The Federal Trade Cmmissin (FTC) recently annunced that it was suggesting new measures t crack dwn n (严厉打击) fake (虚假的) reviews and ther practices used t mislead cnsumers. The cmmissin published a suggested rule that wuld prhibit cmpanies frm writing r selling fake reviews, buying psitive reviews, silencing negative reviews and mre.
“Our suggested rule n fake reviews shws that we’re using all pssible means t attack misleading advertising in the digital age,” Samuel Levine, directr f the FTC’s Bureau f Cnsumer Prtectin, said in a statement.
Research shws mst peple heavily rely n nline reviews, but humans are als bad at telling which cnsumer reviews hld water and which are nnsense.
That’s ptentially wrrisme given that nearly ne in every three reviews is fake, accrding t ne study.
In arguing fr the suggested rule, the FTC cited what actin it had taken against cmpanies that cntrlled reviews f their prducts.
In 2022, fr example, the cmmissin frced the nline retailer Fashin Nva, LLC t pay $4.2 millin t settle allegatins (指控) that it prevented negative reviews frm being psted n its website – the first FTC actin invlving a cmpany’s effrt t hide negative reviews. Fr its part, Fashin Nva said in a statement t The New Yrk Times that the FTC’s allegatins were “inaccurate” and that it nly settled the charges t avid “the distractin (分心) and legal fees”.
