Then he climbed nt the railing. Taking a deep breath, he let g f the railing and jumped. The cld water surrunded him, but he managed t steady himself and began swimming twards the girl. As he gt clser, he culd see her face mre clearly. She was crying, but her eyes were wide pen, lking at him in fear and hpe. Bauer reached ut and gently tk hld f her. When they brke thrugh the surface, Bauer culd hear shuts and cheers frm abve.
Finally he reached the shre with the little girl in his arms. As they were lifted ut f the water, the truck driver finally came t himself. Bauer lked dwn at the girl. She was still crying, but her grip n him had lsened. She lked at him with wide, grateful eyes. “It’s kay, sweetie,” Bauer said, trying t cmfrt her. “Yu’re safe nw.” And as he lked int her eyes, he knew that this mment, this rescue, wuld stay with him frever. It was a reminder f the pwer f lve and curage, and the imprtance f being there fr each ther in times f crisis.
    Anther pssible versin
Then he climbed nt the railing. He was abut t jump int the water when the truck driver suddenly came t himself and rushed t the railing. He lked at Bauer with fear in his eyes. “Let me g!” Bauer shuted. “Stay here with Ava!” The truck driver hesitated fr a mment, then ndded. Bauer tk a deep breath and jumped int the water. Thank Gdness! He was unhurt! He swam twards the little girl, picked her up, and began t swim twards the shre.
Finally he reached the shre with the little girl in his arms. He watched as the little girl was taken away and given t the truck driver and Ava. They were bth smiling, their eyes full f gratitude and admiratin. Back in the car, Ava hugged him tightly, tears welling up in her eyes. “Dad, I was s scared,” she said. “I knw, baby,” Bauer said tenderly. “But it’s ver nw, and yu’re bth safe.” They drve hme in silence, but Bauer knew that he was nt just a skilled prfessinal, but als a curageus and respnsible father.

    Text 1
M: I ften tell peple t eat healthy breakfast, but I understand nt everyne likes t eat a lt. Sme peple, like yu, chse t eat a small amunt f fruit. (1)
W: Dctrs always suggest I eat sme meat and mre vegetables, but I never did.
    Text 2
    M: It’s 9:10 a.m. The train shuld have been here 10 minutes ag. (2) What’s ging n?
W: It was the same yesterday. I think they are repairing the line.
M: They shuldn’t be ding it in the mrning when peple are trying t get t wrk.
    Text 3
M: Thanks s much, Mrs. Vardy. Dinner was delicius.
W: Please, call me Delia. We’ll be family sn!
M: OK… Delia! My parents wuld lve t meet yu and Mr. Vardy befre the wedding. (3) They wanted t ask yu bth, with Laura f curse, fr Sunday lunch next week.
    Text 4
W: Yu have t buy a gd quality bed after yu turn 40. It makes a huge difference fr yur lng-term health.
M: Yeah, I’m lking fr smething quite sft tday. I’m nt int hard beds like thse in htels. (4)
    Text 5
W: Is that yur car? What happened t yur truck?
M: Oh, I still use it fr wrk. I just wanted t get ne electric car t cut dwn n pllutin and petrl usage. (5)
W: Brilliant! I’ll buy an electric car nce my van(货车) becmes t ld.
    Text 6
W: Abut thse signs here saying “mind the gap”, what des that mean? (6)
M: Thse signs are all arund the Lndn metr system, r as we call it, the tube. It means be careful when stepping n the metr frm the platfrm. (6)
W: Oh, I see. I still dn’t understand much abut this city.
M: Dn’t wrry, yu’ll get used t it! After spending a few years here during university, yu’ll feel at hme. (7)
W: Maybe. I’m used t hearing peple speak English in mvies r n TV, but I can barely understand the way lcal Lndners speak.
M: By next year yu’ll be talking in their accent — just wait! (7)
    Text 7 (第8题为总结题)
W: I was never a sprts fan. I just dn’t understand the passin peple have. Everyne in a city cheers fr a team, and the players n the team are nt even frm that city. Next year, thse players will prbably be n anther team.
M: I think many peple wh dn’t like sprts have never played sprts themselves. (9) Fr example, if yu have played sccer, yu can better appreciate the skills and mves f the players n the field.
W: That des make sme sense. Fr example, I never liked drinking wine until I learned hw it is made. (10) Then, I began understanding where the small differences in taste and smell cme frm. Befre that, I thught peple were just wasting mney. (10)
M: Persnal experience can really change yur pinin f smething.
    Text 8
W: I’ve always hated English literature lectures because they’re s bring, (11) even thugh I’m nt taking the class nw.
M: I did t. The subject has always been s difficult fr me. But this year, I tk a class n Shakespeare. Did yu knw that dzens f phrases we use every day cme frm him, and we dn’t even knw it?
W: I’ve heard f that. “By the skin f yur teeth”, fr example — just barely getting ut f a bad situatin.
M: Actually, that ne is nt frm Shakespeare. “Clthes make the man”, “What’s dne is dne”, “melt int thin air” — these all cme frm Shakespeare. The nly prblem is, while literature is interesting, it’s nt very useful in ur careers, unlike ecnmics r math. By the way, d yu take math curse? (12)
W: Yes, (12) I think it is interesting. But what yu said just nw is nt exactly true. All these phrases can help break the ice when we’re meeting new peple. Being gd at cnversatin is ne f the mst imprtant career skills, n matter what yur jb is. (13)
M: “Break the ice”. That’s anther phrase frm Shakespeare.
    ★ By the skin f yur teeth(侥幸成功;勉强做成), 由于牙齿(teeth)没有皮肤(skin),所以“the skin f yur teeth”指最小的可能的程度。
    Text 9
W: Gd mrning. I’m calling abut the jb that was in the paper last night. (14)
M: Well, culd yu please tell me yur name?

