When 12 girls frm San Fernand high schl in Califrnia received a grant (助学金) t develp an inventin t slve a real-wrld prblem, they decided t create a slar-pwered shelter. Nw fr ver a year, the girls have been wrking after schl and ver the winter and spring breaks t cmplete their prject. “They have this amazing drive that I've never seen befre, ” said Vilet Mardirsian, a math teacher at San Fernand High. “I thught at the beginning that maybe sme f them wuld give up, saying 'I didn't expect this much wrk,' but they dn't. They're just wrking hard and they're nt giving up.”
Living in a lw-incme cmmunity (社区), the girls have seen the prblem f hmelessness first-hand, which is why they chse that ppulatin t create a prduct fr. Many f them are als frm immigrant families and hpe the slar-pwered shelter might help refugees(难民). Seventeen-year-ld Maggie Mejia said that while she had n engineering experience, the girls figured ut as a team hw t create the prttype (雏形), using hw-t vides and bks that taught them hw t cde. But the mst imprtant lessn she's learned ver the curse f the prject isn't technical. “I've learned a lt abut helping thers, helping the cmmunity and shwing a better wrld t ther peple,” she said.
The girls have been invited t MIT t shw their inventin. Mardirsian says all the participating students have expressed interest in ging int STEM (science, technlgy, engineering, mathematics) fields and that students frm lwer grades are already expressing interest in being invlved next year. Thrugh a prcess called the "bathrm inspiratin prject," teachers and administratrs at Warren Middle Schl, spent their summer beautifying the schl's restrms by painting mtivatinal murals (壁画) n each f the stalls (小隔间).Frming messages like "Yur mistakes dn't define yu" and "Scatter (撒播) kindness," the brightly clred wrds are exactly what a yung student needs t see when having a rugh day-r any schl day fr that matter. And nw that classes are fficially in sessin, peple are already nticing a psitive impact.
Since psting phts f upgrades t the schl in July, Principal Jshua Garcia says that the alteratins have arused a great respnse.
"Students have been talking abut the murals frm the mment the pictures had been psted. Sme even tk the time t find a reasn t cme up t the campus t see the murals," he says."I think what makes this small little actin s valuable is that it has set the tne fr ur campus."
And nt nly is that imprtant t students, parents, and fellw staff, but it is als vital fr the schl's new principal, wh is trying t gain the trust f the cmmunity during a time in which trust is s necessary fr schls.
"Being new t the campus, I think the parents were able t see hw much I value their children and have their best interest at heart,” Garcia cntinues. “I have had many parents tell me hw they can just feel a difference in the campus climate and hw much they are enjying seeing their children wanting t cme here. These murals have put trust back in the campus and its teachers, and by ding s we are able t build a culture in which ur students want t be here and learn.”
