Scientists at Guangxi University in China nticed a great increase in the number f peple, phtgraphers particularly, visiting Nnggang Nature Reserve. “These phtgraphers were setting up their cameras clse t the bird nests,” researcher Xiacai Tan said. “This gave them the chance t take great, and even award-winning phts.” Hwever, researchers were wrried clseness t humans wuld make birds nervus and less likely t care fr their babies.
Tan and her team spent a year ding fieldwrk, checking 277 bird nests that included 42 kinds. They were studying the effect that phtgraphers had n birds’ habits, particularly hw ften parents fed their babies and the effect it had n predatrs (捕食者). Researchers fund the nests that were phtgraphed had a predatin rate f 13.3% while nests unphtgraphed had a much higher rate f 62.9%. “The presence f the phtgraphers increased the survival rate f the baby birds,” Tan explained. The presence f phtgraphers seemed t frighten the predatrs away. It’s great fun that their presence had little effect n the feeding rates in thse nests. Parents fed their babies the same whether they were phtgraphed.