W: Well, I thught it was just right fr me.
M: Really? Um… Culd yu tell me a little abut yurself?
    W: Yes. I’m 23. I’ve been wrking abrad.
M: Where exactly have yu been wrking?
    W: In Geneva.
M: Oh, Geneva. And what were yu ding there? (15)
W: Secretarial wrk. (15) Prir t that, I was at university in the UK.
    M: At which university?
W: The University f Manchester. I have a degree in English.
M: Yu said yu’ve been wrking in Geneva. D yu have any special reasn fr hping t cme back? (16)
W: I thught it wuld be nice t be near my family. (16)
M: I see, and hw d yu see yurself develping in this jb?
W: Well, I’m ambitius. I d hpe that my career as a secretary will eventually lead me int management.

    Text 10
Phtgraphy is the art f capturing(拍摄) mments, understanding light cnditins, and telling creative stries. But I’d say it’s als ne f the easiest and mst rewarding art frms. At this exhibitin, we’ll first shw yu the rts f phtgraphy technlgy. S, please, everyne — fllw me. (17) Alng with the wrld’s leading phtgraphy museums in Chicag, USA and Lianzhu, China, this museum here in the Netherlands features ne f the mst extensive histrical phtgraphy cllectins. (17) (18) In the year 1021, a mdel f the first-ever camera was created. Althugh it culdn’t capture phtgraphs, its mirrr imaging was the basis f camera technlgy. Six hundred years later, these camera rms were researched and made smaller. But it wasn’t until 1826 that film paper was used t create the wrld’s first pht. Only 60 years later, film cameras went frm being the size f a car t just a handheld bx, as Kdak launched the first cmmercial camera. (19) Film phtgraphy then became essential t capturing histry and telling humanity’s stries. In 1991, the first cmmercial digital camera was made. And then, in 2000, tiny cameras were first put n cell phnes. Anyway, I knw we have sme yung phtgraphers visiting tday, s let’s lk thrugh this exhibitin’s camera cllectin, and I’ll let yu all try them ut! (17) (20)
