While a great deal is thrwn away, a large prprtin f plastics waste can be cllected and sent t be ____19____ recycled. This invlves washing, drying and grinding the material, then heating and ___20___ it int a new prduct. But at n stage is the chemical structure f the plastic changed. In rder t reduce pllutin, the plastics manufacturing sectr needs technlgical innvatin.

Adjusting t a new sleep schedule at the start f the schl year can lead t disturbed rest, daytime tiredness and changes in md and fcus fr teens. Althugh they need eight t ten hurs f sleep per night t maintain physical health, emtinal well-being and schl perfrmance, accrding t the Natinal Sleep Fundatin, mst adlescents get less than eight.
Newly published research frm RUSH in the jurnal SLEEP reveals hw adlescents can get mre shut-eye. “There are a lt f changes a teen ges thrugh,” said Stephanie J. Crwley, PhD. “One specifically is a change t sleep bilgy that happens during adlescence.” Crwley said, “there are tw cmpeting frces: ne t g t bed earlier fr the schl schedule and the ther a bilgical change that happens naturally t a teen’s bdy.” Because f this cmplex cnflict, RUSH researchers set ut t test a tw-week interventin that targets the circadian(昼夜节律的) system with different behaviral measures and tries t help the teens figure ut a better nighttime rutine.
T slve teen sleep shrtage, the researchers used bright light therapy n tw weekend mrnings fr a ttal f 2.5 hurs. The bright light helps the internal clck t wake up a little earlier. This shift shuld make it easier fr the teens t fall asleep at an apprpriate time. Crwley and her team then helped them make up fr sleep prblems by prviding time management tls and addressing barriers t an earlier bedtime, like limiting certain after-schl activities.
Researchers were able t shift the teens’ bedtime by an hur and a half earlier, and their ttal sleep time increased by apprximately an hur. “The interesting thing is that teens with late circadian clcks shifted by up t tw hurs earlier,” Crwley said. “And the teens wh had an earlier circadian clck didn’t need t be shifted any earlier. They just needed the behaviral supprt f trying t manage their time in the evening and increase their sleep duratin.” The researchers als fund the teens in the interventin grup were less tired, and less angry, and they exhibited better cncentratin. The students’ mrning attentin imprved as well.

Wildlife ppulatins arund the wrld are facing dramatic declines, accrding t new figures that have led envirnmental campaigners t call fr urgent actin t rescue the natural wrld. The 2022 Living Planet Index (LPI), prduced by the Zlgical Sciety f Lndn (ZSL), reveals that studied ppulatins f mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline f 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previus predictins. The LPI tracked glbal bidiversity between 1970 and 2018, based n the mnitring f 31,821 ppulatins f 5230 vertebrate (脊椎动物) species. Mark Wright f WWF says the degree f decline is destructive and cntinues t wrsen. “We are nt seeing any really psitive signs that we are beginning t bend the curve f nature,” he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been amng the hardest-hit ppulatins, with mnitred ppulatins shwing an average decline f 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazn pink river dlphin, fr example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its ppulatin between 1994 and 2016. Meanwhile, sme f the mst bidiverse regins f the wrld are seeing the steepest falls in wildlife, with the Caribbean and central and suth America seeing average wildlife ppulatin declined by 94 per cent since 1970. Habitat lss and reductin is the largest driver f wildlife lss in all regins arund the wrld, fllwed by species verexplitatin by hunting, fishing r paching (偷猎).

He says it is vital that gvernments use the summit t agree n “meaningful, well measurable targets and gals”. “We need gvernments t take actin t ensure that thse gals deal with the cmplicated cmbined threats f climate change and bidiversity, in rder fr us t see a meaningful actin,” says Freeman. But sme researchers are critical f the LPI’s use f a headline figure f decline, warning it is easy t be misunderstd.
The findings dn’t mean all species r ppulatins wrldwide are in decline. In fact, apprximately half the ppulatins shw a stable r increasing trend, and half shw a declining trend. “I think a mre apprpriate and useful way t lk at it is t fcus n specific species r ppulatins,” says Hannah Ritchie at Our Wrld in Data. But Wright says the LPI is a useful tl that reflects the findings f ther bidiversity indicatrs. “All f thse shw they all scream there is smething ging really very badly wrng,” says Wright.

Graduates Turn t Teaching
China has witnessed a 66-fld increase in the number f applicants fr teaching qualificatin tests ver the past decade, and experts say the ppularity has mainly been driven by mre graduates chasing stable jbs. Accrding t the latest figures frm the Ministry f Educatin, the number f applicants fr teaching exams each year has grwn frm 172,000 t 11.44 millin in the past decade.
Experts said the sharp increase crrespnds with the increase in teachers’ salaries and status within sciety, and it is expected t bring abut an verall imprvement in quality teaching. Hwever, anther big reasn fr the enthusiasm fr teaching psts is that the challenging and cmplicated emplyment situatin is driving graduates tward stable jbs such as wrking as teachers and gvernment fficials.
Chu Zhahui, a senir researcher at the Natinal Institute f Educatin Sciences, said the ppularity f teaching psts is clsely assciated with peple’s changing perceptin f the ecnmic situatin, jb stability and security, which are majr cncerns fr graduates.
In view f the crnavirus epidemic in recent years, many cllege graduates just want a stable jb, s teaching suddenly becmes a very ppular prfessin, and many students frm well-knwn universities have jined the cmpetitin. Of curse, everyne has their wn ideas. Take Wang Lin fr example. Wang Lin, wh graduated frm a famus university, said she had wanted t be a histry teacher since middle schl, inspired by her wn histry teacher. She added she had a gd impressin f her teachers frm an early age and was grateful t thse wh had taught her. In fact, there are many such cases.
While passing the teaching qualificatin test is the first step t becming a teacher in China, landing a pst at schls in big cities can be very cmpetitive.
