    Reading cmprehensin
    Part three
    Read and think
Yu are ging t read a text adapted frm the shrt stry “A Descent int the Maelstrm”. Read the fact file n the right. Answer the questins.
1 What is a “Mske-strm”?2 Wh wrte the stry?3 What d yu think will happen in the stry?
Befre reading the text, let’s predict the questins.
1 Wh are the main characters in the stry?2 Wh is telling the stry?3 When and where did the stry happen?4 What effect did the terrible experience have n the stryteller?
Abut three years ag, smething terrible happened t me. That was the day when ittk nly six hurs t break my bdy and sul. Yu think I am a very ld man一but Iam nt. It tk less than a single day t change my hair frm black t white. One day, my tw brthers and I were cming back frm the islands where we ftenrisked ging and gt mre fish than thers. All at nce, the sky was cvered with darkcluds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible strm. A huge wave cvered urbat and my yunger brther fell int the sea. My elder brther put his muth clse tmy ear and cried ut "Mske-strm!" The mment I heard the wrd I became veryfrightened. I knew what he meant by that ne wrd well enugh. With the wind and waves, we were ging in the directin f the whirlpl. We werehpeless. Nthing culd save us. I felt sick, as if I was flling frm a muntain tp in adream. We went rund and rund, nearer and nearer t the hrrible edge f thewhirlpl. It may appear strange, but at that mment, when we were n the edge fthe whirlpl, I felt calmer than when we were mving twards it. I began t think hwamazing a thing it was t die in such a way, and hw wnderful it was t see the pwerf nature. Suddenly, we went ver the edge. I thught my life was ver. But mmentafter mment passed, and I was still safe.
The bat was n the inside f the huge whirlpl and we were ging rund in circles atgreat speed. I saw clearly that there were ther bjects in the whirlpl- trees andbarrels. After a while, I became curius abut the whirlpl itself. I then made threeimprtant bservatins. The first, the larger the bdies were, the mre rapidly theyfell; the secnd, between tw bjects f equal extent, rund bjects fell dwn lessrapidly; and the third, between tw bjects f the same size, bjects shaped like a tubefell dwn mre slwly. S I tied myself t a barrel t help me flat. I tried t make mybrther understand, but he was t frightened and stayed in the heavy bat. Withutwaiting, I jumped int the sea t try and escape. As yu can see, the reasn why I'm here t tell the stry is that I made the rightdecisin. Sme time after I left the bat, with my brther in it, it was pulled int thebttm f the whirlpl. Sn after that, the whirlpl became less wild. Then the skywas clear, the wind calmer, and the mn was shining. I was still tied t the barrel andthe waves sn carried me t an area where the ther fishermen were. In the end, abat picked me up. I was very tired. The fishermen were my ld friends, but they wereunable t recgnise me. When I tld them my stry, they did nt believe it. Nw I havetld yu, and I cannt expect yu t believe me any mre than the fishermen did.
    Let’s check the answer.
