    While using radiactive material sunds like a radical measure (激进措施), it is trying t deal with an extremely serius prblem. Pachers have killed tw-thirds f Suth Africa’s rhins ver the past years. In 2014 alne, 1,215 Suth African rhins were killed by pachers. Millins f dllars are spent each year n prtecting the animals, with limited success: last year 394 deaths were recrded. Rhin hrns are highly ppular in sme illegal (非法的) markets, selling fr up t $100,000 a kilgram.
    The big questin nw is whether r nt the rhins will suffer any pain r experience harmful side effects as a result f injecting such material int their hrns. “This is what scientists are trying t wrk ut with a lt f testing,” said Dr Mitzi Klein, the Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technlgy Organisatin’s (ANSTO) scientist. “The mst imprtant thing is t prtect the rhin and the envirnment arund them, and nt hurt the rhin ne bit.”
    Dr Guy Castley frm Griffith University said that any injectin int the hrn itself wn’t hurt because the hrn is made up f a material called keratin, which is the same as human nails and hair. “The hrn itself des nt have any nerves r bld vessels (神经或血管) inside it. S it’s nt likely t cause the rhin any discmfrt r pain,” he said.
    Dr Castley stressed that it’s t early t say if radiactive material will be used and Dr Klein agreed that radiatin wn’t cme near any rhin until they discver a way t put the radiatin safely in the hrn “... s that it des nt spread t the bdy r hurt anything in the envirnment.”
    “We need t prtect rhins, because we’re in danger f lsing them frever.
