China's Peak Missin expeditin reached the summit f Munt Qmlangma, the wrld's highest peak at a height f 8,848.86 meters, n Tuesday and will cntinue t cllect snw and ice samples. The 11-member team set ff frm the expeditin's camp at an altitude f 8,300 meters fr the summit at 3:03 a.m. Beijing Time.
Fur f them first reached the wrld's highest autmatic weather statin at an altitude f 8,830 meters abve sea level, which was set up by China in last May.
Pwered by slar panels, the statin is designed t last fr tw years under harsh weather cnditins and is equipped with a satellite cmmunicatins system fr data transmissin every 12 minutes.
The technlgical upgrade wrk f the statin started at arund 11 a.m., and was cmpleted in rughly half an hur. Signals frm the autmatic weather statin have been well received by the base camp at an altitude f 5,200 meters.
Lunar pwer supply technlgy applied
Pwer supply fr instruments and equipment is always a challenge in this extreme high-altitude area. This time, the scientific research team cllabrated with the researchers respnsible fr the pwer supply system in China's lunar explratin prject, and successfully applied the technlgy n the mn t Munt Qmlangma, vercming the pwer supply bstacles when facing extremely lw temperatures, extremely lw pressure and instruments' self-starting pwer prtectin in an extremely high altitude area. Cmpared t last year when they had t cllect the samples by manually drilling, this time the members are pwered by electric tls, which saves energy and is als an innvatin in the scientific expeditin.
A slew f scientific research
Dubbed the "rf f the wrld" and "water twer f Asia," the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is an imprtant eclgical security barrier in China. It is als a natural labratry fr cnducting research n the evlutin f the Earth and life, the interactin amng spheres, and the relatinship between man and Earth.
Ya Tandng, cmmander f the Qmlangma expeditin, said the 2023 Qmlangma scientific expeditin will fcus n majr scientific issues such as hw the extremely high-altitude envirnment f the muntain changes under the influence f glbal warming, hw the envirnmental changes interact with the westerly winds and mnsns, and hw the envirnment in the area will affect the "water twer f Asia" in the future. The research team als carried ut a cmprehensive bservatin f the glacier n the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, hme t the wrld's largest glacier besides the Nrth and Suth Ples, and the surce f ver ten rivers in Asia as well.
At a height f abut 5,300 meters, where there is a lake frmed by the meltwater frm the Rngbuk Glacier, the researchers have bserved several indicatrs, including water temperature, pH, disslved xygen, turbidity, carbn dixide exchange rate at the water-air interface, etc.
Wu Guangjian, a researcher at the Institute f Tibetan Plateau Research under the Chinese Academy f Sciences, said the carbn dixide exchange rate is high, which suggests the carbn dixide exchange prcess is strng. "It is f great significance t understand hw the melting glacier affects the climate envirnment," Wu said. T acquire mre accurate data, the researchers have set up an additinal hydrgraphic survey ship n the meltwater f the Rngbuk Glacier t measure and map the flw and velcity f the river. The expeditin is part f the secnd cmprehensive scientific expeditin t the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau which was initiated in 2017.
A ttal f 179 researchers frm 13 teams have participated in it, targeting research n water, eclgy and human activities at the regin. It will be f great significance t study the impact f climate and envirnment change in the Qmlangma regin n the rest f the wrld.
