As an rdinary man, I have a special habit t cnfess. Whenever I walk dwn the street, I ffer t pur a bttle f water frm the nearby river int the dirt f a street tree. It’s just my persnal habit, and I think it desn’t make a difference, but I’d like t d it. I mentin this in light f a campaign launched by the Arbricultural Assciatin t call n the public t water new street trees.
The UK gvernment has cmmitted t planting millins f trees t help meet climate targets and aims t increase tree cver frm 14.5% t 16.5% by 2050. Hwever, as Jhn Parker, chief executive f the Arbricultural Assciatin, says, “Planting a tree is just the start f the stry. The health and survival f new urban trees is threatened by increasingly dry weather. It is recmmended that the newly planted trees be given abut 50 litres f water per week fr the first three years.” While in rural settings, the newly planted trees and wds can take care f themselves and adapt, the challenging cnditins mean trees in the urban areas need a bit mre care.
Lng ag, I assumed that the gd f street trees was t sften the hard edges f urban envirnments. But, what an underestimatin f tree pwer that was! A study frm the University f Minnesta Twin Cities illustrates they can prvide inspiratin r a calming atmsphere in an therwise crwded city. Trees are respnsible fr easing urban heat island effects and air and pllutant filtratin. And I think they prvide the habitat fr wildlife, especially birds.
Trees can’t run away. Unfrtunately fr them and frtunately fr urban residents, city trees are stuck with us. If we want t cntinue enjying all the gd they d, we shuld try t understand their needs and d all that we can t supprt them. A bttle f water wn’t d much, but next time yu all tgether have a bucket f water t pur, yu knw what big effect will happen.
    24. What des the authr think f his persnal habit?
    A. It is f little effect.B. It is enfrced.
    C. It is f much significance.D. It is cmmn.

    C. They are threatened by the increasing fld.

In China, tea has becme an imprtant part f everyday life fr thusands f years. As the tea-prcessing methds and tea culture have evlved ver the years, tea sets have als changed t meet the practical and cultural needs.
During the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), tea leaves were traded acrss the cuntry and Asia. Fr the cnvenience f transprtatin and strage, tea leaves were pressed int bricks. T prepare tea, drinkers had t cut them int small pieces and bil them in heat-resistant teapts.

These teapts riginally came frm the Yi Xing regin f China and were sn cpied thrughut the wrld. Then Japanese teapt-makers mved the handle frm the side t the tp f the teapts.
Tea finally reached Eurpe in the 1600s, alng with the necessary tea sets made in Japan and China. As English teapt-makers began t adapt the tea sets t their cuntry men’s tastes, they eventually added a handle t the tea bwl because f the English habit f drinking ht black tea, which was cnsumed at higher temperatures. The size f teacups als grew t accmmdate milk and sugar in their tea.
By the early 1900s, innvatins in tea drinking became an American affair. The mst revlutinary ne was the tea bag, which was accidentally cmmercialized by Thmas Sullivan. He had been sending custmers tea wrapped in silk bags. Rather than take the leaves ut f the bags, as Sullivan intended, the custmers put the bags int their teapts instead. “Given that signs f Alzheimer’s disease (老年痴呆症) start t accumulate in the brain several decades befre the disease begins, understanding the cnnectin between sleep and cgnitin (认知) earlier in life is critical fr understanding the rle f sleep prblems as a risk factr fr the disease,” said study authr Yue Leng, PhD, f the University f Califrnia, San Francisc.
The study invlved 526 peple with an average age f 40. They were fllwed fr 11 year. Researchers lked at participants’ sleep duratin and quality. Participants als reprted bedtime and wake-up time in a sleep diary and cmpleted a sleep quality survey with scres ranging frm 0 t 21. A ttal f 239 peple reprted pr sleep with a scre greater than five.
Researchers als lked at sleep fragmentatin (碎片化), a measure f restlessness during the sleep perid expressed as a percentage. The higher the value, the mre sleep is interrupted. Participants were divided int three grups based n their sleep fragmentatin scre. Of the 175 peple with the mst interrupted sleep, 44 had pr cgnitive perfrmance 10 years later, cmpared t 10 f the 176 peple with the least interrupted sleep.
After adjusting fr age, sex, race, and educatin, peple wh had the mst interrupted sleep had mre than twice the pssibility f having pr cgnitive perfrmance when cmpared t thse with the least interrupted sleep. There was n difference in cgnitive perfrmance at midlife fr thse in the middle grup cmpared t the grup with the least interrupted sleep.
Hwever, due t the small sample size, the researchers were unable t fully investigate ptential race r sex differences. “Mre research is needed t assess the link between sleep disturbances and cgnitin at different life stages and t identify if critical life perids exist when sleep is mre strngly assciated with cgnitin,” Leng said.
