Inside them are pisned pellets (有毒饲料) which are drpped and spread acrss the island. Fr any rabbits that survived the baiting (诱饵) , there’s a plan B. This special team f dgs is being put thrugh a final training. It’ll be their jb t track dwn any remaining rabbits. They have t als learn t behave arund the island’s native wildlife. Why d we talk the way we d? It might date back t when ur ancestrs left the jungle fr the pen plain. Between 5.3 millin and 16 millin years ag, Africa's landscapes changed frm thick, leafy frests t wide-pen grasslands. This envirnmental change pushed ur ancestrs ut f the trees and nt the grund. Alng with all f the physical and behaviral changes this may have caused, researchers als believe it may have changed the way we speak.
“Open landscapes prvide us with fewer bjects t affect signal cmmunicatin, meaning ur vices can travel further cmpared with that in thick frests,” Charltte Gannn, a researcher wh studies language develpment, tld Newsweek. “The mve t these pen spaces may have increased the effectiveness f ur cmmunicatin.”
By cmparing the vcal calls f the rangutan (大猩猩) , Gannn and her team were able t establish
hw different calls culd travel acrss different landscapes. In their study, the team played 487 calls frm rangutans and measured their audibility (可听度) at set length ver an verall distance f ver 1,300 feet in the Suth African plain.
“Our results were surprising,” Gannn said, “The rule f sund spread suggests that lwer-frequency ( 低频率) sunds (the grumphs) wuld have traveled further than higher-frequency sunds (the kiss squeaks). Our results actually fund the ppsite t this.” In these envirnmental settings, cnsnant (辅音)
-like calls traveled a lt further than vwel ( 元 音 ) -like calls. Actually, arund 80 percent f cnsnant-based calls were audible at 1,300 feet, cmpared t nly 20 percent f vwel-based calls.
Gannn said these results highlight the imprtance f studying living rangutan t learn abut ur species’ histry. “We can view them as time machines that allw us t recreate key mments f ur histry s we can learn mre abut the develpment f ur language,” Gannn said. “Despite their ppularity in mdern languages, cnsnants have ften been frgtten when discussing speech develpment. Our research highlights nt nly their presence in ancient times but their imprtance t the develpment f language.”
What led t the speech develpment?
Behaviral change.B. Time develpment.
C. Physical develpment.D. Envirnmental change.
What makes cmmunicatin happening 10 millin years ag mre effective?
Less blck.B. Better tls.C. Luder vice. D. Larger vcabulary.
What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
The results f the study.B. The prcess f the research.
C. The purpse f the prgram.D. The participants f the prject.
What can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs?
The living rangutan can recreate ur language.
Cnsnants are significant in language develpment.
The sund f grumphs travels further than that f kiss squeaks.
Cnsnant-like calls travel fur times further than vwel-like calls.

Yurs, Li Hua
My tw-year-ld daughter and I ften get smiles frm strangers as we walk thrugh ur twn with Clara riding in her backpack, singing and swinging her feet.
I felt extra grateful fr my sunny little girl n ne walk at the end f April, 2006. Just three days befre she wke up frm her nap ( 小睡) with a fever. We spent a tugh evening in the emergency rm. Any parent r child is frightened by such an experience. S it was a great feeling that Clara was s happy that day.
We were heading hme frm a lcal grcery stre, which wisely gives ut free ballns t children. Clara always lks frward t getting a balln there. She did an especially nice jb — waiting patiently in the lng queue at the stre. Luckily, her patience was rewarded with a pink balln. Pink means a lt t her, especially these days, since the medicine she is taking fr the high fever is bubble-gum pink.
Clara was s happy that she started singing “Mister Glden Sun” t her balln. But when we walked under a tree, POP! There went the balln. Clara immediately burst int tears. “My pink balln ppped!” She has had many ballns befre, but is always very careful with them. This was the first time that she had had such an upsetting experience. Heart-brken, she stared at her pr shrt-life luck, ut f cntrl.
A cllege-aged yung man, abut 21, with light brwn hair, wh was walking behind us nticed Clara’s tears. He was clearly preparing fr an imprtant date, as he was carrying a buquet (束) f a dzen pink rses. He quickened his pace and asked Clara what had happened. Unfrtunately, Clara was t shy and upset t answer, but I briefly described the situatin, deeply tuched that a yung guy, prbably hurrying hme t get ready fr a date, wuld stp t cmfrt a little child.
