspired by the bk’s cmpassinate(有同情心的)message, Petersn made an unexpected decisin: He was ging t g utside and intrduce himself.
In that first cnversatin, Petersn learned the man’s name was Faris. He’d mved t Califrnia t pursue a career in music, but sn hard times fell n him and he ended up living n the street fr mre than a decade.

But his stry, the life inside f him, inspired me.” And even thugh Petersn, a graduate f the Cleveland Institute f Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in abut eight years, he fund himself asking if he culd paint Faris’s prtrait. Faris said yes.
Petersn’s cnnectin with Faris led him t frm Faces In the Cmmunity(FIC), a nnprfit rganizatin fcused n painting prtraits f members in the cmmunity wh are hmeless. Petersn sells the prtraits signatured by bth subject and artist fr a few thusand dllars, splitting the prceeds(收入)and putting half int what he calls a “lve accunt” fr his mdel.
