It was June when I visited America’s mst famus pnd, Walden, in Massachusetts. It was still t early fr the summer crwds f beach gers and hlidaymakers. The nly peple besides phtgrapher Tim Laman and me were a few swimmers and a lne runner taking in the mrning fresh air. At the mment, Walden had the air f peace Henry David Threau s greatly prized.
Threau built his cabin here in 1845 as a place t write, and a river f thughts and wrds began t flw, cntinuing fr 17 years until his death. Mre than tw hundred years after his birth n July 12, 1817, his wrds still inspire: “I cme t the wds because I wish t understand the mst imprtant facts f life. I dn’t want t discver that I have nt lived when I die.”
I still have a T-shirt printed with ants and such wrds: “It is nt enugh t be busy. S are the ants. The questin is: What are we busy abut?”
What I have cme t lve mst abut Threau is that fr him the natural wrld speaks nt nly in grand settings like beautiful muntains and ancient frests, but als in rdinary places like pnds, parks and backyards.
“I cme t my wdland walk as the hmesick g hme,” wrte Threau in his jurnal. S it has been fr thse wh fllw in his philsphical ftsteps: We find urselves wedded t the wrld wherever we happen t be.
My place f slitude (独处) is a path in urban Auckland, New Zealand. I walk there in the same spirit that Threau walked his wdland trails, enjying a cnversatin with nature within earsht f a highway.
Fr Threau, such mments usually happened when he was alne. Fr this kind f walking, Threau preferred the wrd “awakening”: shaking ff scial and cultural burdens t enjy the wildness f the natural wrld. This was Threau’s cnclusin after his tw-year stay in the wds, and this was his cnclusin t Walden.

On the secnd flr f Minke van Wingerden’s flating farm in Rtterdam, the cws smetimes wander ver t a machine that autmatically milks them, r shy ut f the way f a rbt remving their waste that will be turned int rganic fertilizer fr the vegetables grwn n the first flr.
“We call ur farm recycling lady,” says Minke van Wingerden, wh has recently pened a small shp n dry land next t the flating farm t sell the vegetables, milk, cheese and butter prduced there.
Flating farming isn’t an entirely new idea. Effrts t put agriculture n r in the water are as ld as the Aztecs, wh built artificial islands t grw fd lng ag in what’s nw Mexic.
But it’s a cncept that is getting new attentin as a way f dealing with bth fd security and the challenges f climate change. And it desn’t have t be as well-equipped as Wingerden’s flating farm, which came abut after she witnessed the fd shrtages in New Yrk after Hurricane Sandy hit the city in 2012.
“When yu have flating farms, yu are climate adaptive,” said Wingerden. “It is als sensible fr yu t take fresher, healthier fd clse t cities.”
Daniel Petrvics, a researcher at the University f Amsterdam, said the success f flating farms will vary by regin.
“Cntributing t the sustainability f urban fd systems is a challenge flating farms have in cmmn with vertical (垂直的) farms. I dn’t think this prject is cst-effective enugh t be ppularized, either,” he said. “As a methd t adapt t climate change, it is much cheaper t invest in flating husing rather than flating farms since much f the wrld’s ppulatin lives in castal areas, while nly a small percentage f these cmmunities farm in areas that might be threatened by sea level rise caused by climate change.”
8. Why are the Aztecs mentined in the text?
A. T add sme backgrund infrmatin.B. T sum up the abve paragraphs.
C. T intrduce the tpic fr discussin.D. T prvide advice fr the farmers.

C. T cmpete with vertical farming.D. T find a lw-cst farming methd.
10. What did Daniel Petrvics say abut the vertical farms?
A. They are very likely t be widely adpted in cities.
B. They are a practical slutin t urban fd shrtage.
C. They are t cstly t be ppularized in the near future.
D. They can be helpful in the fight against climate change.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Are Flating Farms the Future?B. Are Organic Prducts Healthier?
C. Hw Can We Prduce Enugh Fd?D. What Are Flating Farms’ Advantages?
D
In ur daily life, it has never been easier t understand time: The Natinal Institute f Standards and Technlgy (NIST) bradcasts the time t pints acrss the cuntry and then it’s fed thrugh cmputer netwrks and cellphne twers t ur persnal devices. The time frm NIST keeps sciety rganized and increases ecnmic prductivity.
“Grwing up, a lt f us are fed with this cncept f abslute time,” says Chanda Prescd Weinstein, a theretical physicist at the University f New Hampshire. “But the time we’re experiencing is a scial cnstruct. Real time is smething quite different. In sme f the crners f the Universe, space and time can stretch and slw-and smetimes even break dwn cmpletely.”
Fr many peple, his idea f time is unbelievable. But true time is actually much mre flexible than mst peple realize. Accrding t Einstein’s general thery f relativity, space and time are tied tgether, and space-time can bend and curve (弯曲). As time stretches, it slws.
The best-knwn frce that stretches time is gravity. The mre gravity smebdy experiences, the slwer time passes fr them when cmpared t smene in a lwer gravitatinal field. In places where gravity is very strng, time as we understand can break dwn cmpletely. At the edge f black hles, fr example, the gargantuan gravitatinal pull slws time dramatically.
“Upn crssing the black hle’s pint f n return, knwn as its event-hrizn, yu end up in a regin where time breaks dwn entirely, ”Weinstein says. “At that pint time has n real meaning. There is n directin. There is n future. ”
The scientists at NIST are well aware f all the prblems with time. “Just as humans keep imprving their maps, we must imprve ur clcks. Better clcks can make GPS mre accurate, cmputer netwrks faster, and much, much mre,” says Jhn Kitching, ne f the NIST scientists. “But it’s pretty hard t define time in a satisfactry way.”
Kitching agrees with Weinstein that time as we experience it is a technlgy rather than a fundamental part f the Universe. “Frm a physics sense, it desn’t have that much value,” he cncludes.
12. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. The prblems with NIST time.B. The need t keep time accurate.
C. The challenges t define time.D. The strange features f real time.
13. What des the wrd “gargantuan” underlined in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Pwerful.B. Gentle.C. Straight.D. Careless.
14. What will happen t time at the event-hrizn?
A. It will be tied t space.B. It becmes ttally meaningless.
C. It just pints t the future.D. It usually slws dwn sharply.
15. Accrding t the text, the time frm NIST is ______.
A. based n the real timeB. f little value
C. a man-made measurementD. hard t understand
