    And s Oliver was left with nly the drunken nurse. He was then sent t a special “baby farm” nearby. There, he and thirty ther children rlled (翻滚) arund the flr all day, withut the incnvenience f t much fd r t much clthing. Mrs. Mann, wh “lked after” them, was very experienced. She knew what was gd fr children. She als knew what was gd fr herself. The bard (董事会) respnsible fr the rphans (孤儿) smetimes checked n the health f the children, but they always sent Mr. Bumble, a kind lcal pliceman, t annunce their visit the day befre. S whenever the bard arrived, f curse, the children were always neat and clean.

She screamed and cursed (诅咒) cntinuusly, but she knew where the diamnds were. And at last, we came t a deep hle in the grund. It had slping sides and was nt a natural hle. It was the wrk f miners.
    Huge statues guarded the mine. I remembered that King Slmn wrshipped (崇拜) sme strange gds.
    “Culd these be statues f thse gds?” I asked Sir Henry, wh knew much abut ancient histry.
    “It is pssible,” he said. “The Phenicians were great merchants and builders. They built King Slmn’s Temple. Perhaps they dug this mine fr him.
    “We want t g int the mine,” I tld Gagl.
    “It is the Place f Death,” she said, “but if yu want t enter, then I will lead the way.”
    The statues guarded a tunnel that led int the heart f the mine. Gagl led the way, and we fllwed. At first, the tunnel was dark. Then we saw a light at the end. When we reached the end f the passage (过道) , it pened int the mst amazing place. It was a huge cave—as big as a cathedral. There were carvings everywhere and giant stalactites.
    Gagl cntinued walking thrugh the cave until she came t anther tunnel. She stpped talking and turned.
    “This will take yu int the Place f Death,” she said. “Are yu sure yu want t cntinue?”

    There is nw a thick white fg ver the mr. “The fg is getting thicker,” says Hlmes. “This is very serius — Sir Henry must g hme sn.”
    Suddenly, we hear ftsteps. They get clser and we see Sir Henry walking twards us thrugh the fg. Then, we hear smething. A terrible animal appears. It is a huge black hund. There is fire cming frm its muth and its huge eyes are glwing.
    The hund runs after Sir Henry. Hlmes and I bth fire ur guns. We hit it but the hund desn’t stp. It jumps n Sir Henry and pushes him t the grund. Hlmes pints his gun and shts the hund five times. The giant hund is dead.
    Sir Henry is lying n the path. We run t him and find he is alive.
    I put my hand n the hund’s glwing face and find my wn fingers glw in the dark. “Phsphrus (含磷的),” I say.
    We walk twards Merripit Huse t search fr Stapletn. In the huse we dn’t find him, but we find Mrs. Stapletn tied up in a bedrm. We untie her. When she knws Sir Henry is alive and the hund is dead, she cries, “Thank Gd!” “Nw we have prf, we need Stapletn.” says Hlmes.

    That evening Hlmes again wre different clthes, and a large, black hat. But it was nt just the clthes that were different. He changed his face, his hair — everything.
    He was a different man.

Irene was in the middle f it, but Hlmes ran t help her. Then suddenly he fell t the grund, with bld running dwn his face. Irene hurried t her frnt dr, but she lked back. “Hw kind f him t help me! Is the pr man hurt?” she called.
    “He’s dead,” cried sme vices. “N, he’s nly hurt,” cried thers. “Bring him int the living rm,” she said.
    Sme peple carried Hlmes int the huse. I waited utside the windw and watched. I saw hw beautiful Irene was. Then Hlmes put up his hand, and I threw the smke-stick int the rm. At nce, the peple in the street and in the huse all began t shut “Fire!” very ludly.
    The huse was full f smke. I walked away, and ten minutes later Hlmes came t meet me.
    “Well dne, Watsn,” he said. “Have yu gt the pht?” I asked.
    “I knw where it is. She shwed me,” he answered. “But why did she shw yu?”
    “It’s easy,” he said, and laughed. “Yu saw all thse peple in the street? I paid them t help us. It wasn’t a real fight and the bld wasn’t real. When peple shut “Fire!”, a wman runs t the mst imprtant thing in her huse, her baby, her gld, r ... a pht. Irene ran t find her pht which is in a cupbard in the living rm. I saw it.     When they arrived at the camp, Rbin tld him t enjy himself. Then Rbin asked Little Jhn. “Did yu find a rich guest?” Little Jhn laughed. “Yes, I did.” and brught frward his guest and Rbin recgnized(认出) him at nce. It was “The Bishp f Herefrd!” Rbin said. “We meet again. Welcme t ur feast.” The bishp was furius(愤怒的), but he didn’t say anything. He was t afraid f Rbin.
    Just then Rbin saw there was a bx tightly held in his hands.
