It all started in 1999 abut rganizing a delegatin frm the Wallnia regin t attend an internatinal agricultural exhibitin in China. He learned by chance that an internatinal cnference n plant prtectin wuld be held there a week earlier, s it seemed perfect fr him t attend the tw events, with airfare and htel rms bth cvered.
Serneels, then directr f a CARAH training farm, presented the technique f an early warning system t cntrl ptat late blight. He made sme China cntacts during his first trip and within a few mnths began receiving Chinese delegatins in Belgium. Several mnths later he returned t China n his secnd trip.
It was a trip t the remte cuntryside in Chngqing municipality in Suthwest China t help farmers grw ptates as their new crp, but ptat late blight that destrys the plant was a serius prblem. With a new Chinese friend, Che Xingbi, an agrnmist frm Chngqing, Serneels started t intrduce and set up an early warning system fr ptat late blight. It first started n a small scale in Wuxi, an underdevelped muntain cunty in Chngqing. Nw the early warning system cvers mre than 14 Chinese prvinces, aiming t help prevent late blight and increase yield.
He has made frequent trips t China ver the past 20 years. He has been busy training lcal Chinese technicians n the early warning system fr ptat late blight as well as n the latest techniques fr grwing ptates. “We are the sparks, and the engines are the Chinese agrnmists, he says f the wrk by Chinese technicians t ppularize the technique acrss China.
Because f his utstanding cntributin Serneels was awarded the Chngqing Friendship Award by the Chngqing municipal gvernment in 2015. He was named by the Chinese gvermment in 2018 as ne f the 40 Mst Influential Freign Experts During 40 Years f China's Refrm and Opening Up. The use f placebs(安慰剂) -treatments lacking active therapeutic elements -hlds a vital rle in medical research, especially in randmized cntrlled trials, where ne grup receives the actual treatment, and the ther is given a placeb. The blindness f the experimenters and participants regarding wh gets what ensures unbiased results. Hwever, if yu discvered yu were receiving a placeb in a clinical trial instead f a ptential treatment, hw wuld it make yu feel?
Surprisingly, research shws that placebs, even when penly acknwledged, can have psitive effects. A recent study published in Nature Scientific Reprts fund that nt nly can pen placebs ease physical pain but they can als reduce negative emtins like guilt.
Cnducted by Dilan Sezer, a dctral student in clinical psychlgy at the University f Basel, the study recruited 112 healthy university students between 18 and 40 years ld. Participants underwent an initial assessment f their general feelings f guilt using a questinnaire. They were then asked t write abut a past event that made them feel ashamed due t mistreating smene and the strength f their guilty feelings was assessed with a questinnaire. Then the participants were randmly assigned t ne f the three grups. The first was given a "deceptive" placeb: It cntained n medicinal ingredients, but participants were tld it cntained herbs and essential ils that had been shwn t reduce guilt feelings. The secnd grup was given an "pen" placeb and was tld that it "des nt cntain any medicinal ingredients. "The third was a cntrl grup that received n interventin at all.
Afterward, each participant was asked t fill ut the same questinnaire a secnd time. The findings were crystal clear: bth placeb grups shwed a significant drp in guilt cmpared t thse in the n-treatment cntrl grup. What's mre, the difference between placeb grups was statistically indistinguishable.
Ms. Sezer's study reinfrces the ntin that we aren't always cmpletely sensible abut what can help us. She ntes that her sample was small and included nly psychlgically healthy peple, but she hpes the findings will be investigated further. "We dn't knw yet if this will wrk in a clinical ppulatin, "she says, "but fr everyday guilt in yung peple, it wrks.

    29. In Sezer's study, why were the participants asked t recall a guilty experience at first?
    A. T measure participants' empathy.
    B. T btain a baseline f participants' guilt.
    C. T identify cmmn reasns fr participants' guilt.
    D. T assess participants' memry and recall abilities.

    A. T analyze the data mre efficiently.
    B. T ppularize the findings t mre peple.

Fr 75 years, astrnmers have been searching fr extraterrestrial(地球外的) intelligence, which invlves listening fr radi r ptical signals sent by intelligent civilizatins, but, s far, n artificial signals have been detected. Despite this, many scientists are cnfident that intelligent aliens d exist.
Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence( METI) has been less cmmn. It invlves talking rather than listening. Early attempts like the plaques n Pineer 10 and the glden recrd n Vyager 1 were symblic, shwcasing Earth's diversity. Bth spacecraft have since left the slar system. At their current speeds, it will be tens f thusands f years befre they reach anther star system. In the immensity f space, the chances that they will be fund are slim.
Nw, an internatinal team f astrnmers plans t use the wrld's largest radi telescpe, FAST, lcated in China, t beam a message twards millins f stars that are 10, 000 t 20, 000 light years away. NASA's signals t its remte spacecraft, meanwhile, culd have reached fur nearby stars. A reply frm aliens living in the vicinity culd reach us by 2029.
But perhaps we have already betrayed ur existence t aliens. Radi and televisin signals have been leaking int space fr nearly a century, in an expanding bubble f cmmunicatins that spans millins f stars.
When I did the maths, it turned ut the signal frm an early episde f Dctr Wh faded belw the hum f radiatin frm the big bang sn after it left the slar system.
The ethical questin raised by METI is: Shuld we be sending a message at all? Sme, like Stephen Hawking, warned against active bradcasts, citing ptential risks frm advanced and ptentially aggressive civilizatins. Others see n prblem, given that the signals take millennia t reach their destinatin. N internatinal rules gvern METI, s the experiments will cntinue.
Anther questin is: Wh speaks fr Earth? In the absence f an internatinal cnsultatin with the public, decisins abut what t send and where t send it are in the hands f a small grup f scientists. That is prbably unwise.
My wn take is that the risk is abstract when the message will take millennia t be received. We have mre prximate and existential threats than evil alien empires. My guess is that extraterrestrial intelligence and tech are s advanced that they are inscrutable. After all, we share 99 per cent f ur DNA with chimps and can't cmmunicate with them.
    31. The authr's attitude t the success f early attempts in METI is ____.
    A. negativeB. ptimisticC. defensiveD. psitive
    32. What can we learn frm this passage?
    A. Few scientists believe that intelligent aliens exist.
    B. Peple will ignre the immediate and practical threats.
    C. Radi and televisin signals have pssibly reached distant space.
    D. Sme scientists advcate METI because f the absence f internatinal rules.
    33. What des the wrd inscrutable underlined in the last paragraph mst prbably mean?
    A. activeB. bviusC. reasnableD. mysterius
    34. Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Sending Messages t Aliens r Nt
    B. Finding Internatinal Rules n METI
    C. The Existential Threat f Evil Alien Empires
    D. The Secret Betrayal f Earth's Existence t Aliens
