Last year I lived in Chile fr half a year as an exchange student with the American Field Service. Cmpared t mst visitrs, I didn’t travel much. I lived with a Chilean family and had the respnsibilities f any Chilean teenager. I went t schl every day, in unifrm. I had gd days and bad days and days that I didn’t understand.
Chuquicamata, my hst cmmunity, is a mining camp in the Atacama Desert. There is n disc, n shpping center, n museum r beach. Driveways must be watered daily t keep the dust dwn.
When I arrived here, I was scared. It was s different frm the urban middle-class America I was accustmed t. There were lst dgs n the streets, and a cnstant clud f brick-clred dust came frm the mine. There was n dwntwn, few smthly paved (用砖石铺的) streets, and little t d fr amusement. The peple wrked extremely hard. Rain was a rare phenmenn; earthquakes and windstrms were frequent.
I had studied Spanish fr tw and a half years and was always ne f the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was nly able t cmmunicate and needed ne persn t whm I culd explain my shck. I culdn't speak the thughts in my head—and there were s many.
Mst exchange students experience this like me. Culture shck presents itself in everything frm increased aggressin twards the peple t lack f appetite. I was required t vercme all difficulties. Being an exchange student is nt easy.
As time passed, everything changed. I began t frget wrds in English and t dream in Spanish and lve Chilean fd. I gt used t nt depending n expensive things fr fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with peple. And I tk math, physics, chemistry, bilgy, Spanish, art, and philsphy.
But the sacrifices were nthing cmpared t the gain. I learned hw t accept as well as t succeed in anther culture. I nw knw the wrld is my cmmunity and have a much deeper understanding f bth myself and thers.

When internatinal aid is given, steps must be taken t ensure that the aid reaches the peple fr whm it is intended. The way t achieve this may nt be simple. It is very difficult fr a natin t give help directly t peple in anther natin. The United Natins Organizatin (UNO)culd undertake t direct the distributin f aid. Here hwever rises the prblem f csts. Als tied with this is time. Perhaps the UNO culd set up a bdy f devted men and wmen in every cuntry wh can speedily distribute aid t victims f flds and earthquakes.
Mre than the help that ne natin can give t anther during a disaster, it wuld be mre effective t give ther frms f help during nrmal times. A cmmn prverb says,“Give me a fish and I eat fr a day, teach me t fish and I eat fr a lifetime.”If we fllw this wise saying, it wuld be right t teach peple frm less develped natins t take care f themselves. Fr example, a cuntry culd share its technlgy with anther. This culd be in simple areas like agriculture r in mre cmplex areas like medical and health care r even in building satellites. Even a small cuntry is able t help less develped natins. Smetime what is taken fr granted, like the setting up f a water purificatin plant r the administratin f a schl, culd be useful fr cuntries which are lking abut t slve cmmn prblems. It des nt cst much t share such simple things. Exchange students culd be attached fr a number f mnths r years and learn the required craft while n the site. They can then take their knwledge back t their hmelands and if necessary cme back frm time t time t clear dubts r t update themselves. Such aid will be truly helpful and there is n chance f it being temprary r f it falling int the wrng hands.
Many cuntries run extensive curses in all srts f skills. It will nt cst much t include deserving freigners in these curses. Besides giving effective help t the cuntries cncerned, there is als the build-up f friendships t cnsider. Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the shrt run and must cntinue t be given in the event f emergencies. Hwever, in the lng run what is really effective wuld be the sharing f knwledge.
46.Accrding t the authr, hw culd internatinal aid reach the victims in time?

49.Which aid is likely t fall int the wrng hands?

C. It shuld be given in the frm f materials.
D. It has gained supprt frm develped cuntries.
We like t think we can read peple like a bk, relying mstly n facial expressins that give away the emtins inside. But when it cmes t the strngest emtins, we read much less frm facial expressins than we think we d. In fact, even thugh we believe it’s the face that tells the stry, we’re typically reading smething very different: bdy language.
That’s the new finding frm a study published this week in the jurnal Science. “The striking finding was that ur participants had n clue if the mtin was psitive r negative, when they were judging faces nly,” says lead study authr Hillel Aviezer frm Hebrew University. “By cmparisn, when they were judging the bdy (with n face), r the bdy with the face, they easily tld psitive frm negative expressins.”
The findings are dubly surprising because the study participants themselves were cnvinced that they recgnized the emtins frm the faces, nt frm bdy language. “They even had their wn theries abut what part f the face was mst imprtant — but this was a false idea,” Aviezer says. He adds that we d, f curse, read a great deal f emtinal infrmatin frm faces but nly in certain situatins.
“I think the findings may have sme clinical applicatins,” he says. “Cnsider ppulatins such as individuals with autism (孤独症). We knw these peple ften have difficulties with recgnizing facial expressins,” he says. “Until nw we have been trying t help them by training them t better understand just the faces. But ur wrk suggests that perhaps we shuld teach them hw t recgnize emtins frm the full persn.”

A. mre imprtant fr shwing strng emtins
B. gd at expressing mre negative feelings
C. mre difficult t recgnize and understand
D. especially imprtant fr prfessinal tennis players
