My plan t learn t play the cell was a healthy chice. S I tk the next inncent step f ging t a shp that sells and rents string instruments, especially vilins, vilas, and cells. The place was a hle-in-the-wall, up a steep flight f stairs. Instruments left a narrw path t the cunter where a wman with grey hair and warm eyes greeted me. Since I culdn’t frm a questin abut what I wanted, I just std there explring the scene, which felt immensely pleasurable.
I rented a cell, a bw, and a case t hld them. What attracted me t the cell was its enrmus size and its sft, smth, and memrable sunds. It’s an instrument made f beautifully plished wd that I culd wrap my arms arund and feel its pwerful vibratins when the strings were played. That was a gd starting pint fr me. The nly prblem was that I didn’t knw hw t play it.
There’s a ppular belief that the cell is a particularly difficult instrument t learn. Anther is the admnitin, “Dn’t bther if yu are a beginner ver age 10!” Well, I was 70, and what thers thught n lnger influenced me. And besides, I thught f the wrds f Dr. Chen, wh suggested that learning causes physical changes in the brain.
S I fund a teacher wh had respect fr lder adult beginners and I practiced diligently, daily fr years, and smetimes disheartened, but I kept up. I’m happy t reprt that nw, mre than a decade later, I can hld my wn in a string tri and tw quartets (tw vilins, a vila, and me, the female cell) and even a senir cmmunity band. Of curse, I’ll never sund like Y-Y Ma but yu culd recgnize a Mzart piece if yu heard me play it. And, mre imprtantly, I dn’t need t please anyne but myself.
Whether it’s a pleasurable pastime r a new career, the starting pint is the same: wnder, curisity, determinatin, and the desire t keep yur brain sharp.

    A. Amused by the shp assistant.
    B. Anxius fr a live perfrmance.

    C
Tw and a half millennia ag, Scrates cmplained that writing wuld harm students. With a way t stre ideas permanently and externally, they wuld n lnger need t memrize. Hwever, studies tday have fund that writing n paper can imprve everything frm recalling a randm series f wrds t better understanding cmplex cncepts.
Fr learning material by repetitin, the benefits f using a pen r pencil lie in hw the mtr and sensry memry f putting wrds n paper reinfrces that material. The scribbling (涂鸦) n a page feeds int visual memry: peple might remember a wrd they wrte dwn in French class as being at the bttm-left n a page.
One f the best-demnstrated advantages f writing by hand seems t be in nte-taking. Students typing n cmputers wrte dwn almst twice as many wrds directly frm lectures, suggesting they were nt understanding s much as rapidly cpying the material. Hwever, handwriting frces nte-takers t prcess and rganize ideas int their wn wrds. This aids cnceptual understanding at the mment f writing, resulting in better perfrmance n tests.
Many studies have cnfirmed handwriting’s benefits, and plicymakers have taken nte. Thugh America’s curriculum frm 2010 des nt require handwriting instructin past first grade (rughly age six), abut half the states since then have required mre teaching f it. In Sweden there is a push fr mre handwriting and printed bks and fewer devices. England’s natinal curriculum already includes the teaching f basic cursive writing (连写体) skills by age seven.
Hwever, several schl systems in America have gne s far as t ban mst laptps. This is t extreme. Sme students have disabilities that make handwriting especially hard. Nearly all will eventually need typing skills. Virginia Berninger, prfessr f psychlgy at the University f Washingtn, is a lngtime advcate f handwriting. But she is nt a purist; she says there are research tested benefits fr “manuscript” print-style writing but als fr typing.
Scrates may r may nt have had a pint abut the dwnsides f writing. But n ne wuld remember, much less care, if his student Plat had nt nted it dwn fr the benefit f future generatins.
    28. Accrding t the text, why des writing n paper have benefits fr learning?
    A. It prvides visual enjyment in class.
    B. It imprves the effect f memrizatin.
    C. It prmtes the mtr and sensry ability.
    D. It helps t remember the infrmatin frever.

    A. Difficulties faced by the disabled.
    B. Unreasnableness f frbidding typing.
    C. The research-tested benefits f typing.
    D. The lngtime advcacy fr handwriting.
    31. Why des the writer mentin Scrates and Plat in the last paragraph?
    A. T thank Plat fr his effrts.
    B. T defend Scrates’ pint f view.
    C. T shw peple’s indifference t typing.
    D. T cnfirm the imprtance f handwriting.
    D
Nwadays, peple are increasingly interacting with thers in scial media envirnments where algrithms (算法) cntrl the flw f scial infrmatin they see. Peple’s interactins with nline algrithms may affect hw they learn frm thers, with negative cnsequences including scial misperceptins, cnflict and the spread f misinfrmatin.
On scial media platfrms, algrithms are mainly designed t amplify (放大) infrmatin that sustains engagement, meaning they keep peple clicking n cntent and cming back t the platfrms. There is evidence suggesting that a side effect f this design is that algrithms amplify infrmatin peple are strngly biased (偏向的) t learn frm. We call this infrmatin “PRIME”, fr prestigius, in-grup, mral and emtinal infrmatin.
In ur evlutinary past, biases t learn frm PRIME infrmatin were very advantageus: Learning frm prestigius individuals is efficient because these peple are successful and their behavir can be cpied. Paying attentin t peple wh vilate mral nrms is imprtant because punishing them helps the cmmunity maintain cperatin. But what happens when PRIME infrmatin becmes amplified by algrithms and sme peple explit algrithm amplificatin t prmte themselves? Prestige becmes a pr signal f success because peple can fake prestige n scial media. News becme filled with negative and mral infrmatin s that there is cnflict rather than cperatin.
The interactin f human psychlgy and algrithm amplificatin leads t disfunctin because scial learning supprts cperatin and prblem-slving, but scial media algrithms are designed t increase engagement. We call it functinal mismatch. One f the key utcmes f functinal mismatch is that peple start t frm incrrect perceptins f their scial wrld, which ften ccurs in the field f plitics. Recent research suggests that when algrithms selectively amplify mre extreme plitical views, peple begin t think that their plitical in-grup and ut-grup are mre sharply divided than they really are. Such “false plarizatin” might be an imprtant surce f greater plitical cnflict.
S what’s next? A key questin is what can be dne t make algrithms facilitate accurate human scial learning rather than explit scial learning biases. Sme research team is wrking n new algrithm designs that increase engagement while als punishing PRIME infrmatin. This may maintain user activity that scial media platfrms seek, but als make peple’s scial perceptins mre accurate.
    32. What are scial media algrithms targeted at?
    A. Imprving scial envirnment.B. Generating PRIME infrmatin.
    C. Aviding side effects f scial media.D. Raising the media platfrm click rate.
    33. Why des the authr refer t “false plarizatin” in paragraph 4?
    A. T make an assumptin.B. T illustrate a cnclusin.
    C. T explain a plitical issue.D. T present an extreme case.
    34. Accrding t the authr, algrithms will be imprved s as t ________.
    A. bst engagement and regulate amplificatin
    B. strengthen scial learning and delete biases
    C. identify biases and punish PRIME infrmatin
    D. mnitr media platfrms and guarantee users’ privacy
    35. What is the best title f the text?
    A. PRIME infrmatin meets with misperceptins
    B. Algrithms cntrl the flw f scial infrmatin
    C. Scial media algrithms twist human scial learning
    D. Online algrithm designs face unexpected challenges
