Shivani Bhalla feels a strng sense f duty twards wildlife, and she wants thers t feel it t.
Nw based in Samburu in nrthern Kenya, the cnservatinist has wrked fr ver 17 years with lins in the regin. As lin habitats have cntracted due t land-use change, cnflict between lins and humans has increased. The African lin, ne f the cntinent’s mst icnic species, is nw classified as vulnerable(脆弱的). Bhalla and her team aim t reduce these cnflicts and seek mutually beneficial slutins.
Bhalla has seen firsthand the challenges facing the lins. Kenya’s recent ecnmic grwth has als included agricultural and industrial expansin int lin territry. Habitat lss frm agricultural and industrial expansin has created tensin between lins and cmmunities. As lins struggle t find enugh f their natural prey(猎物), they target raised animals. Impacted cmmunities smetimes defend their herds and livelihds via killings f the lins.
Habitat changes have als changed the lins` scial structure. “In Samburu,” Bhalla says, “We dn’t have prides(狮群). We actually have lins that live alne r they live in small grups. Lins adapt t their envirnment and they learn hw t survive with what they have.”
Lins have als changed their behavir in an apparent attempt at self-preservatin. As sn as they leave prtected land and enter mre ppulated areas, they tend t becme ncturnal-active at night, and hiding in thick bush during the day.

On Nvember 8, an enrmus new airship called Pathfinder 1 made its first test flights in Califrnia. The huge airship was built by LTA Research, a cmpany that’s hping t make an ld methd f transprtatin new again.
The new airship is massive. At 121.9 meters lng, it’s far lnger than a ftball field. It’s the largest airship f its kind since the 1930s. But the Pathfinder 1 is built using a lt f new ideas and new materials.
Airships were especially ppular in the early 1900s. They were used fr transprtatin, fr spying, and were even used in war. Mst f that ended in 1937, after an airship called the Hindenburg caught fire and burned as it was landing. The Hindenburg tragedy scared peple away frm airships. Nw, a cmpany called LTA (Lighter than Air) Research is hping t change that.
LTA has been wrking n its airship, Pathfinder 1, fr abut 10 years. Frm the utside, Pathfinder 1 lks analgus t the airships f the 1930s. But Pathfinder 1 is cmpletely new. The airship’s utside skin is made frm anther tugh, light material. The ship gets its lift frm helium—a lighter-than-air gas that des nt burn.
The Pathfinder 1 has 12 electric mtrs, which can be pwered by either batteries r generatrs. The mtrs make it pssible fr the airship t take ff and land withut a runway. The Pathfinder I can fly at speeds f up t 75 mph (120 kph), but it will be flying lwer and much mre slwly during its early test flights.
